    I think one thing wren missed is that people kept watching not only because they didn't realise it was a loop, but because they wanted to see the flat surface after all the puzzle pieces have fallen in. Watching that puzzle piece render gives you an 'edging' kind of feeling, it perpetually feels so close to being complete and satisfying.

    In my opinion, the thing that makes Wren's viral satisfying render work is specifically the sound design combined with the physics of the puzzle pieces sliding into the holes that are perfectly machined to slide in with just the right amount of resistance that alerts your subconscious that the two pieces are perfect fits. I don't intend to be negative, but i kinda feel like a lot of these renders are missing that element and instead are going for the loop and complexity and fantastical-ness. I think Fenner's pool render actually is the one that gets closest to the nuts and bolts of what makes Wren's puzzle render successful, but it doesn't reach it because pool balls going into giant holes doesn't scratch that same itch of machined objects with perfect fit. Jordan's render is more akin to Wren's viral render in terms of it depicting machinery, but i think it misses because it went for complexity of the machinery, which distracts from the precision of the pieces moving together partly due to having to be zoomed out to a wide shot to see all the machinery. Which causes you to lose the details of the perfect fit machinery happening that you need to see in a closer shot. And Peter's render, while visually fantastic and as well as being emotive... It literally has nothing to do with this specific challenge outside of the farmer character sliding the house roof on. I get you can say it's emotionally satisfying and give a pass on that technicality, but come on, we know what this challenge is actually supposed to be about lol.

    I found the three elements of building the house was very satisfying…the one hammer hit completely sinking the nail, that is extremely difficult to do in real life, then one stroke of the brush perfectly covering one board with paint was satisfying, and finally the roof sliding on perfectly. As a amateur carpenter who has made a dog house and many other home projects, this was amazingly satisfying…to create something that helps someone you love, that’s amazing! Standing ovation. ❤

  • @lforlight
    @lforlight ปีที่แล้ว +227

    What I found superb about Wren's puzzle blocks render was the material. The reflections, the texture of the surface that affected the reflections, the way the different bits of the pieces emitted light that subsurfaced or something as the pieces sank. It also had a goal, in pieces sliding into the position that allows them to sink. When it looks and sounds right, the perfect motion that serves the goal gets amplified and transcends from artificial to satisfying.
    This new render just looked CGI, in the sense that it looked unreal. It didn't FEEL like materials. The cloth just forms out of nothing, its texture swirls spastically, and when the tube comes in, it kinda tenses in 8 directions suddenly before it gets "sucked" in. It lacks tangibility. It lacks a goal.

    • @BirchWeber
      @BirchWeber ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Totally agreed. I feel like the golden orb one sorta hit on the same notes. Would be easy to watch a bunch of loops of it if the material changed a few times.

    • @TechnicalGamingChannel
      @TechnicalGamingChannel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You really hit the nail on the head with the element of reality to these renders being a vital aspect. The abstract "rendered" looking stuff is always phenomenal, but that puzzle render looks like real pieces of machined metal with some abstract touches sliding into place perfectly. We've all see those zero tolerance machining videos. That shit is SATISFYING as fuck to watch. Wren tapped into that with the puzzle render. Something that looks and feels tanigble while doing something novel or "impossible" feeling is what makes it for me.

    • @VMYeahVN
      @VMYeahVN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% agree. I kinda think a lot of these satisfying renders have jumped the shark as to what Wren's puzzle block render actually achieved. It's the materials, the simplicity, the physics, the sound, and the fact that (with Dude Perfect levels of precision and repeated attempts) you could actually do it in real life. Like Technical Gaming said, Wren's puzzle render tapped into the essence of what makes zero tolerance machining videos so good. And i think it's interesting that in the video when Wren was analyzing his own puzzle render, even he didn't seem to isolate that element of why his puzzle render worked so well. The fact that it looped helped, but the zero tolerance machining aspect is what really makes the puzzle render shine.

    Alright. Hear me out. I have an idea and I think one of you is going to really like it. These satisfying renders usually loop in a 1:1 ratio, meaning that everything that needs to be reset gets reset fully at the same time before the short loop begins again. Try creating an extra long loop where different elements reset at different rates. For example, in a 2:3 ratio loop, one of the objects resets at the 1/2 mark and at the end, and another object resets at the 1/3, 2/3 marks at and the end. For a 12-second loop that would be Object A resets at :06 and :12 and Object B resets at :04 and :08 and :12.

    A render challenge I'd recommend is similar to what jazza is doing where you get a random prompt of description of a certain render (usually very vague) and all the competitors have to visualize the prompt in their own manner and art style. This will bring out a lot of waky ideas and humour while making them especially if it's one of those time limit ones. That's my recommendation hope you consider it and love your channel and vids🔥👌🏾

    Contrast!
    Great job everyone! Next render challenge should focus on contrasting elements. I think that is what Wren's first masterpiece really captured. There was significant contrast between the rough texture of concrete, followed by a smooth slide and pop that morphed into a seemless piece. I believe that is what made the render truly satisfying and I would love to see everyone's render focus on Contrast.

    I feel like a tight depth of field and high texture detail plays a big role in satisfaction and is an overlooked part of what made Wren's puzzle slider so successful, so here's my suggestion for a theme: using macro shots, make a loop that takes us back to our childhoods and explore classic boardgames, Legos, or other toys we might've grown up with. Reignite those feelings of euphoria we felt with those pieces of plastic, wood, and cardboard between our fingertips!

    There’s a type of kinetic sculpture called a gravitram that’s kind of like a contained Rube Goldberg machine. Or mechanically raises balls and drops them onto tracks that weave around each other, and balls on one track can flip switches that affect other tracks. Making a render of one would be a huge amount of work but it would also make for an immensely satisfying video.

    I still think "most unexpected twist" could make for a good hook; as with the satisfying videos it doesn't offer too much direction and there's a lot of scope for how something can be unexpected, though I'd probably add the qualifier that it should play with expectations (so not just be a jump scare or a cut to Jordan's "slightly offensive" video), could also limit it to a g-rating.
