Stop that! There is no making sense and wanting Disney to do ANY work whatsoever to develop new characters to do proper service to your culture. There will be none of this doing anything to spotlight your culture in meaningful, original way. Now shush and allow Disney to just lazily race swap characters to properly disrespect and disregard you as an Indian with a deep, rich and incredibly historic culture.
I'm a white woman and I think this doesn't do your culture justice. I think instead of race swapping they should make MORE princesses like they have been so they can share the different parts of your culture.

I am Indian and Rapunzel was my favorite childhood Disney princess. It is so unnecessary to have a race swap and basically changing the true cultural background for a character. And a blonde hair is literally so significant. If they want diversity, then they should come up new original Disney princesses with diverse backgrounds.
Then don’t watch it. If the fact actress’ race being the same as yours bothers you so much, then don’t watch it.
Like if they wanna change the race just make a brand new princess instead of going through and changing everything

I think people forget why these Disney Princesses look the way that they do. They weren't just RANDOMLY chosen to have the color hair and skin... it's what, I guess, would be considered to be the norm for that area of the world.
I would NEVER have them change Jasmine or Pocohontas or ANY of the darker skinned characters with ANY that would be considered white. The characters were made a certain way for a reason, leave them the way they were meant to be!

It's more insulting that Disney is trying to be "inclusive" by changing original characters. Just create new characters that ARE inclusive, that would be much better.

That requires THINKING. The forever victims lack this process. It's much easier to complain, demand and force
Exactly like they did turning red right thats much better than making for example tiana played by a chinese women
Yeah like more of people like that new Wish movie!
Why not just make a new movie of a classical Indian fairytale?? That would be awesome, new, fresh, inclusive, and doesn't upset as many people.
Amen. No need to hijack preexisting stories to make them more "inclusive". It's not very original and it's just silly. I'm all for representation/inclusivity but there is nothing wrong with having some white princesses lol. And its not like there isn't already representation with stories like Mulan, Aladdin, and princess and the frog. Give us something new and interesting to watch and leave tangled alone because the animated version is flawless!
Exactly, Rapunzel is a German fairy tail, it makes sense that she's portrayed as a white woman. Instead of changing the already established races of existing characters for "woke points" Disney should make original stories for them. Tiana was such a huge thing for little black girls to see a princess that looked like them, Encanto did the same for Hispanic kids, they've done it before they can do it with an Indian Princess.
They have them over in India they change everything over there. You ever seen their caption amrica and spider man movies 😂😂😂
@@johnjames7289 what do you wanna say???

Looks like Disney haven’t learn their lessons from that black mermaid movie yet.
Rapunzel is called after a german plant. It is a german fairytale written down by the Brothers Grimm. The father in the original story stole the plant from a woman, that wanted the girl in return and therefore called her Rapunzel.
So, lettuce then lol
Actually its worth noting that the original Rapunzel was Persian…Rudabah in the Shahnameh. Not Indian but close.
The reason her hair was blonde is because her mom drank a magic flower tea which gave her healing power. Even her parents had dark hair, so the BLONDE hair is really important in a movie.
Fr
yep and in the end when her hair was cut and it turned brown that is literally how the end went in the movie..how are they gonna change that ?
the actress can wear a wig, or do you expec her to grow hair like rapenzul overnight?
As an Indian we would be the last race to be seen as blonde trust me
@@neroshome3520amd people can paint their face to play a black role...but u would scream racism😂.. Am I right?
As an Indian girl who grew up watching movies like tangled...this 'race swap' is unnecessary and unwanted. Make original characters of different ethnicities with different cultural backgrounds -THAT is true representation
Don't change the appearance of characters that people have watched and grown to love over so many years.
Thank you! You get it. As a kid, I loved the Asian martial arts movies. I would not have enjoyed them if they were full of White people like me. I also watched Utra Man, Godzilla and other Japanese shows like that, and not once did I give one thought to the fact that there were no White people in those shows. I actually enjoyed them as they were.
I supported the idea of our own New York City monster, Cloverfield, instead of appropriating Godzilla, which is Japanese Culture. I mean, maybe they could have given it a better name than Cloverfield, but the concept was great, and I hope they eventually do another one like it.
Instead of taking other people's culture and appropriating it, how about just creating your own and then we all have more to enjoy.
What's going on, however, is they are trying to destroy the notion of local cultures, and create one world wide culture that all looks the same. This is the vehicle to destroying the concept of nation states.
These race swaps are becoming insulting at this point. Non-white people get plenty of representation in movies and shows now, this is completely unnecessary.
I have been saying this over and over and over. Absolutely have representation for all races and ethnicities, just don’t take the classics away from those of us that grew up on them 🩵
Yessssss❤ they need to come out with new content instead of this rubbish
Totally agree! I love the idea of more representation! I totally support it! But please don't change a classic and beloved character just to make a story more diverse, make a new story that can truly and honorably show other cultures in an interesting way!💙

