no, no, world cup is the biggest football event in international football (i mean countries: brazil, argentina, germany, france, etc...) the champions league is the most important tournament in CLUB Football. For example, Lionel Messi played for Barcelona, which is a football club from Spain but he also play for his national team which is Argentina, and the same with every major name that you have watched, Ronaldinho also played for Barcelona and for his national team: Brazil and Cristiano Ronaldo played with the club Real Madrid and for his national team: Portugal.

So to give you an idea:- in England alone - not including Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland - there are about 5300 teams in the League system of which 68 are professional and there are also unaffiliated teams. If a lower league club can progress in the cup (in England it’s called the FA Cup and includes some Welsh teams) to play a big pro team, their share of the revenue from that one game can finance a club for years, wipe out debts, pay for new facilities etc.

In South America, it's the same as in Europe. Each country has its own leagues.
And the cup that brings together all the South American teams is called Libertadores da América

    Hi. Hope you read this...
You wondered how many teams there are. I live in Norway. I 2012, we had 900+ clubs, and 28,000 teams. England has 40,000+ clubs in 600+ leagues, with 800,000+ registered players. Germany has 31,000+ clubs. Argentina has 3,300+ clubs, and 331,000 registered players.
Each club can have everything from one to several teams. Men, women, age specific teams from 6,9,12, 16,19, 21, junior, A-Team( the real one), senior, old-boys/girls, reserve, company teams ( say a team from a local McDonalds against a team from a local PizzaHut, or Target or Boeing, or whatever). Each of these teams play in a league with similar teams from other clubs.
Countrywide leagues, countrywide cups, local leagues, local cups, cross countty leagues, cross country cups. Like Champions League in Europe.
Then we have nation leagues. North-America, South-America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania. Each have their own nations league. The best of these nations league play in the World Cup.
The nations league has the "best" ( in the coache's view) players from their country. Regardless of what country they play in. So a German playing in Premier League in England or Serie A in Italy, plays for the German national team.
And this happens in every football country every week from August through May.( some countries have season from Mars through November due to climate).
Audience is in the range from a few proud parents to 100,000+. Plus live broadcast on tv and Internet.

There is 211 soccer countries in the world.
Not only Europe but this video also follows Asia, Africa, South America. Just some North American and Oceanian countries dont have Relegation in their leagues.
There is uncountable number of soccer leagues and clubs in the world. And there is separate 6 Champion league for 6 continent.
A player can play for two team. One in for his national team other is a club. For example a player can play for USA and also for Los Angels Galaxy.
FIFA World cup is for National team. Otherhand there is a "Club world cup" where the best clubs across the world participates.

Soccer league club have an independent system. I mean today you and me can start a club with some of our friend and join the local official tournaments following rules it if we do well we will get promoted and promoted and maybe we might reach the top league in a country one day.
Thats why there is countless number of leagues and clubs. All the league follows a chain. The leagues are divided into tiers. Like 1st division, 2nd division etc.

The beauty of relegation and promotion is an amateur club starting in the lowest tiers of that country can rise to top tier . as its the survival of the fittest . The Text of queens We are the champion , no time for losers sums it up , and even Another one bites the dust . as its literaly a streetbrawl , with apex clubs that are top of the league year after year , the midtier reliables that dont win or rarely win the league and have been around for decades in that league and then the swing door teams and clubs that pormote relegate sevarl times over the past years .

It’s not just football … that’s the way basically every sports league is organized in Europe … the same goes for basketball and Hockey (with minor adjustments.
Yes, the FIFA World Cup is the Biggest tournament of them all … for national teams.
While the UEFA champions league is the most important tournament on the club level.
As I saw in the Noah lyles discussion, you Americans tend to put it all in one pot and not see the differences in the basic concept.

The whole point of football is that anyone can make it/win. I can find 14 guys now, and make a club to play for the 5th Serbian League.. There is no sponsor money there, and not alot of professional players, if any.. But at the end, the first placed goes on to higher league. But it gets much tougher and you actually start playing semi professional football players. Its exactly what Ryan Reynolds is doing in Wrexham. Now they are in a division which is funded by the country, now they are playing with the big boys.. Still far away from Premier league, but thats the whole point, hope and dreaming and passion.

It's kind of fun as somebody who once didn't follow football for about 15 years.
I looked again at say, the premier league(1st division in England) and I find all sorts of new teams and hear one of the teams that used to be in the premier league is now in league 1(3rd division, name is a left over from history)
Leicester arrived in the premier league in I think 2014, They won it in 2016, and this year they're again relegated to the second division.
And as others said, don't confuse clubs with national teams.
The world cup is for national teams. Belgium, the US, Brazil, France, etc.
Clubs are generally cities. Barcelona, Lyon, Manchester United, etc.
Clubs is where players generally play over 80% of their games. It's who they have a contract with, it's who pays them the big bucks and it's where the best football is played.
National teams have limited time to train together compared to clubs.
The qualifier "club" is always meant to indicate non-national teams. Like the "Fifa(organisers) club(not national teams) world cup"
You might also hear the phrase "X has scored Y goals for club and country." Again, indicating both goals for whatever club that pays him AND his national team.
