I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that fake bullet thing was added to the dub, US Manga went kind of crazy with this film if I remember correctly and commissioned some additional footage, Releasing a special edition DVD with digitally altered scenes as well, Adding digital zooms and such to specific scenes, so I’m not sure if that’s present in the original, I could be wrong, but as far as I know that’s a dub side change
I think you're actually right about that. The English folks at Central park media apparently loved the movie. I'm. Pretty sure they paid for the majority of the death force sequel as well. So I wouldn't be shocked at all that the Directors cut was all over the places because of that.
7:25 Nice callback to a classic training film that's eerily close to a Monty Python sketch. "One group of men very silly, all bunch up together behind the hill, maybe they get lonesome." BOOM!
I've always liked the quirkiness of this anime. It's not one of my favorites, and I don't even know if I'd call it a _good_ anime... but I enjoy it. Definitely one of those titles that I chuckle at lovingly at the mention of its name. I always mentally put this one, Genocyber, and The Guyver all together. I think because I would see them in the Anime section at Blockbuster, and would always notice the "Adults Only" sticker, which only served piqued my in them as a young kid.
The anime section at the local video store was always a fun adventure when I was a kid. They had anime and plague dogs mixed together. I had the pleasure of watching MD on the ifc channel which made it all the more interesting to me.
Man 90s anime had to much charm in the design and art. I mean there are anime´s today that I enjoy but all of them are so clean and well computer drawn. Which is why I always will love 80/90s anime and some early 2000 anime´s becuse they are often hand drawn or such. I mean we got awesome anime`s like Slayers, Venus wars, Dominion tank police which is wicked awesome a police force with tanks. MD Geist is one awesome 80s anime that has more charm than most anime´s today.
Randomly rented this like 20 years ago with my gf at the time. We laughed at how bad it was but also rented it a few more times cause it was also fun. I completely forgot the name. I googled 80s anime where the bad guy wins and found your vid :) thx for the trip down memory lane
Glad you enjoyed the joke. I appreciate you stopping in to leave a comment. I review anime once and a while but mostly an excuse to ramble about something I enjoy.
If you're interested, a bunch of press materials and an entire production background book on M.D. Geist where translated recently, which provide an insight into a lot of aspects of it.
You story is a cover for the real story: Giest is like a sperm cell entering a egg/world that's been brought to ruin...Giest re-establishes life, and community, and learns a bit about his own tendancies too...in the end he's freed humanity who can now bring life back to their world...albeit Giest being an anti hero...Krowser was the true enemy who intentionally killed the hq to set the death force in motion...the movie ends with Giest saying Krowser lacks the credentials to be a God, after Krowser goes berserk again killing a child then blaming everyone else ...there was a lot going on in this anime...
Been a fan of this anime since the 90s, I still always make references to it especially the ending. Just an FYI the guy behind this masterpiece is still alive and actually storyboarded "redo of healer", yeah that anime.
Very much has that same feel to it for sure. I think they both came out 80s but Fist of the North Star got a live action western movie....if only MD giest did....that would have been just terrible.
Nice intro, Ian. Your Blender skills are impressive. I know nothing about anime, at all. When I saw the title I though it had something to do with an obscure MegaDrive game lol.
Thanks!, the intro actually took longer to do than the entire rest of the video lol. That would have been a great Genesis title. I know i would have played lol.
Nice cgi intro ! Is that a picture of Trip Hawkins next to the bed ? I remember renting this, Vampire Hunter D, Project A-Ko, and Dominion Tank Police from Blockbuster in the early 90's, lot's of fun !
@HistoricNerd You totally might have said it. I'm not exactly renowned for my ability to focus lol. Awesome video! You totally nailed why it was so great. Thanks!
Love you giving attention to this wonderful piece of a bygone age. MD Geist is objectively not even close to the best anime made, but is one of my favorite just from it's entertainment value, for better or for worse. Though I heavily disagree with the sequel having better animation. Most of it was just still images that barely moved and was actually worse animated then the original which makes sense as it was low budget which is why they even needed funding from Overseas dubbing companies like Manga Corps. It did have great drawings and artstyle tho.
Fair take. I found some of the elements in death force to be a bit better at least in terms of details in the animation. But over all the first one probably holds up better.
Reflecting on this anime it was indeed awkward but great. I could relate to Geist because he was made into a Super Soldier only to be used as a tool and looked on as a monster. If the Deathforce was unleashed it was due for humanity using him as a tool or weapon. He doesn't have friends, he makes alliances but it is nothing more than a truce until they become enemies to each other. Geist has Krauser to contend with. They are both MDS's but they are on different sides of the spectrum. Geist lives for battle and Krauser lives to be praised as a god. Geist has morals and Krauser pretends to have morality, Geist resists the sexual advances of Vaiya while Krauser gives into them. Geist is calm while Krauser is threatened by Geist. It is a tension of narcissism, caught in confusion of right and wrong.
I love MD Geist I picked it up at the block buster and started my journey down anime. I have both the OSTs they are great. You should do the 2nd movie.
So when you say Zoidgeist Im picturing ether a Giant zoid from that Anime, Or Dr. Zoidberg pretending to understand culture. I love both mental images.
I just finally got to find the name of this anime. I never saw this one though I saw the sequel and I remember it was called MD Geist. Kinda confused on the naming convention. Spoiler where he comes a cross a blue clone that acts as a messiah and he's outted by a blonde girl but its too late and the machines start eating people.
Yeah I always enjoyed that one as well. I vaguely remember it being on the Some VHS in same cases back in the day so it just rolled right into the sequel with next to no explanation.
@@HistoricNerd yup. Akira being exhibit A. It's not just the quality of the animation, it's all the small details in the background and world. Sadly missing in a lot of today's work.
I feel like you misunderstand some parts of the film. However, that's not surprising because he spends like 10 minutes of a 45 minute film on a multistage boss fight instead of more plot.
Geist would do awesome with a live action remake, but the story and ending have to stay the same. Keep it bland so that the twist ending catches everyone off guard.
MD Geist gives serious Warhammer 40,000 vibes.
The OST is what really sells this OVA.
Despite all of MD geists short comings the Sound Track still holds up.
I'll never get the design of the power armor with wings out of my head
It's like they're trying to break their own neck.
ANIME just hit harder in the 80s and 90s. now not so much for me
Certainly has a vibe all it's own
I very much agree.
I agree, the gore and demon/monster designs back then were unreal.
@@etgripper Yes definitely! It seemed more gritty and too
THE MOST DANGEROUS EVER
I love the track in the song "MOST DANGEROUS, MOST DANGEROUS!"
Man, there's just something about that 80s anime aesthetic. Might give this one a watch since it's a fairly short film. Nice video buddy
It's a very odd anime. But it's still pretty fun if you watch it through the lens of early 90s anime.
The "fake bullet" is to show his strength as a super soldier.

