I would love an ROG Phone but the software is what stops me. No guarnteeded long term updates (or monthly security updates) for example. In the US, not using a Pixel or Samsung is hard in terms of making it last as long as possible. If I'm spending over $1,000 to buy a phone, it needs to last at least 3-4 years and phones like the ROG are a gamble.
@@xuhwj11 Correct, but it can get unsafe to use, just like using an old version of Windows or MacOS with no security updates. Not having the latest security patches promptly is dangerous as critical patches come out monthly. Honestly, it's something people rarely think about until they are impacted. If you want to take the risk, be my guest. Some apps may also be designed to use specific versions of Android to reduce the support needed by the developer. If a bug appears in the OS or an app, it may never be fixed. Why buy something that in two years, will become a security risk with no support when other brands/manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, and Pixel will support their devices for 7 or more years? Other brands like OnePlus are also easier to mod and install custom ROMs on which has frequent updates when the manufacturer no longer supports them.
@@xuhwj11you're also saving companies money when they don't have to buy licenses for older phones or provide any updates (you know, because that cost money to do too). Seeing as the phone is $1500, I don't see those savings being passed on to the consumers.
What a great time to be shopping for a new phone. I just missed it by a year. There's no way I'm upgrading to the ROG 9 Pro, as muchas I'd love to. If you can afford to, I would highly recommend the ROG phone though. However Redmagic has a current generation premium device that won't break the bank. No IP rating though, so its kind of a gamble.
How was the OS experience, and are there any differences to other OSes? I'm using almost-stock android on a Motorola phone, and was a little disappointed on how bare-bones it was after coming from Samsung's OneUI. (But then, a bare-bones OS does have its benefits...)
@@ctrl_x1770 It's pretty atrocious. Oneplus is doing its best to emulate iOS and in the worst possible ways. One example is that they make lockscreen notifications disappear after you have unlocked your phone, even if you don't interact with them. iOS does this, but you can still swipe up and find them, they are just hidden. OnePlus actually just removes them. It's pretty annoying and there are lots of tweaks like that to Android.
If you want iOS like UI then go for OxygenOS/ColorOS or any other Chinese UI. They basically copy whatever apple does and yes there's some good and useful features alongside bloatware. I love clean UI so I avoid those junky UI. Speaking of Moto's Hello UI there's plenty to features, don't know which features you are missing other than 'Good lock'.
@@SouravSatvaya That is a fair point, and I'm not too sure why I said I was missing a lot of features now that I think about it. One feature I do miss though, is setting ring mute on a timer. And every time I change the phone from mute to unmute, it also resets the notifications sound as well, which is annoying. But overall it's a nice upgrade, very very minor problems.
@@ctrl_x1770 Yeah, every UIs have their own unique features which lacks on other UIs. I remember one of friends who was a long time Samsung user refused to switch brand just because other UIs didn't have swipe to call and sms from the dialer. I also used Moto phones and after switching to other brand I missed the "chop chop to turn on flashlight" and "twist twist to turn on camera". Yes, those were the names of those feature back then.
3:07 I don't understand. How is bigger battery in mAh capacity translate to better energy efficiency? Shouldn't it be the smaller the battery the better because of better energy efficiency?
It’s both. The 8 elite uses less power to get the same performance compared to last year. And due to improved battery tech. One plus is able to increase the battery size by 600 mah while making the phone .7 mm thinner
You forgot to mention the fact that the new flagships have silicon carbon battery which can carry more capacity and is more efficient than lithium ion.
Its such a shame that Google doesnt use snapdragon chips anymore. Im not convinced the npu in the 8 elite cant do what the tensore does (and probably more efficient) and they used to add their own chip on the device for image proccessing before. I would switch from iPhone to the Pixel but i dont want half the performance headroom for the same price.
As a pixel user, I agree. That said, there's nothing I do with it that needs better performance. Though if battery life is that much better I might start questioning my loyalty.
Google is doing what Apple is and cutting Qualcomm out. This stops feeding a rival and means costs can be reduced. For example, Apple pays around $50 to TSMC to make Apple Silicon, whereas OnePlus will have to pay over $150 to Qualcomm for the SD8G4. Google is hoping to be as cost-effective as Apple. Samsung has also tried this with Exynos, but to date, they have been unable to compete.