To bad the Brothers Grimm barrowed the story from Petrosinella by Giambattista Basile. Petrosinella which is a variation on parsley in Italian is the oldest written version of the fairy tale but is based on older oral traditions. As it's a fairy tale and not a real women who cares who plays Rapunzel and if we have to care do we get a German or Italian actress? Also, Ye Xian is the oldest written version of a fairy tale with a wicked step-mother, horrible step-sister and lost shoe that leads the king to find her, ie Cinderella so do we make Cinderella have to be played by a Chinese actress now, Zhou Lusi or Dilraba Dilmurat? See how silly worrying about who plays a fictional character.
As a 6' mutt with predominant Italian and Native features I delight to accept the role as Doc.
Ok just in general - Disney just needs to stop remaking the classic cartoons into live action. It's the same story and we LITERALLY seen them so this over and over again. They need to be creative and just create NEW stories and go bad to great storytelling. NOT remake the SAME stories. Even when change the character characteristics. - it's still the SAME STORY 😞

Disney doesnt have the balls to race swap anyone that isnt white. Imagine if they race swapped Tiana or Mulan

Then the movies wouldn't make sense, Tina is loosely based on a real person and her movie is based around the fact she's black.
@user-qf5nu7ex4n That's partly the point. We can see many German references in Rapunzel, so it would be weird to switch it
What’s crazy is (after a quick google search) that they’re saying Tiana is going to be played by a white woman. I’m not sure if I believe that, since Disney is so woke and stupid. But they could only be doing it to try to “prove” they’re not one sided/racist/woke. Which if true, will likely work. But for most of us, WE KNOW it’s just a ruse!
@@user-qf5nu7ex4nactually, no. tianas race has nothing to do with the actual story. it's revolves around her dream which is influenced by her culture. culture does not equal race. it does have some racial undertones, seeing as the timeline is set in the 20's in new orleans, but tiana being black is not necessary. am i saying tiana should be played by a white actress? not at all, because i understand how important the movie is to people of color, as she was the first african american princess disney released. but, her race is not important to the story.

Rapunzel is a European story, written by an Italian, then a version by French writer, then German, no Asians in sight!
Back in the day girls in Europe also had long hair. There are many Asian fairytales, why can't they write something new specifically for an Indian actress!!
They dont even need to write anything new since there’s Bollywood for that.

Back in highschool, a friend and I did a basic rewrite of an Indian Repunzel.
She had a similar beginning involving a magic sun flower, but this was a tree and the leaves were somehow weaved into a hijab.
We didn't want to "white wash" or take away from her potential culture so instead of her hair being magic the hijab was.
She could control it like how the trolls from the Trolls movie controlled their hair, so she could turn it into stairs, swing like Spider-Man and fight. Aside from that it could change color and pattern and couldn't rip or burn so it's the only one she wears.
We abandoned the story because we knew nothing of Indian culture outside of movies and didn't know how to move the plot past "she's a princess that fights".
I'm laughing now because we were so stressed about how no one would read our story if we just copied and pasted a poc as Repunzel without being original. Now I know we shouldn't have worried😂

I'm Chinese and polish. As a kid, my mom (who's Chinese) took me to see Mulan and I was beyond excited to see a Chinese cartoon! I'd be angry if they casted a white actress to play Mulan. Make more Disney princesses/prince of different cultures with their own story! They deserve their own story
I hear RuPaul will play Mulan in the live action.
EVERY culture/race has great stories to tell. Rapunzel is a German story about a German girl. It was written in the 1600's.
I would also be annoyed if they stupidly changed the race of the character of Mulan to be anything other than Chinese. Or if Roots was redone with a white cast... It's just stupid.
I am pretty sure they already made a live action mulan like around 4 years ago + - ago I think
Disney better not change my girl. Tangled was and is one of my favorite Disney movies. Personally just dye Mandy Moore’s hair blonde and we’re good 😂😂
My Guess Is That They'll Make Her Wear A Wig