This was actually such a well made video. Crazy how it only has 1.3k views. The death force idea pitch part was hilarious lol.
Glad you enjoyed the joke. I appreciate you stopping in to leave a comment. I review anime once and a while but mostly an excuse to ramble about something I enjoy.
The commentary track is great, it's just Koichi Ohata talking about Geist as this silly thing he made in his early 20s.
I never checked that out. That sounds great though. I'll be looking for that.
MD Geist is like someone made an anime about Ernst Junger. Used to be obsessed with it 2010-2011.
If you're interested, a bunch of press materials and an entire production background book on M.D. Geist where translated recently, which provide an insight into a lot of aspects of it.

Yah that was the Man himself Trip. I actually bought the VHS Copies of Dominion Tank Police from Hollywood video when they went under. So bad/Great.
I remember thinking that the war was already over and this was just the aftermath. I thought Geist was actually imprisoned in the satellite.
Oh yeah he was imprisoned on the satellite, sorry if I didnt say that right.
@HistoricNerd You totally might have said it. I'm not exactly renowned for my ability to focus lol. Awesome video! You totally nailed why it was so great. Thanks!
MD Geist is what Mad Max Fury Road wishes it was.
Imagine Mad Max with functional armies still trying to finish the war. That'd be a crazy movie.
With long hair Geist looks like a muscle bound Axel Rose.

- yes, you see, there was a tiny flaw in their plan.
What's that, sir?
- It was bollocks!
Woah! MD Geist was one of my very first anime. I'd love if you made a video about Death force as well. Thanks for the trip back to the 90s :D