@@AzVfL That is true. Apple pays $8 billion a year for Qualcomm modems, which is why, next year, It will start including its own modems in some devices like the iPhone SE. Also, Apple obviously has extra costs associated with their in-house chip design team.
Switching from my realme gt 5g (sd888) to a phone with a sd elite chip is going to feel insane for me. It will basically double the battery life and run a lot cooler which is going to be incredible
Still using the oneplus 8 ever since it came out and i have to say it still work exactly like it was when i bought it while having bugs sometimes. There is degradation on the battery but its not a big issue since i still can use it almost a full day while also gaming here and there. I would this new phone with that battery life would be crazy long lasting and can be used for a longer time that my phone lasted. excited to see the longevity of the smartphones are no longer the hardware but the software side of thing
I genuinely thought the battery life would have been worse than the 8G3. I was skeptical of them using a laptop (and by extension, a server) architecture CPU on a phone, but oh boy don't I love to be proven wrong when it comes to electronics innovation. Can't wait for the S25 Ultra, going to bag one of those if the price seems justifiable
The SD8G4 is based on something other than the Snapdragon X-Elite, which is dated, probably early 2023 designs. It is gen-2 and will be what the X-Elite Gen-2 is based on. There are two reasons for this: the age of the ancient X-Elite and the court case between ARM and Qualcomm. If ARM wins and the SD8G4 is based on the X-Elite, it could be banned, so Qualcomm redesigned it. Of course, ARM saw this and has withdrawn their licenses to Qualcomm, which, if followed through, would mean they could still ban the SD8G4. Likely, if Qualcomm loses, they will pay the billions to ARM and apologise to save their business.
@@andyH_EnglandI hope they win especially since arm for years have shown time and time again they heavily favor apple even way before the tensions with Qualcomm

Nice to see how well the new 8 Elite chip turned out gen 3 felt a big downgrade compared to the gen 2, we finally have an excellent option again. Also happy to see large batteries, all I need now is a foldable to utilize these (hopefully the Open 2).
The battery mostly depends on the chipset and optimization. If the chipset is bad (example Snapdragon 888) and the OS is optimized, you'll get bad battery. If the optimization on the OS is bad but the chipset is good, you'll get bad battery too. There's many things to include to expect some good SOT (screen on time) from the device, and if one fails to impress, either optimization or the chipset, you'll be disappointed.
I believe Pixels could easily surpass iPhones if they improve their video recording plus have this architecture in their future Tensor chips, I believe those will be made by TSMC.
Samsung better release Snapdragon powered phones in Indian market instead of crappy Exynos powered. And if they don't we need to stop buying Exynos powered phones and for the same price.
Can you also talk about the new battery tech itself starting to roll in this generation as well? Especially the Chinese brands have already been releasing Silicon-Carbon or Graphene battery tech and I think this also makes quite a difference over the standard Lithium-Ion in both battery life and longevity as they also supposedly produce much less heat, even with fast charging.
Wait a minute, how did a Chinese manufacturer get their hands on the 888 Elite? The last time I checked, the U.S. had imposed a ban on advanced chips like these ??
I have a rog 5. 6000 mah honestly is too heavy to hold comfortably in one hand for normal use. If 5000 can provide full day battery, I rather have a lighter phone and bring external battery for long trip.

Still rocking my OnePlus 7 Pro which is on its way out, I do love the look of the ROG phones with the fancy LEDs. Will consider getting one though those Xiaomi Mix Flip phones look sweet too.
At this rate the one plus needs to have better cameras. I owned a 7Pro and it was behind other flagships at the time. Nowadays they’re charging very close to flagship prices and still lagging behind even a pixel or iPhone from last gen. Pictures are ok for the most part but video really puts them in shambles. I loved one plus for what it was back in the day but I can’t justify spending more than $700-800 on a phone if it doesn’t outperform a last gen phone.
Will be interesting to see what the NA pricing will be for the OP13 since it will likely be the cheapest device in the US with this chipset since QC is charging more for this than they did for last years chip.
That battery comment on charging to 80% is quite promising. On my current S23 plus, I have been keeping the charged range between 15% and 80%. The battery degradation is significantly less than charging to full. I am projecting that I could use this phone for 9 years rather than 3 years.
