    Looks like the wire rope you started with is hoist wire rope which is typically performed so adding heat to it could be release that preform as you work it cause problems in it not wanting to weld. Just a idea I could be completely wrong.

    I cut my cable, then just mig the very ends.
    Throw the pieces in the forge to medium red untwist slightly & bang out all the rust/dirt. Flux, retwist if you can & throw back in the forge. Then just stick one end in the post vice & twist at welding heat.. couple times. Then forge weld into bars, stack, repeat until big enough.
    Normalize.. forge whatever piece I'm doing. Normalize again, ht, temper, grind.

    It's so nice to see somebody push through on a bad day. I was wondering if on cold days, if you preheat the face and dies? It just seems like you're shop is always a little cold, and I'm wondering if that might be hurting you.

    I'd recommend barricade from birchwood casey for the first oil after the etch. Some find good results from soaking in kerosene, but wd40 sucks

    Not a smith here, but I'd recommend hitting that cable harder to begin with, seal stuff up before oxides are able to form deep inside of those strands.

    I love watching your channel. My brother and I are talking about trying to find someone to learn the basics from and maybe setting up our own little setup. One thing I am constantly wondering is why yall leave borax in a box or spoon it over when it seems so much simpler to just put it in a shaker like in the pizza joints? That seems so much simpler to me.

      @@sadpanda9455 okay, I'm from Germany but here are some tips:
      - watch TH-cam videos about blacksmithing and maybe get some books too
      - indieknves (Instagram) has a world map with knifemakers, most of them can redirect you to a blacksmith or teach you the basics of blacksmithing (you want to start with that)
      - the king of random coal oven (the first one) costs about 20 bucks to make and lasts you a long time ... Mine has about 100 firings done with the original concrete casting
      - a lump of scrap steel is enough for a anvil, just go to the next machine shop and ask for a scrap piece

    I feel like the coal forge is only hotter because it has a blower in it. Couldn't Tim pull more heat from the gas forge by blowing oxygen into it?
