    It’s really interesting that Christy talked about the last shot being daring, because (fun fact) the way the house is framed in that shot with both floors exposed is exactly how the Broadway set was designed.
    And, the parallel with Mass is very interesting, since Reed Birney (from Mass) won a Tony award playing the part Richard Jenkins played in The Humans on Broadway.

      I really don’t understand her. She originally says that the initial visual style starts to wear thin and that the director should have gone in the direction of the last shot but that final visual moment is just simply an extension of several other moments throughout the film.

      @@SallyMankus130 Pretty sure she means that dollhouse view of both floors from the fourth wall view. It was a really neat perspective of the apartment we only got once at the very end.

    I saw this play a few years ago. (I think) it's a depiction of the sad decline of life in America for the average family. Like the old apartment in a not-so-nice part of town, the family creaks and groans its way through Thanksgiving dinner.

    I had the opposite reaction in that found the camera choices frustrating and off putting at first but as it went along I got more into it and found it pretty interesting. Thanks to it being on Showtime I've caught parts of it again and more I think about it the more I am liking it. Agree that Amy Schumer is very good with this kind of material and hope to see more from her.

    Was there anything to the mentioning and unusual intrigue into dreams throughout this movie? Everything became so tense when the Father brought up the faceless woman and he kept inspecting all the water damaged holes in the walls, partly because he's a concerned Dad. But when the coffee had a bubble/hole as he was telling more of the dream, Steven's character was convincing him to enter the hole next time.
    The way the final shot in the movie was framed made it look like a tunnel/hole that he was being lured into. It could also be that the woman he cheated on meant nothing to him and doesn't want to put a face to her in his dreams, but that she tempts him with that hole he doesn't want to address 🤷🏻
    But nobody on any review video is mentioning the dreams and how weirdly enthusiastic the family was to hear his, so now I'm just left here poorly guessing what was up with all that.

      When the dad kept looking at the ceiling from the table the stains from water damage looked like a woman with her breast showing.

    I loved this movie. The dialogue flows so well and the performances are great. One thing that stands out is the camera shots, I think that's some of the best stuff in the movie. There are no shot reverse shot or over the shoulder shots. He lets the scene play out with two characters in a shot. Loved it. It captures all sorts of anxieties from different generations and how it's a new time period in American culture.

    I really loved this, in a lot of ways I think this is a real estate horror movie about Midwesterners (small Towner's generally) being horrified by big city living conditions. All those shots of Richard Jenkins staring out the window just remind me of my Dad moving me into my Philly basement apartment

  • @dfa3366
    @dfa3366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think they live in a basement apartment with two levels. For NYC it looks quite large but dingy and dark looking and all the windows have metal bars. It makes it look like a prison. Maybe that’s a metaphor for life. Amy Schumer impressed me with her character. Playing a lesbian was is overcoming a breakup and heath issues.

    It's an awful film, beating Spencer as the most overrated film so far this year. I can't say how bad it gets from its midpoint onwards, because I'd given up on it by then. But what I saw was basically a bunch of uninteresting characters having uninteresting conversations, in a dark house, being morose and waffling. No plot. No dramatic energy. You could just go to your own family get together and it would be far more fun than this. The film reinforces that it's meant to be depressing through the lazy choice of destaturated colour grading. So it isn't good to look at either. Based on a play, apparently. Hard to believe the play was well received enough that it allowed its writer to screen-adapt his own work.
