VW Engine Stand - How to Lift and Mount (Air-cooled Porsche, too!)

  • So what is the best way to lift a VW Engine into a VW Engine stand?
    There are four ways demonstrated here. But you definitely want to have your VW engine yoke mounted to the VW Engine first, then lift the VW Engine in one of the methods posted here, then push the VW Engine yoke into the VW Engine stand.
    The same rules apply for air-cooled Porsche Engine stand.
    If you know any other way to mount your Volkswagen Engine stand, please share it in the comments below!

    I reference this video twice now. Once to lift my first engine and I use method four which it works great. But of course I put the yoke on the wrong side the second time and lifted up. So, why does that matter what side? First time was with a different engine that I dismantle so it was easy to remove but this engine I'm not going to dismantle. So now I need to lower it to move the yoke to the driver side which i've not done before. I guess its the same process except scarier because I'm lowering it and don't want to drop it. Thank you Sir for all your videos and sharing your knowledge.

    All the methods you demonstrated are very good and I've used them all. In the day I used to have cars with I6 engines and if you're familiar with Detroit I6s you well know that powerlifters could use them for training they were so heavy. I came up with an idea that still works. Making a simple frame with a double U similar to motorcycle swingarm jacks or F1 pit lifting jacks I fabricobbled a swinging frame with seatbelt slings on either side for the job. One can utilize the engine mounts or, in this case, the cylinder pots to lift the entire long block. I later installed a ratchet from a boat winch to make it more usable. It has four wheels and the center of gravity will always balance as it swings. It resembles a U shaped auto rotisserie with hinged pivots. It uses the principle of a camshaft to multiply the torque and center everything while the wheels shift the center of gravity, stabilizing itself constantly while rotating itself. A boat lift is also another way of picturing it. Thank you and good luck!

    • @DuckmanCycles
      @DuckmanCycles  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats a lot more cylinders and a lot more weight for sure! I have an AMC 304 over here (from a Jeep) if that thing fell off the stand it'd be a disaster! I need to get that out of the garage! Want a rebuilt Jeep engine? 😀😂😀😂😀

    Another way when alone - mount the bench mount yoke part on your bench securely and make sure your bench has at least a 2x4 directly under the yoke location (in case your bench is not strong). Then,if you have either an open garage ceiling or a way to mount a large enough hook to one of the ceiling support wood members in line, slightly ahead with where the yoke is. Hang the main hook of a come-a-long (or whatever you call them) on the ceiling hook. Place the engine, with ropes attached, under the extended come-a-long. Put the hook on the rope center and jack the engine, with main yoke secured to the engine, up to the bench mount. I've done my rebuilds this way from tear down to first start this way with no trouble. Roll around stand is preferred, but you do what you gatta do sometimes.

      The mounts that usually come with these engine stands tend to put too much stress on the VW case in the wrong places. I've seen people use them and be fine, but I've also seen people use them and crack the case. I recommend the correct mount always!

      Funny how people think lifting heavy things is bad for your back.... Its only bad if you can't keep the spine strait, which is a matter of core strength.
      A healthy man under 50 should be able to lift a light engine like this no problem, otherwise its time to hit the gym before the inevitable decline of the mussel mass from 50 -> death.

      At the end of the video I have it lifted over my head! LoL! I'm 40 and my back is VERY strong... for now anyway lol. I bought an engine from an old man a couple years ago wrapped it in a rug and carried it from his backyard out to my car. I paused for a moment to catch my breath and he decided he was going to help and grabbed the TOP of the engine pulling it away from me and damn near rolled it out of my arms. I had to RUN to my trailer the last 20 feet to stop from dropping it to pull it from his grip! Damn idiot he was... and he was barefoot, too! Not a good idea when lifting engines!

      The nut I used is the same nut that you would normally use on the bottom bolts. The top bolt that I used is shorter than the normal top bolt in that location... less turns makes it easier to install and remove, but there was no reason why you couldn't use the long bolt that is normally in that location. I hope that helps :-)

    I've seen this other method that I am on the process of reproducing for myself. If you have the front pulley attached. A small chain with 2 hooks and a cooling belt. Loop the belt on the underside of pulley and the 2 hooks on the bolt holes at the top of the block. Rig it to length so the chain and belt can be lifted with an engine hoist. It is brilliant as it is so quick and easy to attach and undo. When I finish it, I will post a picture.

    how you do it would depend a lot on what you have available. I have seen guys with lifts raise the car as high as a wheeled tool box, let the lift down until it touches, then pull the last couple of bolts. They raise the rest of the car up, then wheel the engine out. Another method I've seen with various engines is a simple chain hoist, but you have to have one in the right spot to do the lifting as required. Then there are some guys that will use a handy fork lift as the hoist, but that is risky, especially when the fork lift is moved around the shop to do other things. This method was used, the engine was all but done, then some idiot backs the forklift into it knocking it down, off the stand and breaking a ton of things. Not good for the engine, the builder, or the idiot that lost his job that day and got billed for the parts for the next rebuild. This is also why it's better to work alone in your own shop than in a large shop with lots of other people around.

      @@scottstetsonmusic Good, go to another video... you probably could have done that faster than the time it took for you to leave this stupid remark!

      Despite all the waste of time in the video with stupid silly shit…. I’m glad I stuck with the video. That last example of putting the engine and the stand by laying the stand on the side and leveraging it up. That was pretty rad! Love it
