Restoration of an Unusually Rare doorbell. A Ghost Called ME!

  • I bought this doorbell at a flea market literally for a penny. It seems to me that the seller was ready to give it away for free, but in order not to arouse suspicion, he set a symbolic price for it ($ 1). Outwardly, the bell was in poor condition, there was heavy rust everywhere, and signs of a bad attitude towards this little thing.
    Restoration process:
    The first thing I tried to disassemble this doorbell, but almost all the screws were covered with thick rust. I generously doused all the screws with rust remover and left it like that for a couple of days.
    After I dismantled the doorbell, I saw the stamp of an old English company on the condenser. The condenser was all covered with a layer of rust and, unfortunately, the brand could not be preserved, but the condenser itself was in working order.
    With the help of epoxy, I repaired the cracks in the doorbell housing, cleaned everything well and painted it.
    I also had to replace the connecting wires, as they became very hard over time and cracked from an awkward touch.
    When I assembled the doorbell and connected it to the mains, they called me....
    I enjoyed working with this old and mysterious thing, and I also think that the video came out great. Please support this video with a like and a comment if you feel the same!
    See you next week
    Best regards Max.

    That's an interesting item. The logo on the bottom of the rod at 7:34 I think is of the German company Zwillingswerk in Solingen. They are known for their knives, so what their logo is doing on a doorbell I don't know.

      @ITBR_Restoration  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wow!!! you are absolutely right! when I cleaned this part of rust, I saw a symbol on the part - two drawn little men, but I did not attach any importance to this! And now when I googled the name of the company that you wrote, I saw the same people on their logo! I'm more and more interested in the origin of this doorbell. Capacitor from England, and this part from Germany!!! My brain is about to explode🤯🤯🤯

      Zwilling produced their own steel for around 100 years. Maybe it's from this time and Zwilling was only a supplier for this specific part.

    That might actually be an antique telephone ringer rather than a doorbell. I think I have seen them wired with antique phones. Very nice restoration. A lot better then my restorations. If I did the job it would be working but still look the way it looked before.

      Definitely a telephone bell. Two coils, central magnet, and no interrupter contacts means it works on low frequency ac (not mains frequency). Plus it looks like every other telephone bell.

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WitchidWitchid - My guess is that it operated on low frequency AC, which was the defacto standard in the era this bell was manufactured (25Hz was very popular in those times and for that matter, there are actual telephone ringers which would be fully compatible with that sort of current).

    I think some folks here could be correct, a fair number of early phones were not especially loud auxiliary bells were a surprisingly common feature probably because there was likely to only be a single phone even in relatively large houses.

    The capacitor could be a german one, you can see at 2:15 the text at the bottom "Geprüft mit 650 V =". The text "10.40" on top should be the production date, October 1940. In war time (WWII) Germany used glass bells to save metall. Sometimes you can find old telephones with glass bells.

    No, that does not mean the capacitor is good. It means it can hold a charge, but there are measurements a true capacitor tester makes that a resistance check doesn't. Such as internal leakage, esr, etc. You need to use an actual capacitor tester to test a capacitor.
    That said, for this capacitor, your test may have been good enough. As it's a low frequency relatively low current application.

      @laurensvisser7623 ปีที่แล้ว

      The capacitance is of less importance than the leakage, when testing old capacitors. Though usually leaky caps increase in capacitance because the dielectric gets thinner from the chemical breakdown of the paper, so if you find a capacitor that has +50% it's likely to be leaky.
      That said, neither an increase in capacitance, nor a few hundred K of leakage will do any harm in this specific application.
