Some of you may recognize this video already, that is because it is a re-upload. It was brought to my attention, that I was causing some consumer confusion and so I have re-edited things to hopefully clear up any confusion. My apologies to you who have already seen it, I'm very proud of this piece and hope that you enjoy the video - maybe even enough to watch it again!

the reason it took longer to etch it the second time was because it was polished, when steel is polished its essentually REALLY flat and smooth, so it has a lot less pores in the metal, when it was ground with the angle grinder, between the grinding cuts were itty bitty mountains of metal, kinda like if you take your finger nail and slide it across it would make a louder sound because on a very small level theres some raised lines. when there are raised lines its means theres more surface area for the acid to etch, and if a lot of raised lines are shaped like this: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ which it is when grinding, the acidic base can kinda penetrate more. essentially its easier to break off a corner of a mountain than it is to penetrate a perfectly flat surface.

Hey Timothy. Pleasure watching you work. True inspiration. I have found that blacksmithing and knife making is the one thing that I can say with a clear contious that the end justifies the means. I always get excited when I have a problem or hit a barrier in my projects. Problem solving is a huge part of the appeal and satisfaction. Thanks for sharing.
    Stay sharp, forge on brother.

At 4:56 Yes. 1991. I used it for hunting and mining and fishing and a TON of freaking wild adventures in the wild no-road parts of Alaska. I had the head gasket replaced three times; the six cylinder engine really suffered in the early '90's. It is just sitting now, engine blown, waiting for a new home. And a new engine.

Just don't carry it in the same pocket with keys, a knife, change, or anything that's going to rub the surface over time any more quickly than the pocket cloth itself. Even the cloth of the pocket will eventually polish it again, but it would take decades.

Then if you want you can follow it up with a coffee etch later and from what ive seen it darkens the contrast a bit more. With ferric chloride i reckon you will get it done in 20 mins.

I bet if we found the scrapyard it ended up in that if we bring some new gas and oil it'd fire right up today. I also drove a 1998 Toyota Tacoma to 299,000mi. Sold it to a friend fir $1,000...hes still drivin it around WI. The Tacoma (and as Ive heard, 4Runner too) had some issues with weight and balance and traction but if you take care of them they will run forever.
