Hey folks! The audio did something funny on export (it was normal while editing) so I recommend putting the sound up to compensate! Sorry for the trouble 🫠 hope you can still enjoy 🫶🏾
This was the only COHO book I read, and I have a background working with DV victims, and this was an immediate No for me. And after seeing the tone deaf promotion for the movie, I knew I made the right decision. Your recommendations are wonderful!
Really enjoyed the concept of this video, and very happy to see Only for the Week and Before I Let Go recommended✨✨ listened to them both on audio this year and loved them💖
Great idea for a video! I don’t read a lot of romance, but I read IEWU for a book club and I wish I could get that time back. I didn’t like anything about that book, and I hated the writing. I will not pick up another CoHo book, but I appreciate your suggestions.
I have never read (and will never read) CH and also don't think I'm even the target audience for her kind/genre of books and yet I'm here watching :) just cause I like listening to you talk about books, I suppose
Absolutely loved Seven Days in June, Only for the Week, and Before I Let Go! Before I Let Go really sent me on a Kennedy Ryan kick. That woman has been putting her whole being into her romances recently. Also I’ve never touched a Colleen Hoover book and likely never will. These conversations about her work is so important and yet I’m so tired of talking about her! I’m glad this video isn’t just about criticism but also how we can divert our attention to other authors who are creating amazing work and deserve more visibility!
Hard agree on being tired of talking about her lol! I've been meaning to pick up more Kennedy Ryan but I know she'll have me sobbing so maybe it's just self-preservation at this point haha 😂
Some of u ppl really Dont know how to read the first page where authors put their dedicated. and the back of the book literally on page 368 to page 374 called note from the author. where she explains why she wrote and who it's actually about. and that literally a page in the back saying where she got her resources from and that also it's an actual situation she and her mom went through. recounting what a person went through or could go through and depicting the situation isn't romanticizing abuse. its just telling u a story that actually happened with other names. it's not romanticizing anything. If that is what comes to u when u read her stuff, ur the issue ur the one romanticizing it, not her. she just retelling thing and just basically telling how real situations r. and the back literally has a thing for if ur actually r in that situation to go get help and that ur not alone. and like for whoever is thinking that in this situation, " I would leave" really? would u? ur a liar! You're no better. And if u think abused victims r weak and u would do better, ur rude. and I hope no one gets into that situation at all. telling a story about this kind of situation is not romanticizing it. when she literally tells u in the back of the book that this was her mom's situation. Ya'll r the problem. ur romanticizing it, not the author. And it's like if ur just watching the movie like duh the movie romanticizing abuse all movies do. read the book from the first page to the very last page like literally last page, then cancel ppl who actually need to be canceled. ur canceling her cause she tells a story about abuse? Ur canceling her for depicting real situation?. Ur not very bright cause like that what happens to some ppl not all but some. and if they can't get out for some reason, they r not weak, and ur no better for think their weak.
@@meraribonilla9561 First of all, I'm not reading all that. Second of all, I have a lot of reasons I don't read her work beyond one book. Third of all, I am an abuse survivor and as a survivor, I don't care for her depictions of abuse amongst other things. Good for the girlies that it resonates with. I'm not one of them.
I would say her books have a general lack of characters of colour, and even when they are included they are killed off for the purpose of furthering the main character's story (Nehemia is an example of this). There's also poor disability rep, no queer characters at all, and just extremely heteronormative standards put on the character pairings. And then aside from that Sarah J. Maas herself is a Zionist
Love the video! So I just wanted to make this comment because I keep hearing amount the romanticizing of DV in It Ends With Us and I don’t see it. DV was never romanized it was showing how a person can romanticize a relationship suffering with DV. I personally understood everything the book was saying because I personally went through similar situations in a previous DV relationship and almost all the inner thoughts Lily was having felt like the thoughts I had. I think people who haven’t been in DV situations are actually able to grasp this book and I cried at the end. It’s hard to not love the person you fell in love with even though they are hurting you. And that’s what this book talked about to me it showed how easy it is to love someone who may not be good for you when you’re caught in those situations but obviously they need to leave that situation of DV. I also am not a Hoover fan I just read the book because it was a gift. Also there is a lot of black authors that talk about DV in their books similar to what Hoover did. Just saying 🤷🏾♀️
I totally agree. I just finished it and don't see the story glorifying domestic violence. It tells a story but no spoilers I don't want to say more to give away the book.
She said Ryle is romanticised, not his abuse. (And he is, he's presented as rich and smart and handsome and that his abusive behaviour isn't *really* his fault, that it's childhood trauma, that he blacks out and has no control, which ignores the shit he pulls when he is in control and also tries to excuse him from responsibility.) He is a romanticised character, which is why despite him being the v obvious bad guy of the book, some people still root for him or think he deserves a redemption arc, etc.
For ‘it ends with us’ I recommend ‘Long Shot’ from Kennedy Ryan. It’s a heavy read, it’s about abuse too, among others,( and finding yourself after going through such a relationship), but she just did the whole thing so much better than Coho. The writing is incomparable too.
@@meraribonilla9561 I don’t quite get where did you get this information from? I did… so what? Just because she wrote about her (or her mum’s) experience with her dad, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Kennedy Ryan’s writing is better. Imo the book(Long Shot - I’ll edit it in my comment. I mixed them up lol) felt better put together and I daresay even more researched. The seriousness of ‘it ends with us’ went down a notch or two by Lilly writing letters to Ellen.
Loved it!! Great recommendations! 💕I read IT ENDS WITH US earlier this year. It was the first time I had read fiction about DV. Did not rate the book because it felt wrong. But now I think I will stick to the books you mentioned instead 👍🏻
It feels wrong cause it's actually what happens in real life and that fine u didn't rate it but canceling a person for depicting real situation is stupid and for ppl who r in that situation in real life are not weak or dumb. For whoever thinks dv victims r weak or dumb r the actual problem.
@@meraribonilla9561 Yes precisely; in my GR review I wrote this exactly.⤵ My Review: "This was heartbreaking and eye-opening! I really don't know how to rate this though...this feels like many people's biography; sadly." However, I feel like Colleen Hoover's writing is not for me, and I think we should only judge that especially with heavy topics as such. :)
Hmmmm, I don't know, but I kind of feel like It Ends With Us is indeed a romantic book, and the movie can be marketed as such, because of the relationship between Atlas and Lily in the past and present. I think that is where the focus is, or at least I felt that way when reading it. I do agree that perhaps there should be mention of the abusive relationship, but to me, the romance is with Atlas, and that is really beautiful. I am a big fan of CoHo's writing style, I think she does a really great job telling a story that is engaging.
I am not understanding the purpose of this video of downing the author Colleen Hoover to give other alternative choices. Why not just give the suggestions of the other books and not down Colleen Hoover. I have only read It Ends With Us and it was a good book that told a story of domestic violence and how a woman navigated it.

I haven’t read any Sarah J. Maas books, planning on getting into them soon, so I’m wondering what makes them problematic?
