    My grandfather made Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito and "the other" wine, the wine of our grandparents: Montefalco Rosso. The one for every day. What was on every table. His was famous then among friends and relatives it was really good. The dry version of Sagrantino can be considered the King of tannic wines. I grew up in the midst of those vineyards. And to think that in the 70s it was a wine known only in the area.
    We grew up with him! Ah, Montefalco and all of Umbria are among the most beautiful places in Italy.

      Hi Lorenzo: what a great story. I love it and I’m so happy you shared it. Your country is so beautiful and deep in tradition and history. I’m planning a visit in May and cannot wait to visit again. Unfortunately, I’m traveling a bit further south to Campania and Basilicata to greater explore Aglianico. I hope to get to all provinces and can’t wait to cross Umbria off my list. Thank you so much for watching. Dave

      @@obi-wine-kenobi My maternal grandmother was originally from Basilicata :) If I can advise you on Sagrantino, if you want to try "the best", you should have a tasting of Sagrantino from the Paolo Bea winery, in the denomination "Cerrete". The vintages that have now entered "aging", 2009-2010, are also available online. I hope you can come back. You know that anyone here is always welcome. A greeting.

      Obviously the most famous, and most expensive, is the Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino "25". There are also many bottles of 2003-2004 vintages. Great quality. Arnaldo Caprai was the winemaker who launched Sagrantino on the market at the end of the 1970s, making it "out of the village".

      Hi Lorenzo: I will try to purchase a bottle. I went and checked the data sheet. What an amazing story to have the vineyard in the family since the 1500’s. Incredible. Thanks again for watching my channel. I hope you will explore more of my 150 videos. Dave

    I had some Grechetto wine today, also from Montefalco / Umbria. Of course, that's a light dry white wine. I hope to get around to trying this bold red sometime as well.

    Excellent video. I appreciate all the background on the area and the grape. I knew none of that. I knew this wine was tannic, but I had no idea that it rivaled or eclipsed that of nebbiolo and tannat. I've been searching for the most tannic wine out there and I think this may be it. I just wish this wine was easier to find.

      Hi Jay, thanks for watching and for subscribing. I appreciate the kind words about the Sagrantino video. On your quest for tannic wine, this one is hard to beat. You may also be interested in my Madiran video. Madiran is the native home of Tannat, which you mentioned. In your quest for Sagrantino, I’m not sure where your home is but they are available in Pennsylvania at Fine Wines & Good Spirits. Matter of fact, one is even on Chairman’s Selection, at an exceptional price.

      @@obi-wine-kenobi Thank you for the reply and thank you for the tips. I will check out the video you suggested. I also have a few others in my queue; your videos on Langhe Nebbiolo, Starting a Wine Collection, and Port. I know they're random, but they caught my eye. I'll look more closely at your other offerings in a bit. Great stuff. Very thorough. Keep up the good work.

    Do you decant this wine

    • @obi-wine-kenobi
      @obi-wine-kenobi  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Archer: This wine is a “beast” and can age for decades. Because of its high tannins, I would decant a young Sagrantino (under 20 years old). Decanting older wines, you run the rush of losing fruit notes. I gave another video called the Science of Aging Wine. You may want to check it out. Cheers, Dave