So excited for this one usually i don't care much about flagship battery test because for the past few years they almost the same and always the midrange and budget that preformed better in terms of battery test but this new 8 elite chipset closing the gap. Right now im using 7 gen 3 with 6k mAh i can easily last 10 hrs screen time or more with some gaming and light usage, with mobile data on and also some hotspot since i mostly use laptop to do things. I think we don't need anymore powerbank to carry since the battery life so good now and also the charging speed is fast enough, just hope there will be smaller charger that will replaced powerbank use soon

Its not just the chip, Its new battery tech too.
The latest update on my OnePlus 12 has made it incredibly fast and smooth. The phone is just brilliant. Can't wait to upgrade to the 13.
I known that was too much but yeah some features really makes it harder to switch. I also used Moto phones and after switching to other brand I missed the "chop chop to turn on flashlight" and "twist twist to turn on camera". Yes, those were the names of those feature back then.
Funny that removing efficiency cores actually increases efficiency 😅
Haha 😅
maybe because those cores were efficient a few years ago, now we need more efficient ones
Fr 😂
It's worth remembering that this is the first Snapdragon 8 generation on 3nm, that alone is probably making most of the difference in battery life.
4:04 That should be MT/s not MB/s
@@andyH_England I think the $150 includes the 5G modem, unlike Apple
@@AzVfL That is true. Apple pays $8 billion a year for Qualcomm modems, which is why, next year, It will start including its own modems in some devices like the iPhone SE.
Also, Apple obviously has extra costs associated with their in-house chip design team.
@@andyH_England I think it's not just cost but control. They can "wire" the chip to do what they went it to do in terms of architecture.
Switching from my realme gt 5g (sd888) to a phone with a sd elite chip is going to feel insane for me. It will basically double the battery life and run a lot cooler which is going to be incredible
anyone wondering why his "Impossible laptop fan" video got deleted?
some parts of the video were missing images (but I don’t know if this is actually the problem)
i too wondered
ok I can confirm, the video was removed because some images were missing
Same 🤣
The SD8G4 is based on something other than the Snapdragon X-Elite, which is dated, probably early 2023 designs.
@@kirby21-xz4rx@kirby21-xz4rx I think it is almost certain ARM will win, but hopefully, it can be settled amicably.
This is truly a generation worth upgrading for in pretty much every essential aspect of a phone, Qualcomm doing some good work man
I'm waiting for a pop-up camera 5g capable phone with dual speaker, 3.5 jack and a memory card slot. Is it too much to ask for ??? 😭😭😭😭😭
Yes
Sony phone for your back. But will you really buy it?
Excellent review 4 years of update is extremely important in order to see a seamless user experience
Play Wuthering waves! It's the new mobile gpu benchmark game
yeah because it fries people's gpu's, let alone their phones 👀
@emperorpudding216 if ur talking about the lunch I get it...but it's much better now! There's videos on YT of ppl moding the game on mobile to PC level graphics!
Its the same situation like warzone for WW(just a bit better since devs are actively optimizing), my 8 gen 1 still gets fried after 15 mins of dailies and event, so the question is should broken not very optimized games should be used for testing or optimized reliable ones? ig reviewers might choose the most popular ones since people comment about the game that used for testing
@@Mr.Cheeesse i play the game on pc but sometimes when I'm at work and can't log in to PC I play on my ROG 8 and it's doing great for an hour long session no problem
@@Mr.Cheeesse I am playing Wuwa on my OnePlus 11r (with medium resolution and rest settings maxed out), surprisingly with 1.4 update my phone does not get hot, warm but not hot. In short, how much the game has improved from day 1 when I started playing.
Nice to see how well the new 8 Elite chip turned out gen 3 felt a big downgrade compared to the gen 2, we finally have an excellent option again. Also happy to see large batteries, all I need now is a foldable to utilize these (hopefully the Open 2).
The battery doesn't depend on the chip only. This year they are using a new type of battery.Which allows the companies to put bigger batteries.
