I've been using muscle memory method for years(13 now) and I still can't draw what I want to draw or envisioned to draw without using references. The whole point I took up drawing was to put my ideas onto the damn paper and I haven't been able to do that successfully after all those years. I figured I was doing something wrong but I could never quite find out what it was I was doing wrong. This really opened and changed my whole view on drawing. I can actually do what I set out to do now. Thank you so much.

This is incredibly useful. It should be a wake up call to a lot of us as well as to what our skill level REALLY is. If you have amateur mistakes in your work, as much as you get defensive about it, an employer will immediately spot them and sniff you out as amateur.
Never be satisfied and always improve

Feng is a real master on his subject, would love to attend his school, but its too expensive for me. But much respect for sharing his wisdom with us for free!
These videos are a great motivation to simply just practice and draw everyday!

You my friend have just told me all of my problems I have ever faced with drawing. the last example of students work you showed looks so much like my work now (the before stuff obviously) and look at the after work amazed me. I can see why you are a teacher, if you can explain to me my problem with thinking and work around design in 20 minutes then I really envy the students who get to spend an entire year with you.

I have been talking to my family about honestly trying to get in to FZD.
I can't really explain myself well enough, to tell you how much I value the opportunity the school presents. Also, out of all of the other options, this school is the only place that makes sense for me to try to go to.
This video helps me see where I would need to be to get in. Thank you for that, and I really hope to be in Singapore in a few years.

the thing about the type of drawing in FZD is that its not about art at all. its about effectively communicating your design, through visual representations. artistically the difference can be arguable, but its the blueprint quality accuracy that strikes. Feng has mentioned many times in his videos that concept clients could care less about the art aspect once you are able to communicate your idea. from there on its speed and design all the way

my brother showed me your episode 60 saying it would help me. and after seeing that i wanted to just watch all of your videos. I applied up at MCAD because i want a future in art and i thought that would be a good place to help tone in my talent, and when/if i graduate from there i was thinking that i could go to FZD or something because seeing how much they improved is just mind blowing and makes me want to learn more and more. I have that problem where i see all of these amazing ideas in my head but i cant get it down on the paper, but i can something if im looking at it.

This video is so true, before and after... I couldn't understand fully this video the first time I saw it few years ago but now I think I get it, to get the "pro level" you need to study everything with that mindset of drawing in 3D with construction lines etc, don't just reproduce without thinking, understanding is the key.
Man those videos, I could probably come back in 5-10 years and still learn something from it and just tell myself "oh that's what he meant, now I get it"
I was like "Yeah I'm good at copying, now what? How do I do imagination stuff then?", solution is simple : drawing from observation is training eye-hand coordination, proportion colors and stuff, it's more useful for illustration/ paintings, but for design it's more about perspective fundamentals, which is learning geometry of all kinds of objects in order to memorize them. Draw everything in 3D space !! Probably what artists like Kim Jung Gi understood at a very young age to have such a huge visual library.

  • @LeftHandedGuitarist
    @LeftHandedGuitarist 12 ปีที่แล้ว

Great video, but as a complete beginner to drawing, what are the fundamentals? Perspective? Anatomy? Composition? Lighting? What are the best resources for starting to learn these (outside of attending a school)? Any essential books? What kind of exercises should be done? Is there an order to learning this stuff, or should the different aspects all be tackled together?
I'm a guitar teacher, and there is a clear learning path with that, but I find drawing to be quite frustrating in that respect!

Wow that is very impressive how fast he was able to learn. Your explanation really made an impact on me. I've been learning by reading tons of books and watching videos, and life drawing classes. But I have heard of what you are saying, that once you learn and get down the fundamentals and ways to process visuals, you can draw anything because you learned and understand the steps to get there. I'll be checking out the school website.

one thing different about FZD is the fact the person that owns and promotes the school also 'teaches' at the school. This is hard to find, usually you get a disconnect between the teachers and the founders or owners. Well done Feng. All the best.

You've brought quite a storm here in people hearts, Feng!
At first I was shocked and disappointed thinking "right... so all my hard work, self teaching with great artists books can be compared to high-school drawings... just doodles... I'm useless".
Then I understood - YOU'VE GOT ME OUT OF WRONG PATH of "copying" artists and shown, that - without fundamentals - it can be compared to learning from "1,2,dragon" tutorials, just with "fancy" references:) Thank you for saving a lot of my time!

I'm on the same level as this person. I've been watching your videos for the past couple of years with a yearning for learning how you do what you do. I just graduate with a degree in applied computer graphics, but to be honest, I've gotten just as much out of your videos as I did in any of my college courses. Sadly, I didn't get to focus on a particular subject, rather it was a "learn maya" course, along with a lot of production pipeline exercises.

