I've always felt like Joe is such a fan of stand up that he spent most of his career figuring out how to emulate a stand up comic preventing him from developing his own unique style as a comedian. The act outs, stool humping, exaggerated mannerisms, etc are all things he thinks a comic would do hence why he relies so much on it. He always comes off like someone studying for a role in a movie playing a stand up comedian than an actual comic.

I went to the comedy store a few years ago in LA. Rogan came on as a surprise after midnight and the place went nuts. Thought it was cool to see him in person but was never a fan of his stand up so I wasn’t in on the hype. His style that night was super casual and he ended up smashing it. I was surprised at how much he got me. Completely different from his specials and big shows. If he was able to bring that level of comfort more often I think his stand up career would be way more positively received.

I always thought Joe’s idea of humour is being the loudest man in the room. He also likes to intellectualise comedy which I think really sucks the humour out of any subject.
That being said though, I’m really thankful for his podcast. Hearing all these people living these amazing lives really pulled me out of the doldrums a few years ago and kicked me in the arse to improve myself and work towards being better, and in turn, my sense of self worth has improved immensely.
I just wish his barrier for entry for comedians wasn’t so low. His comedy episodes are absolute garbage seven times out of ten.

PS. I think it is mind-blowing to see how the greats are making their comedy. In a sence it shows that Pryor was perhaps a larger influence on modern comed than Carlin. Carlin had a tempo, a particular wording style that demanded being written down and done to the word, whereas Pryor was more free-flowing so to speak, with only ideas written down, to add onto while riffing.

He would be way better on his podcasts if he never attempted humor of any kind. It's truly baffling that he stumbled his way into comedy. But that goes for a lot of comedians. Before everyone and their mother had a podcast I really enjoyed Seinfeld Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee because it really helped me understand a lot of what goes into “comedian brain.”
Jerry may not be the most brilliant standup ever but he’s a student of the craft and when he talks shop with other good comedians you really get an insight into how situational comics are always looking at things just a bit differently.
I think the problem with Rogen stable of comedians is that they think “comedian brain” is just the ability to turn anything into a joke and ignore social convention but miss the part where you take it from a unique or a original perspective.
