I am an aging hippy who (1) was at Woodstock in 1969, (2) saw Janis there but not Pig (I was asleep), but (3) saw the Dead in January 1970 at the Fillmore East, with Pigpen only 10 feet away. I have never seen anyone who was cooler than Pigpen; he was 100 percent feeling. And he and Janis were the greatest performers out of SF because they let the music fill every cell of their body. Turn on Your Lovelight and Let it Shine!
I’m an aging hippie as well. Saw the Grateful Dead in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1970. A great concert that opened with NRPS, followed by Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Grateful Dead closed the show. Best part was an incredibly small audience, which meant we sat on the floor directly in front of the stage. There was probably less than a thousand people in attendance.
I saw the Dead at Philmore East too, possibly in 1970, and Pigpen was only a couple of meters away. A bunch of us were outside the side door and Pigpen wanted to let us in to sit up on the stage, but Security wouldn't allow it. We had tickets for the next night, though.
Stumbled upon this post..Today is the 44th Anniversary of Janis' untimely passing. Play Janis today. She loved Pigpen. They are together in Rock n Roll Heaven.
In this Grateful Dead song with Janis Joplin; LOVELIGHT in 1969, I noticed that Janis starts singing at 4:20 minutes on this audio, hummm interesting? I LOVE that The Grateful Dead specialized in longer songs than other bands, like as in the ART of Love Making, THESE MUSICIANS didn't scrimp with their LOVE of MUSIC! ! !
I was at the Fillmore West in SF and saw Janis and Ron sing Lovelight together. I was walking toward the snack bar to get a coke when I was swept backwards by a wave of moving bodies toward the front of the stage. I finally got my bearings and lo and behold!!! There was Pig and Janis hugging and dry humping while they busted out a very fine version of Lovelight. It was truly MAGIC!!! Peace, Luv & Harmony, BluzCatKeef Guitar Slinger and R&B Singer -\w/~=^~_•^= DAMN’D CrAzY ASS BluZCaTZ BaND =^~_•^=~\w/- MeowrrRRRRRoCK’n’FuCKiN’RoLL!!! ♫♪♫♪♫•*¨*•-w~^♥-♥^~w-•*¨*•♪♫♫♪♫
My goodness. Two of the greatest rock blues vocalists on the same stage. Never knew this existed. Amazing. Wonderful. Never to be repeated again. What a jewel.
I was repeated! Woodstock was in in August of 1969. PigPen and Janis sang "Lovelight" on July 16, 1970 at the Euphoria Ballroom in San Rafael (Marin County, near SF). The recording is on TH-cam and it is even more exciting than this one! th-cam.com/video/RmPkgSIkUeM/w-d-xo.html
And Pigpen of the Grateful Dead died in March of '73. They were all age 27 when they died, part of the tragic "27 Club" of performers who died at that age.
someone who was at this show, told me Janis comes out from behind the drums, the crowd goes nuts ! she is wearing pink top (no bra) and sweating profusly 2 min into her set ! she was soooo animated the dead almost fadded into the background
YES THEY DID !!!!!!!! have you listend to the 1970 version ? it is just as goood !! the KING AND QUEEN OF THE BLUES !.. and they both preferd alcohol over LSD, and was drinking buddies :)
wow. hard yet easy to imagine the magic that would have been Janis in a full set with the boys. Sub Janis for Janis lite (Donna Jean). Sad Donna Jean gets bashed all too much but she tried and the boys thought she was worthy of being on the bus.
It coulda happened but Janis had such stage presence and charisma she really out performs everyone in the vocal department here. It woulda been Janis & The Dead
Not sure why this says Album Woodstock, but if they don't know, it would be nicer to pst nothing than profligate the BS that flows around this sad lady. this show is June 7th, 1969 show, Joplin appeared at the end of the Grateful Dead's set at Fillmore West. Pretty sure Woodstock was August, right?
we haven't yet released this song - it may be on a new DVD / VOD edition of the film that will be coming out at some point in the next 12 months. The version we have doesn't have Janis singing on it.
Well, I am in the minority here and I get what people like about this, but I find it went on too long and was kind of self-indulgent. If I was there in person, I would have gotten bored after about 8 or 9 minutes. Maybe you just had to be there. And, I saw Janis live three times before 1969 ( and was wowed by her) and Pigpen once in 1967.
Janis and Pigpen are the perfect duo.
The two great blues vocalists of the late 1960s, riffing off pure feeling. Mutual feeling. This recording is one of a kind,
There's another recording from 1970 where Janis comes out swinging from the start.

I was there at Woodstock and I remember some of it.

Janis and Pig, that's peanut butter and jam level right there.
They were almost definitely fucking lol
Wouldn’t trade my midnight Dead shows at Fillmore East for anything.
Thank You Wolfgang !
A great star graced this world in '45 - rock in peace Pig Pen, dancin with Pearl out there, somewhere... far out! TURN IT ON!
Amazing!!!! They had so much chemistry, almost one in the same.
There’s so many gems out there like this that haven’t been released. Duane Allman on guitar with them is another favorite of mine
WOW! 20 minutes Long and you can't let go. Love it!

Jimi & Janis died in 70, Morrison died in 71. They all died within 10 months of each other.
And Pigpen of the Grateful Dead died in March of '73. They were all age 27 when they died, part of the tragic "27 Club" of performers who died at that age.
the 1970 version with Janis is SMOKIN !!
this isn't from Festival Express.
I produced the film and have the masters from that tour, which I've just listened to - it's a different performance.
willemmaxted I would love to hear that jam that was playing when bob weir said they definitely took off that night

ETERNALLY !!!!
It can be good for you.
One person is different than another. This world is so weird now I doubt I need a ticket to re- experience simulation.