Rapunzel is different from all other characters played by actresses thru blind casting as they used to call it. Here's why: Rapunzel's blonde hair is strongly highlighted as part of her image --
Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair,
So that I may walk,
The golden stair.
Keep Rapunzel as is, and write a new story about a different girl with long hair.
I think we should stop changing characters races and just make a new movie with the character of that race. We will eventually have like 10 versions of the exact same movie with one of each race. It's not that serious lol
Disney be like: No we don't want to spend money to actually represent different cultures and make new movies for people! Just spray-paint the old ones, that'll do!
as a mixed girl with dark curls down to my waist, im ready to be elsa
Mhmmm, they need to make the eyes blue though. Can you imagine?? 😂
@@CookiePhantasmagorical 😭
I’m sure they will find a “reason” why it makes sense
It's a German fairy tale that originated in France and Italy. It has history, let's not change it. Make your own story and have whatever characters you want.
If Indian culture is so similar to the Rapunzel story, just make an original Indian story with the same vibe as Rapunzel
i agree with every statement made in this vein. the culture for all those races have AMAZING fantastical cultural tales/mythos stories that they can 100% use and rewrite.
I think its already one. like its an Russia snow white story.
In the live action remake of Aladdin, Agrabah is a deliberate mishmash of different styles that weren't blended together. The walls that surround the city look sculpted like Adobe or mudbrick. The striped archways look like a famous mosque in Spain. Agrabah is supposed to be a port with the sand dunes going up to the ocean, which only happens in Namibia. The filmmakers made Jasmine dress like an Indian bride. There doesn't seem to be a consistent style of dress in the kingdom as a whole. The palace was inspired by a Burmese monastery but with byzantine details added. Yeah, so the new Rapunzel is also going to be a mess designed to look like nowhere in particular. Yay diversity!
Only if it has a Bollywood dance scene in it
Yessss. I would actually watch that
As an Indian woman, I think Rapanzul should be not played by an Indian women. Give me an original Indian princess... 😮 Let Rapunzel be Rapunzel.
Right like I would love to see some new Indian or black Disney princesses but for the already existing ones they should just keep to the original design
We are in desperate need of an original indian princess or indian love story.
I dont care what it is. But dont make it rapinzel
if they ever do make a live action indian princess story then avantika would literally be the perfect fit, sis is stunning
@@LolamyIk I’m not Indian but I’m Sri Lankan, but I still wouldn’t want a Sri Lankan or Indian playing rapanzel like she’s known for being german
They cast a white Jasmine for Aladdin a couple years ago. Where was this same energy🤷🏾♂️
I’d love to see Florence Pugh as rapunzel! She looks so gorgeous and natural with both long blonde and short brown hair and her acting range is phenomenal.
Well... Rapunzel is a story that existed in many regions throughout history. Petrosinella (Neapolitan one), Persinette (English), and of course the first, original German Rapunzel. Rapunzel (In different names and somewhat different interpretations) existed in oral stories of different countries: almost all European regions, countries of North and South America, and even in Russia. The premise itself - “the damsel in the tower is in trouble” and “the girl has become retribution for the actions of her parent” - are so common that it is useless to determine origins.
YET. Disney's Rapunzel has a specific plot that deviates so far from the original Grimm story that her original writer fathers would not have recognised her. And she is a blond, green-eyed girl, Because this is how it was written by DISNEY COMPANY THEMSELVES.
If Disney wants an Indian Rapunzel, there's nothing stopping them from writing an Indian Rapunzel. In a different setting, with a different plot. Perhaps they could bring in more cultural aspects. Focus not on the action and love line, but on something else. Perhaps they could find a source in Indian culture and tell a story that's closer to Indian folklore. And it would be much more interesting than watching the same story, but told twice.
But why, when you can simply repaint everyone’s favorite heroine and say “That’s how it was."
I am most offended by the fact that Disney can't pump out any new or original content. Just another love action remake of a princess movie that is already well loved. I'm over it...
Yeah. Isnt there an indian princess tale that can be told? I mean moulin rouge did it and that wasnt even the point of the movie lol
@@MrEvldreamr Exactly, either make a great copy cat live action, or tell another story. There's so many opportunities
To be fair this was a FAN cast.
I am genuinely curious, how much of Disneys iconic work is actually original content, isn’t it all copied from somewhere/based on someone else’s work, usually where copyright laws are no longer a concern.
The problem isn't that they're POC, it's that they do not represent the original character! Rapunzel has long golden hair, that's her thing!
hair dye exists!
@@Peachetteshowtime and donyou think they're gonna dye her hair? no. I honestly don't care if theyre POC, it's finally nice to have some representation instead of some white girls, but they're casting a brown girlie with her natural brown hair, not golden hair. Same thing with snow white. Her name is snow white because her skin is as white as the snow? It wouldn't make sense to cast someone whos not light. There's many other latinas who have light skin. That's the discussion. Not that they're POC.
I don’t see why the hair color matters so much, the length is WAY more important. I mean Rapunzel in tangled is a natural brunette. It’s literally only blonde because of the yellow flower and it goes back to brown after.
@@annataymond9529 that's the point? it glows? the hair color DOES matter
@@mangostarz yeah, but they could have it only be the color while it’s glowing, and it wouldn’t change the story really
You would think Disney would learn. I understand they will now have cartoon-like dwarfs in a Snow White that comes out next year (after the uproar of only having 1 dwarf) but Snow White is still not going to be played by a woman that has skin that is “White as snow” like the 1937 cartoon movie).
I have noticed some of my kids ( I am a teacher) were upset when they saw Ariel is black in the movie. They said they wanted to see someone who looks almost like Ariel😅
If Disney were meant for children, perhaps listen to their wish? As for Rapunzel , if they want, they could make a new movie about an Indian princess.
Why are we race swapping *everything* about Disney movies now? Ariel, Snow White and the seven dwarfs, now Tiana actually *IS* gonna be white!! Like, all of the princesses were made to look like that for a *reason*
TIANA AND SNOW WHITE?!?!?