And if they don't we need to stop buying Exynos powered phones and for the same price.
according to leaks they'll only use snapdragon
Exynos yields are too low, about 20% so don't worry, Snapdragon will be available to all markets
Im with s22+ and yes I'm not happy with exynos anymore. As I play some of heavy games, it's like I can fry egg on it. Gotta upgrade next year
And fast charging. I can't live without it now after retiring 2 onepluses
They will
I think improvement is due to the new battery technology silicon carbide. My honor 200 🔋 life is phenomenal !!!
Very awesome video!
Dave2D is what MKBHD should have grown up into but instead he is too busy riding Musky nuts.
2D better than HD
Dave, your video quality is amazing. That's it.
Wait a minute, how did a Chinese manufacturer get their hands on the 888 Elite? The last time I checked, the U.S. had imposed a ban on advanced chips like these ??
That's just Huawei.
there is no 888 elite
Because Asus is a Taiwanese company. And Taiwan themselves tsmc make THE chip.
OnePlus vivo realme Huawei are Chinese brand.
Crazy how easy it was for them to fix battery life. I know there are cost factors but they could've fixed it before now, idk
Companies who don't put 6000 mah batteries with super efficient processors should be charged with war crimes....
Heavier and thicker
@@kirby21-xz4rxoneplus 13 is thinner and lighter than last year
@@eduard6450 nvm, I didn't know how much smartphone battery tech has evolved in the recent years 💀
Apple gon be in jail for a long time
I have a rog 5. 6000 mah honestly is too heavy to hold comfortably in one hand for normal use. If 5000 can provide full day battery, I rather have a lighter phone and bring external battery for long trip.
Do make sure to check out devices that run on Mediatek's offering the 9400 SoC, the November devices have been have been one-upping each other left right and center.
Finally, some non-Apple coverage
Still rocking my OnePlus 7 Pro which is on its way out, I do love the look of the ROG phones with the fancy LEDs. Will consider getting one though those Xiaomi Mix Flip phones look sweet too.
2:42 the M1 chip.
That... Wasn't a generational improvement. It was literally 1. The first.
Not on a phone
Can anyone tell me what Live wallpaper is that on the Oneplus 13 0:57
At this rate the one plus needs to have better cameras. I owned a 7Pro and it was behind other flagships at the time.
Nowadays they’re charging very close to flagship prices and still lagging behind even a pixel or iPhone from last gen.
Pictures are ok for the most part but video really puts them in shambles.
I loved one plus for what it was back in the day but I can’t justify spending more than $700-800 on a phone if it doesn’t outperform a last gen phone.
Is 7+G3 a good chipset?
You wouldn't review the phones. You won't give us the benchmarks. Then why the hell are we here?
Will be interesting to see what the NA pricing will be for the OP13 since it will likely be the cheapest device in the US with this chipset since QC is charging more for this than they did for last years chip.
Stop being hyperbolic; it's THE NEXT GREATEST THING"... for about 6 months, then we'll act like this "NEXT BIGGEST..." is trash comparatively.
Yeah that’s how technological advancements work.
The weight brothers plane was the greatest thing for a bit. A few years later it was garbage.
That battery comment on charging to 80% is quite promising. On my current S23 plus, I have been keeping the charged range between 15% and 80%. The battery degradation is significantly less than charging to full. I am projecting that I could use this phone for 9 years rather than 3 years.
How is this the first time I've heard about the op13 having local variable refresh rate???? Also that is so freaking cool
Something he forgot to mention that battery tech is changed, now it's Si/C instead of Li-ion
Hey man, thanks for the video, hope to see you review redmagic 10 pro plus.
Using s23 ultra (8 gen 2) and fully satisfied with the battery backup now. Now plan to switch as of now but really impressed to see the battery efficiency and performance of 8 elite. Looking forward to it. Hopefully in 2028 I will change S23 Ultra and switch to SD 12 elite powered phone (probably Samsung again).
oh boy finally time for a new phone, looking at you Oneplus13....
Typing this on my OP9
dave, what fishes do you keep? neon tetras?
The OnePlus offset camera looks like a mistake when it's missing the visual "connection" to the side of the phone like the previous.
Localized refresh rate on the screen? How is that even possible?
Don't forget the silicon carbide batteries.
Thank you for changing the title of the video
Honestly I'm still using a S20 FE and was considering a OP12, but I am just going to hold out for the global release of the 13 at this sort of improvement...
It's been a while since I've seen a dave2d video. They aren't being recommended enough?
