Gena, I appreciate the chances to look over your shoulder while you work, and teach this class for students accross the world. I started as a machinist apprentice in 1966. Part of that included a couple weeks of trying to flatten a steel plate with a reshaped mill file. That crude introduction gave me great respect for anyone who can bring a new life to a well used machine tool. Your purpose built gaging tools brought smiles and head nodding as I followed your explanations. The conversioons from metric to Imperial left some small gaps. Thank you sir.
Stunning, you take more care than I have, but it's necessary when fixing such a machine. Thanks for the video. It showed me more good info and new practices.
I have a low quality small Chinese milling machine. The center way is about 200mm long, and from the factory it was un-flat by about 0,8mm, the ways were literally finished with a hand angle grinder. Astonishing how anyone could produce such horrible quality work. Your videos are very well organized . Slava Ukraine!
I made some calculations, assuming that the basic three-meter guides have a deviation of up to 10 microns, with a working movement of one meter, the part will have an error of up to 2 microns.
Fascinating! Intuitively, I’d have started with the flat way to make a reference PLANE. At first I couldn’t understand why you used the more difficult to scrape vee ways as your reference, but then I realized you are using an idealized LINE/axis as your reference and it made perfect sense. With such incredible results I hesitate to comment, but I could not help but notice you “catching corners” on your scraper blade in the video. Stoning of course removes any inaccuracies from burrs, but relieving/radiusing the corners of your scraper blade should reduce that annoyance.
I have not had any training in scraping. I do everything at my own discretion, guided by logic and intuition. It is more convenient for me, at least now, to cut with a cutter with a small radius, or even a straight one. Rounding will not help, in any case, there will be a possibility of cutting a groove if the cutter is directed unsuccessfully. A cutter with a rounding will simply cut a groove of a slightly different profile. Only a small sharpening radius will help, but then another inconvenient circumstance arises. The cut will be narrow and deep. So I am not sure that I acted in the best way, but I had to do what I thought was reasonable.
Always great to see you again... I miss hearing your voice, but you explained this very well! It allows you to do a written script, which is not the difficult part for you, and get the robot to keep the pace quick... easier for you, and better for some non-native English speakers (or, it seems, some Brits and Yankees 😉) On with the show!
Hello! In the process of practical work on the restoration of the machine, many new visions of the process appear. It becomes possible to separate the important from the secondary. I hope to make a separate video animation upon completion of this repair, to convey all the significant events, measurements and processes of this repair in a concentrated manner. I am glad that you highly appreciated this video.
Hello! I am working on someone else's property. The owner is not in the mood to give me his attention and time. Therefore, I act based not on aesthetics, but on reasonable sufficiency. The best place where I could place all the items I used was precisely this gap between the guides. And I was quite happy with it, since nothing really interfered with my work. Now I have finished scraping, and I asked the owner to provide me with additional space, since it is necessary to remove everything from the machine to assemble it. The owner had to make an effort, and he provided me with a steel cabinet, and I removed all the items from the surface of the machine, washed and cleaned everything. It is appropriate to do this right now, after scraping, when there is no more shavings. So the priority for me is the actual repair. But it is good that you asked this question, I will respond to it in the following videos, since you are certainly not the only one asking this question.
La voix synthétique est parfaitement compréhensible. Du coup vous pourriez ajouter différentes pistes audio dans différentes langues. Les images de synthèse sont remarquables. Merci pour votre partage de très haut niveau
I have for sale autocollimators 1 arc second, there are 0.5 arc second and 0.2 arc second. I will provide more detailed information by mail. den.gennady19@gmail.com
Maybe I've always put a lot of strain on my hands and got used to it, since I've always worked in my workshop and physical effort is constantly needed. So, fortunately, there is no problem in this regard.
If you had said what was missing, I would have been able to respond, because it is possible that I had already carried out these events earlier, and you believe that they did not happen at all. After all, this is probably the tenth issue about this repair.
Hello! Thank you for your attention to my work! You write that you are from the USA and ask about buying an autocollimator. Write me an email, I will tell you in detail. I have already sold and sent two autocollimators to the USA. The buyers received them without problems. My email: den.gennady19@gmail.com
I am not aiming to achieve an extremely high level of surface accuracy on this machine-one that would justify applying a Moore pattern. Instead, I consider it sufficient that the oil will be retained in the many randomly distributed recesses left by the scraper. Additionally, in this machine, oil is supplied to the guideways under slight pressure, which also helps maintain proper lubrication in the sliding pair.
That's right! The work table will only need to be measured for the screw bend, during scraping of its mating (paired to those already aligned on the bed) surfaces. This is much easier. I have already done this work, filmed the material, and am preparing a video.
Based on your experience, how close to a theoretical "perfect flatness" do you need to get your straight edge reference before starting to scrape it? I am interested in making a straight edge, but i don't have easy access to a mill or a surface grinder. Without those tools, I am afraid I won't be able to get the straight edge within a ballpark range conducive to scraping.
Gena: there is a free AI voice cloning service called 'Speechify' that may be able to use the speech that you have already recorded , to generate a text-to-speech model using your own English Voice.
What is real accuracy of this autocollimator? The cross line is thick in comparison to minute scale. So detection of subarcseconds is hard, dont you think?
th-cam.com/video/ganEfpbRlp0/w-d-xo.html Here is the link. This video is exactly about what you are talking about. Image sharpness is related to camera focus. In the video I measure with an autocollimator with a sensitivity of 0.2 arc seconds. In reality, it determines 0.2 arc seconds. This is an autocollimator made in the USSR. Back then, the standards were strictly and unfailingly followed.

I have already finished the scraping work. The machine still has a malfunction in the hydraulic drive of the table. Now I am repairing it. But I have only just started, and I do not know the cause of the malfunction. As soon as I fix the hydraulic drive, the machine will start working.
Cool! I don't mind synthetic voice, if you SHOW YOUR FACE😊 Otherwise the internet is dead, inhabited by AI ghosts of humanity. (Hopefully we can still see the difference for a few years....)
You're right, I checked now, I really didn't include a scene in this video where you can see my face directly. That's a mistake. I'm not experienced enough yet, unfortunately. But there are quite a few such shots in other videos on my channel. I agree, it's better for the viewer to see the author.
Not at the expense of English speakers, but to the great benefit of them. And if you are suggesting that forgetting Russian ancestors is shameful, I would respond that remembering them is shameful, and all should strive to forget their Russian ancestors and their centuries of crimes and nihilism. Greetings from Canada. 🇨🇦🇺🇦

Great work Gena! Only that enormous mess between the guideways. It puzzles me that you don't mind it while working, I would be really annoyed by it.

Hi Gena!!
Did you finish all the sliding bed way of the grinding machine?
Nice work! Do you feel it will be necessary to add an additional scraping pattern for oil retention similar to a " Moore" pattern?
I am not aiming to achieve an extremely high level of surface accuracy on this machine-one that would justify applying a Moore pattern. Instead, I consider it sufficient that the oil will be retained in the many randomly distributed recesses left by the scraper. th-cam.com/video/fx2VClVIVlE/w-d-xo.html You need to watch this video.
One would think that only parallelism between the v way and the flat way would matter. Flat way tilt would only need to be matched to the saddle.
The slope should be uniform.