Where are you getting Tiana's going to be white?-
I think it's a bit odd considering that Rapunzel's hair color being golden is extremely significant to the story. She gets her powers from a golden flower that was grown by a drop of golden sunlight, that's why her hair is blonde and glows bright yellow. The symbol of a yellow sun and yellow lights are present all throughout the story because of her hair. Blonde hair is not a natural trait of Indian people, I guess they could edit the actress's hair to be gold but I feel like that could look strange...
And in the movie( I dont remember the story, haven't read it in awhile) when her hair gets cut it turns brown. What colour would it turn now, ginger?
Also we're not upset that we don't see ourselves in Disney, it's the white "woke" people who are upset on our behalf. And what do they do about it?? They gave us some hand me downs!!!!!
For example imagine asking your family for a new jersey and they "gift" you your older sibling's torn jersey without telling him, with your name spray painted on it.
(That torn jersey holds a lot of sentimental value for your sibling and for you it's just scraps given to you thus ruining the day for both of you.)
well i mean the blonde wasnt natural on the original repunzal, she had brown hair n then got the flower stuff happen
The real question is are they also going to chsnge the dance scen into an indian bollywood dance.

Ariel is a mermaid with no societal significance, but it's like casting merada from Brave as an Indian. She's Scottish and the cultural context is important, just like how Rapunzel is relevant to Germans.

People need to realize Disney took most of their classic stories from GERMAN writers. They didn't even originate the stories, they just gave them happy endings. The Brothers Grimm were German writers that represented the Germans they were writing for.
Rapunzel's original story takes place in Germany in the past, according to Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The story has origins in France and Italy, but the Brothers Grimm made the story popular. The Brothers Grimm were German folklorists who spent time collecting folklore stories through interviewing friends and family.

@@shivamsud Jasmine is an Arabic name, it doesn't don't matter how "popular" it is in India. In the original story the sultan's name is "Qamar Al-Din", an Arabic name as well. Jasmine sister's name actually changes depending on the version of the story and in most stories Jasmine doesn't even have a sister or a pet tiger. Yes our culture is represented poorly in the film but guss what Jasmine is a middle eastern princess regardless of anything.
See what I can’t get past is how they’re gonna do her hair. Like, HOW, the animated film was so technically advanced they had to create a new software to animate her hair. I just can’t fathom how they’re gonna do rapunzel’s hair in a live action, casting aside
as a short white female, i will accept my role as Aladdin
I love Avantika and she would absolutely embody the role of a Disney Princess, but I would rather they make a new Princess movie with her as the main character and maybe bring some culture into it than changing the original:)
Exactly!
That won't happen for quite some time. This has happened since well movies first became a thing. The studios sees what sells and makes it with minor changes until they get a bunch that just doesn't..... It is why there were so many westerns made back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back.... Then they disappeared except for the occasional remake of an old IP that has a built in fan base. Think about how many "Asteroid movies" there were or how many "terrorists took over the white house" ones. If something gets a little rise from the audience then capitalism pushes them to milk it until it is dried into nothing. Or sometimes longer where they can eat a loss intentionally as a tax write off. It is just pointless to get even half as upset as people seem to over different ethnicities of characters that are totally made up....
