Hey Justin, great tip about the bill of your cap. Ones hit right at us are the worst, I'll try that next year. Funny, I've played 19 years and the learning never stops!
I know this was late but I used to be a great centerfielder 2 years ago, this year I was bad and played a lot of left. This helped me remember what I did and improve on what I used to do.
Hey Justin, I like to thank you for these tips because my sons baseball team has gotten really good thanks to your tips on fielding. I've implemented all of these drills at practice and they really work. keep up the good work.
I think it just comes with practice. The more you practice, the better you'll be at it. As a general rule of thumb, make your first step always BACK and then come forward if necessary.
Adeen Harrington I base some of it on if the infield are kind of making an effort for the ball so I sprint in while watching the ball and being ready to slide
if the ball hit to you raises your eye level (head up) go back. If the ball hit to you lowers your eye level, run forward. Not entirely true for everything but its a good starting point as you practice and gain confidence reading the ball.
Too many outfielders take that bad step which gets them burnt and having to deal with making a perfect throw towards second or maybe even third depending on the runner. This will definitely help these outfielders who are looking for tips for those outstanding catches. Outstanding tips man
Hi Justin. That was great. Can we also get a video of how a kid at short or second can track and catch a ball hit into the shallow outfield. Sometimes our SS doesn’t take a good angle and our 3rd base backpedals. So I’d like to make those adjustments. Thx
Throughly enjoying the videos mate. Such great information. I recently cleaned out my garage and was wondering if you had any thoughts on devices like the swing away? The garage is too small to set up a tee and a net possibly and I'm just exploring other options out there? Thanks again for all your hard work with the videos. Much appreciated
When watching good outfielders, I notice that even with deep fly balls that will land in back of them, they know exactly where to run seemingly without even watching the ball as they are running back. Once they are in the right spot they stop, look up and catch the ball. Any tips on how to calculate this so precisely?
Practice ;) I agree though, professional outfielders are so good at reading the ball, running to the spot, then settling underneath it. There’s no magic secret. You’ve just got to work on it in batting practice until it transfers!
Dude thanks so much for the first tip last season there was a line drive hit to me but it seemed like it was gonna go back but it dropped in front of me before I realized it
I should’ve watched this before, tomorrow I have softball practice with my dad so I’ll bring my softball cap, I hope it works for me, I’ll start with a small step back but I’ll definitely use the cap method.
Always great tips. I have a question. My grandson will run back so that he can catch the ball with his glove at his waist. We can't get him to bring the glove up vertical to make the catch. The kid has been hit several times but not on those types of balls....what do we do to get him past this?
I’m okay with him running towards the ball and having his glove down because it’s not natural to run with your hands in the air. However, obviously he needs to get his hands up once the ball gets closer and he’s ready to make the catch. I would tell him to catch the ball at his highest point. This verbal cue should cause him to bring his arms up
Thanks we will keep working on it. He loves youtube (on our tv) and found your videos about hitting. He is 6 years old. I get to hear "well, coach Justin said" a lot, lol. It is amazing how much he absorbs from you. Turning the back foot and pushing with the big toe, the bat plane, reasons why his ball is fouling right or left. Today he and his grandfather went to the batting cage. He was in the 40-45 mph cage. He hit 77 out of 80 pitches. He is playing up a league AA. His age is A but a coach convinced him to go but he had to give up second base and be an outfielder. I told him, Jake Mangum plays outfield, it is a good year to work on batting and there is nothing wrong with learning as much as possible in every position. I believe one of your videos also talks about that, its fun keep up the good work we love it.
Little League players have difficulty determining what to do with the ball once they get it, especially with runners all over the bases. If you could make a video describing the mental preparation before each play for each situation it might help some younger players know where the throw needs to go prior to and as situations are unfolding
Justin, the problem I see is that sometimes the infielders get too aggressive and sprint too far out. I think there should be a limit, like 15-20 yards out, unless an outfielder is playing deep? It's much easier to run up on the ball, than back. Also, it avoids confusion, collisions, etc.
+Daniel Reisdorfer Either way works.. It's just natural once you get the hang of it. And remember, you can always flip your hips or turn over your shoulder
Lol I'm watching this at 3am... I heard the birds in the background and had to pause the video lol thought "wth the birds are out awfully early this morning" :p oops lol
Well, the most common flyball is the home run fly balls that will land close to the wall with the outfielder running to the warning track, towards the wall and trying to leap over the wall to make the catch. In this case, be sure you have a good trajectory visual of the home-run-hit ball and judge how far that ball is going to go out of the park. If it is going to land barely over the wall, jump for it and try to catch it to rob the batter of the home-run. But if the ball is going to land about at least 12 inches away over the wall--it is not worth it jumping for it especially if you do not have good jumping ability. Let it go out. Wall height is also a concern..if you do not have good explosive jumping ability in high walls, don't try to rob home runs over the wall--instead, look at the film of Joe Rudi robbing a major hit in Game 2 of the 1972 World Series at the wall to get you inspired.
I really like the first tip, I've been practicing it and my only problem with it is when it's a blooper. I start back but then I realize it's not going to reach so I have to charge back in.
The issue with the cap theory is, when the ball is shot out at a tiny angle. So the first step being a step back and tilting the head. Really, the guy said it. The only thing to do is practice in bp constantly
HoxRocks good question. What works for me is.. Look at the balls movement.. if it has a high arc, it almost PAUSE in the sky and that's when u know it's not going past you. It's falling straight down. So basically if the ball keeps moving toward you, u keep moving.. when it pauses in the air then u track it.. this is for pop flys. Line drives u use this video tips
yes i agree 100% ! a lot of outfielders get caught up in watching the pitcher wind up. but as outfielders we should be looking directly in the hitting zone. Thats where you get great jumps and reads on ball. #GGI #GOGETIT
Love your videos, my only complaint is, no offense here , but please call it a hat not cap, it sounds like youre an 80 year old man. 😅😅😅 Other than that i watch your videos on the regular.
Hey Justin, great tip about the bill of your cap. Ones hit right at us are the worst, I'll try that next year. Funny, I've played 19 years and the learning never stops!
+BWyatt76 I agree, they are the hardest to judge! Learning never stops!! Thanks for watching
I know this was late but I used to be a great centerfielder 2 years ago, this year I was bad and played a lot of left. This helped me remember what I did and improve on what I used to do.
My high school baseball coach gave us that first tip brought back a lot of memories here and you say that
What was the tip?
Hey Justin, I like to thank you for these tips because my sons baseball team has gotten really good thanks to your tips on fielding. I've implemented all of these drills at practice and they really work. keep up the good work.
nice tips bud, the brim of your hat tip is gold. definitely makes sense and is easy for anyone to apply it to their game, appreciate the video!
I got a hard time reading when the ball is high in the air if it's gonna be shallow or not
I think it just comes with practice. The more you practice, the better you'll be at it. As a general rule of thumb, make your first step always BACK and then come forward if necessary.
Adeen Harrington I base some of it on if the infield are kind of making an effort for the ball so I sprint in while watching the ball and being ready to slide
Adeen Harrington same

