      @@darylwirth9423 Hard to say, nothing's been proven yet. That said it does seem very likley a lot of shady construction projects were given Mikes "Seal of approval". Most the problem houses I've seen mentioned he had nothing to do with beyond just accepting some endorsement deal for shady places.
      That said my biggest complain to the "Mike is a Saint" idea people love to push is he never names the bad contractors, inspectors etc on his show. He just lets them get away with their behavior because he fears legal actions for slander too much. His advice is also pretty bad on how to avoid it.
      Mike tends to tell people to get inspectors, but if they do a bad job it's just a "shrug" and let it be sort of thing. He tells people to not accept the lowest bidder, but also has episodes were people over paid and got the most expensive possible and still got screwed over. Basically this entire show is semi pointless in terms of actually avoiding getting screwed over by bad contractors, Home Inspectors, etc.

  • @JustaGuy_Gaming
    @JustaGuy_Gaming 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    I will say the same thing I feel on nearly every episode. Laws need to change, and it's not just in Canada either. If the contractor is slighted they can put a lien on your house and force money out of you. If the contractor does a poor job, runs off with the money or any number of issues the home owner seemingly has no recourse. All they have to do is change their company name, declare bankruptcy etc and they get off scott free. The Police and/or Government do nothing to help the home owner get justice.
    But if the contractor feels underpaid they can instantly get a lien on your home with zero proof. A lien you have to fight to get removed.

    Dude! Ceiling drywall is 5/8" The stuff for the walls is 1/2".
    I bought a manufactured home (read trailer park unit). It has an addition built onto one side that was not originally a heated space. One of the previous owners made that into a heated space with a gas garage heater. No vapour barrier. No space between the insulation and the roof sheeting. No roof vents. We heard dripping when it was cold outside. We assumed the roof was leaking. Inspection showed no issues with the steel roofing
    I got fed up and punched a hole through the ceiling to see what was going on. What I found was condensation dripping off the underside of the steel rofing. The OSB they had used for sheeting had disintegrated and the rafters were rotted.
    This is why a roof MUST be ventilated.
    We had to demolish the entire roof and start over with new rafters. The rafters are notched to allow air flow. The soffits are vented and there are three vents on the roof. The insulation has a 2" space above it. There is vapour barrier tuck taped to the vapour barrier in the walls. Now there are no moisture issues and the room is a whole lot warmer.
    Next step is to replace the original roof on the main part of the house.

  • @hotpuppy1
    @hotpuppy1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I question the window installation under the stucco. How do you know if it was flashed correctly without ripping off the stucco? By the looks of the rest of the addition, I will guess that the windows were NOT done correctly either.

    When bad contractors and inspectors defraud customers there should be only one punishment. Once convicted of the expansion in the fraud laws. A prison sentence of one year for every $5000 of contract cost. The State can also use that workforce to make every defrauded home right and build and maintain low income housing as part of their prison sentence. Which would go toward paying the cost of their incarceration.The fly by night contractors will all but disappear. With licensing requirements will go a long way to address the public safety and trust issues that this has caused.

    Mike, I wish you were in the U.S.. I need help. I bought a house 2 years ago. I'm a first time homeowner at 54 years of age. I bought without conditions like an inspection. Previous owners only took cash offers not through a bank. I didn't know any better. Now I'm having issues. Yard is flooded, septic tank is too small and storm water fills it up causing sewage to sweep out. While yard smells like septic. No insulation in walls or attic. Very narrow crawl space so I or contractors can't get in. Floor joists gave away in bedroom causing dresser to tip over. No joist hangers and rusty nails. Electric plugs have no ground. Just 2 prongs. Holes in Soffit where birds and cats get in. The toilet is sinking from the soft floors. Sill plates and studs in the garage are rotting from all the flooding in the yard. Insulation in the garage has asbestos. The ceiling in the garage is sagging in the middle. Paint on the outside of the house is just primer. Windows are not insulated. Front door seals leak air. No HVAC system. Just ventless propane heaters on the wall. I have a lot more going on with the house. It's gonna cost me thousands of dollars I didn't count on when buying the house. I need help and don't know who to turn to. I bought a lemon house because it was what I could afford. Nice neighborhood and I love my back yard when it's not flooded. There is not enough legal protection for the homeowners. The bad contractors has legal protection and can lien your house to force you to pay for his crap that isn't safe or done. They get their money and don't have to complete or fix their shoddy work.
    Fraud is way too prevalent nowadays. You must visually see past projects that the contractor has done. If the current homeowner doesn't want people in their home have them take photos and provide a testimonial documenting all aspects the contractor worked on. You must see business licenses. You must verify those licenses. You must verify that they are insured. You must have construction permits. You must take possession of those permits for your records and make photocopies to post for anyone to see but keep the originals so they don't vanish if they are fake. These fraudulent practices include false documentation.

