    There are already 35 dislike for this video (end still people didn't said what was wrong)!
    Not sure what I did wrong when recording this video beside applauding the crew for trying their best to save the day
    and firefighter action to protect us from any situation!
    If you can share your thoughts, I will be very happy to read everything!
    Please like as well!
    Have a safe day everyone!

      That area is very close to the fire, and the train has diesel under the frame, up to 4000 gallons. If that catches fire no one knows what will be the outcome!

  • @RABSTRAINS

    The sad thing is that those fire extinguishers are no use dealing with a fire this size. The best thing to do is clear the area of any potential exposures and wait for the fire department to arrive. That engine has many gallons of fuel on it, so isolate the area and wait for the fire department. I was a firefighter for 30 years. Uncoupling the engine uninvolved was a great idea by the train crew!👍

It’s an obvious electrical fire but the only fire I’ve seen like this was a direct short in the battery circuit which occurred in a switch engine when a new electrician at our shop hooked the batteries up wrong & flipped the knife switch up. UP was against apprenticeships at the time & was hiring outside electricians.

    The engine in question is an EMD locomotive, but many engines manufactured by GE have high voltage capacitors in the electrical cabinet, and they store massive voltage even if the engine has been shut for many hours. If NS mechanical department personnel were present, they’d warn the firefighters not to shoot water in that area because of the possibility of electrocution! But hey, NS dumped nearly their entire mechanical department in 2020 under PSR protocols, so that ain’t happening!

      The unit in the video is one of the SD60E rebuilds.Many of them were rebuilt from Norfolk Southern's own SD60M's and acquired SD60M's that they purchased cheap from Union Pacific.Alot of the crews dislike them because of the cabs compared to the original SD60's or SD60M's.
      Most of the time it always is some GE unit that's on fire due to mechanical failures correlating to the turbochargers or crankshafts.
      Also,Norfolk Southern has the worst mainteance program of any Class 1,up there with CSX.They sell units,rebuild some just to sell them,purchase some just to rebuild or sell them shortly afterwards,or put lots of units in storage just to return them on the roster when they aren't at reliable status on top of that.Their management is just as numbskulled as Union Pacific.

    RIP SD60E
    Pretty unusual for this type of fire, usually it's an engine fire or a dynamic brake grid failure, and usually on a GE locomotive.
    It looks like the fire is in the cab. Behind the cab is the electrical compartment where there are relays, breakers, the computer, and such. It's hard to say though if they were what caused the fire, but it's possible. After all, this locomotive makes 3000kW of power, and if there is a failure, it will be spectacular.

      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alot of crews dislike the SD60E's,so it's not a major loss.
      Also,dynamic brake grid fires haven't really occured on GE units for a long time.Back in the day,it was famous on the GE "U Boats" and -7's all the time and that's why older guys nicknamed them "toasters".Motor fire? Yes,that's usual on any GE unit and most of the time it's either the seals in the turbochargers or crankshaft overpressure.However,in an unusual occurance when an EMD unit has some motor failure,mainly on older and beat units,it's actually worse than you'd think.

    • @Klisania_A
      @Klisania_A  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Slim_Slid so, you are saying that this type of accident is typical for this locomotive?
      So why do they not place more larger extinguisher?

      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Klisania_A
      No,no...This type of occurance,an electrical cabinet fire specifically,
      normally doesn't happen on any EMD or GE unit.
      This is can backtrack to what shop mainteanced the unit previously as in something that they did/was wrong,or it simply has wiring that's outdated and has never been replaced.The unit in the video is a SD60E rebuild from Norfolk Southern,those units haven't been out on the mainlines for ten years,so anything should considerably still be brand new and this can be technician error.It can obviously be a number of things but personal assumption,I'd believe it was wiring that wasn't corrected at some point while it was at some shop.

      I've been a volunteer fireman for the last 15 years, going on 16. I've learned to read the smoke in order to get an idea of what's going on with the fire. Over time, you learn to look at the color of the smoke as well as how it's flowing in order to gauge what's burning, how the fire is progressing, and whether or not the hose streams are hitting the "seat" of the fire. Firefighting is really a kind of art in that respect- you learn to look for the subtlest clues to gauge the situation.