As a casual player fly ball is the hardest part. Thanks!
I am an outfielder and 1st baseman, great video really helps

You're welcome! I'll be sure to make more like this!

Should have watched this before yesterday's game. Had a crucial error, lost the ball in the sky. Didn't even see it off the bat.
Wesley DePorter happens to the best of us
Wesley DePorter I hate when that happens

Happened to me at practice today
You’ve got to feel bad
Dude thanks so much for the first tip last season there was a line drive hit to me but it seemed like it was gonna go back but it dropped in front of me before I realized it
You're welcome man! Hopefully that doesn't happen this year!
Made my hs team. I wanted 2nd base but now I’m in left. I struggle to judge hard line drives to me I always overrun it. Gotta work on first step back
You don't always have to catch the ball. Keep it in front of you and there's no problems
i´m from Brazil, thanks for the tips !

Just the other day I missed a fly ball and I’m trying to get better because I want to be a good outfielder.
P.S. I’m a lefty outfielder
thx
Can you make a vid on how to play first base and not let a lot of balls pass you?
Check out the SKLZ Reaction Baseball... could definitely help with practicing scooping unexpected hops!
This is helpful
Any tips for a 9 year old? He really has trouble figuring out where the ball is actually going to come down. Is this as simple as lots of reps?
thanks
check out this contraption search "fly ball launcher for baseball and softball".
this helps
I never realized that first tip
Catching when running back to the ball when it is in the air do a video on that please.
The issue with the cap theory is, when the ball is shot out at a tiny angle. So the first step being a step back and tilting the head. Really, the guy said it. The only thing to do is practice in bp constantly
Can anyone help? My issue is I don't know where the ball going once the batter Hits the ball ⚾
What if it goes up high but not far? It would be above your hat but it would fall in front of you.
You can generally tell when it is just gonna go high and not far, generally by the power you can see coming from his swing

I need some advice for catchers 12 and 13-year-olds
What if it goes high but not far?
Outfielders need to watch the batter too, learn their tendencies and get a jump

im in a traviel ball team
That's awesome, Jason!
I always think it’s in front of me and then I end up running back
Then I don’t get it, can I get some drills for better reads
90% of the time your first step should be BACK. This video will really help you out: th-cam.com/video/-8Sbwi-1hlw/w-d-xo.html

Matthew 3:2……….
We were told to watch the top of the ball and track off of that.
Over the cap go back, under the bream come in
It’s first step back.....first
Love your videos, my only complaint is, no offense here , but please call it a hat not cap, it sounds like youre an 80 year old man. 😅😅😅 Other than that i watch your videos on the regular.
😂😂😂Sounds good! Appreciate the continued support
I play softball and wear a face mask no cap
Watch your language. I really want to show this to my eleven year old grandson.
As a parent of a 12 year old, trust me he (she?)'s heard them all...
Can this crude and rude individual be blocked from this thread?
Yes, you need to report him.
When did he curse?
Wow...outside of getting set. I have a tip for you and your audience..get the hell out and play everyday
I got hit in the face today at practice ): , I'm probably seen as what I am now ... trash .... emberassing trash ):
You can’t read a fly ball you can’t see, right? Cuz I would prefer to keep my vision...
Repent Jesus Christ is coming soon……….