      No need for the licensing in many (most?) states. You can pull the permits for your own residence and do the work yourself in Michigan, for example. I've been burned by shoddy contractor work too many times. It will always be done correctly the first time if I do it. I'm slower than the pros (not.counting rework), though. Easier, and a whole lot cheaper to just do most of it myself, unless it requires specialized equipment that's outside of my price range.

      Not really... the Ontario was situation was by assiciation/promotion of house where the actual builder did not do the work correctly or by the approved plans. Holmes was affiliated and he actually promoted the deal but did not build or inspect the houses in question.
      It is now subjudicae, and he the company cannot comment.

    I don’t understand how that much of moisture can accumulate. This has nothing to do with the vapour barrier or insulation. Why isn’t there any moisture in the crawl space? Even with vapour barrier on the wrong side.

    • @Faruk651
      @Faruk651 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As i watched more into the episode i see that there is no ventilation in the attic, no intake no exhaust. That explains the moisture in the ceiling but how does the walls get wet. They must have dumped so much heat into that room without any air return.

      @sottx8268 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a good question. It's not gonna be 100% air tight, but very little escapes through those holes. It is still sealed at all the seams and ends with sealant and/or tape. The aim is to prevent humidity in the inside air from condensing in the cold insulation, not to prevent drafts.

    I'm a DIY in fulltime RV living also in extreme weather conditions. I once asked for a bit of advice from someone with previous experience in construction. I immediately backed away from the friend's advice and I was quite adamant at avoiding the expertise of any "Housie idiot!" My RV projects are not Tiny Homes either. In other words it has to lightweight, not only energy efficient but also maintain safety in a traffic collision. I was once told by "the friend" to tear it down to the frame and have it newly built in a weekend as if I had that kind of experience. Instead, I was able to piece together all the rot damage without compromising the outer shell. You can keep your housie problems! I won't have any part of it! I'm strictly automotive and I've been doing this for nearly 20 years! I have zeroed my living expenses meaning that I have not even used gas or propane for heating! I don't rely on a big block engine to run the alternator for my power! I'm truly off the grid. This means zero emissions too! I did take out the flush toilet and black water tank so no stinky sewage leaking and no sewage dumping! I DIY'd my own knockoff version of a waterless composting toilet combined with the use of the wood stove as a sewage waste incinerator! I ration my water use lower than emergency disaster water rationing! The rest of our society is completely wasteful and polluting. plus all you homeowners or tenants have to put up with the rising costs of living year after year! Grid tying to utilities is a money conning scam. Look at your monthly bills and prove me wrong! In any conversation I have with friends or random strangers, they say they are impressed or they like the way I live. But when I belittle the "Housie dumb dumb way of living paycheck to paycheck in a climbing debt load" oh man they hate it!! You're welcome haha!!

      Can't believe he's become like one of them. Worse, he put out a public comment saying the homeowners didn't buy the Holmes inspection package and thus it's their problem. Despite him advertising the homes as being Holmes approved. Further, if I understood the reports correctly, he didn't just fund some of those companies, but one of his own companies sold at least one of the defective homes directly. He can't claim he didn't know or wasn't around. Mike was actively involved. Don't understand why he won't fix it. Is he out of money or just that greedy.

    The irony is that it seems Mike Holmes turned into another runaway contractor. According to CBC, he provided financial backing and legitimacy to "Holmes Approved Homes" (his endorsement in their marketing) built and sold by Third Line Homes in Meaford (TerraceWood subdivision, ~2015). Many of the homes have been condemned because of shoddy construction. Other families are dealing with very expensive repairs. The builder went bankrupt. What good is "Holmes Approved" when Mike won't answer their letters or calls, and his organization says it's not their problem?

It's entertainment after all, Mike is the good guy and the previous contractor is the bad guy; always.

If Mike Holmes doesn't help those homeowners, he'll be forever remembered as a grifter and scammer. Surely, some who know or interact with him have pointed this out.
