Maybe cut only halfway so they are suspended above should any water make its way into the container... Perhaps even use some thin cardboard and use the prongs of the plug to punch through it and plug it in on the other side. It's not conductive so it won't be a problem. It can act like a stand to ensure they don't droop in the middle.