All art schools teach general fundamentals. Like color theory, perspective, anatomy, photography etc. Difference is, Feng's school is a mastery school, or what we call "specialization" in game concept design which is one masteral course for Industrial Design.
What Feng meant by fundamentals, is what is narrowed down for this specialization course only not the general one, and he will teach some workflow that professionals encounter, and these fundamentals are narrowed for game conceptualization

Hello, this' is quite the best tuition i have encountered .. i do not wish to have a career sadly, at nearly 66yrs old i feel i'm far too old. I was discouraged by family from pursuing art which was all i've ever wanted to do. However i was able to sell my work and handmade creations for over 27yrs at shows and taught as well.
Due to members of my family having terminal health issues i completely gave up all creativity. That was a huge mistake, art is who i am and is vital to my wellbeing. I am going to work my way through your lessons and hope to improve significantly. It would've been nice to do your course but i don't have a computer and have only recently acquired a smart phone and discovered you tube. So my selfie would be a dinosaur, lol
So a new chapter begins, i'm very rusty but hope that before long with perserverance i am able to create and mark make with proficiency. So i humbly thank you.

  • @Yngjust7

This is dope! I was on the path of drawing the "Muscle" way and not the "Core" way. I also thought of those things as well such as, "if I was given this type of project I would have to research it and draw from scratch." That's totally different from knowing the fundamentals and having an understanding of "how to draw" than just drawing without any of those skills. This is making me love Concept Art more and more because if I didn't start researching this, I would have never found this info out.

Hi, Feng! I study fundamentals for couple of years but I there are some difficulties than doesn't allow me to achive the level that was shown by these students. I understand that yo can't cover all the core fundamental in YT videos but I think it would be helpful to highlight couple of things:
    1) The order of studying fundamentals. What exactly to study, just basic steps.
    2) How much to study each step. Just by showing the example of the result you should achieve on each step.

  • @nickpalmerarts
    @nickpalmerarts 12 ปีที่แล้ว

This might be helpful. This is what after much studying and thinking I have learned:
    1) Storytelling/over-arching message or theme you are communicating. What you are saying in the art/design - its purpose.
    2) Composition and elements and principles of design
    3) Lighting and Shadow
    4) Color Theory
    5) Perspective and Proportion
    6) Anatomy and Gesture of Living Things

Core fundamentals like anatomy, perspective, lighting, colour theory? Yes in bookstores and they don't come as one book though, it is pricey too. Some for silhouettes, negative space, composition and more advanced fundamentals, are pretty hard to find in print. You might stumble upon it in ImagineFX issues though or google it out. Just a suggestion.

In my opinion, the core fundamentals include drawing in
perspective the basic forms - cubes, cylinders, cones and spheres and rendering them correctly depending on lighting and material they are made of.
By mastering that, building and rendering complex forms like vehicles, houses, characters etc becomes easier - if you look at the complex forms
being made of the basic ones.

  • @Ingyar
    @Ingyar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I can recommend all Scott Robertson's GNOMON DVD's:
"Basic Perspective Form Drawing" covers basics of 1pt, 2pt and 3pt perspective, squares, boxes, multiplying lengths, ellipses, shape mirroring in perspective and basic form building methods.
In his "How to draw Cars/Airplanes/Hovercraft/Spacecraft" DVD's
he puts the above basic strategies in practice by drawing the
    mentioned vehicles.
"How to render Matte Surfaces" - planar, curved and complex shapes
    rendered in various lighting scenarios.

Absolutely. But it requires a lot of time and even more effort... and yet *even* more patience. Part of what jumpstarts these amateur artists to where they are is that they had some motivation (often in the form of encouragement) or something that made them do it when they're young... becomes a cycle of improvement and self encouragement... Of course, you can do that now too, but your visual library will need a lot of catching up.

Assign a button on your keyboard to flip layer and flip canvas. This will let you see if your drawing is tending to the left or right. It's very useful especially when working with very familiar things like faces where you will not see the slant because you've been looking for so long. Flipping things gives you a fresh perspective.
If that's not what you mean, you may just have to rotate your tablet which ever way to take out that slant in your wrist...

This is quite interesting. Mainly because the construction method the school teaches doesn't seem to require as much approximation of proportion as say, Peter Han.

Hmm, so the understanding of the spacial, colour, and lighting properties of an object is more important than having drawing it 100 times. Take THAT high school art teachers!

I found a guy in America Scott Robertson and he is amazing . I just pre-order his foundation book to perspective.

the way that'd save you some time is to start on things that can be build on later as a foundation, example like study drawing to represent form first, then study how you can add tone and how it works, and when tone is there how to do color would be easier.

Don't get me wrong, I felt kinda crushed too when I first watched this video, but after repeated viewings, watching more of the FZD videos, and spending a bunch of time reading about and practicing those boring basics, I'm having a lot more fun and gaining confidence that I could actually work in concept art or illustration someday.

This is a fantastic video and a huge eye opener for me. Suddenly I can see why my art has never progressed over the years. I really need to learn the fundamentals! Unfortunately attending a school isn't an option for me but could you point me in the direction of a good online course that would teach me the fundamentals and how to correctly apply them? I've heard of CGMA but can't tell if it would be worth while. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

Can you talk more about the different types of lenses and how they change the way perspective looks? I found that be very fascinating. Thanks.
