- for all those who's consoles are giving you that "we cannot read this disc" error message, this is what I did to fix mine.
it started out as once in a while, a quick hit to the console sometimes fixed it, but then it did it all the time.
Basically, taking it apart and cleaning the disc drive solved the problem, here's how I did it.
removing outer casing • Xbox One Casing removal
That was single handedly one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life. I felt like I was trying to dismantle a bomb with the scrutinizing watchful eyes of my children. It Worked though.

screws are soo fucking hard to pull them off.. but anyway i did it and in the process i beat the fuck out of the console and i put it everything back when i finish and it started and all that shit but still with the same problem

Raquel J you could always get a new disk replacement and then take the old one out the put the new one in
I did this an now it won't read any disc. Exactly like you showed me and said to do it. Before it would read some disc's now it won't read any disc
You can actually blow in it super hard and it will fix, you will have to do it a lot of times tho. Because it’s not permanent

I had some issues where I put the CD in and it would make the sound like it was still trying to inject the CD so I took apart the CD drive and did a comparison for the components to yours and found out that I had a gear slip on the mechanism that sucks in the. your video was absolutely one hundred percent helpful in figure out what was wrong with my Xbox I really appreciate the video bro
Great info, worked on a Day One console. Hadn't ever been cleaned before, this did the trick.

Genius! It worked! Saved me the expense of buying a new xbox. From this point forward, I'm making sure my discs are clean. Dirty discs = dirty drives.
Your video really helped me fix my drive issue on my Xbox One, thank you! I was about to pull the trigger and buy and new drive for $50 when I stumbled across your video. My drive would only read a after putting it in and taking it out 5-7 times, it was rather frustrating.
Following your video I was able to get into the Xbox One case and into the drive and clean the roller. I used windex and several q-tips to clean the roller. I used an old disc put into the drive slot to help roll the roller when cleaning. Once that was done and put back together the drive is now seating the disk 100% of the time! Thank you again, you helped save me some green
Thank you for posting this for us all, as it will/does help, to get possible friendly advice from a person that has taken the risk of damaging their own electronics, to offer a intelligent repair, that clearly works well.

Thank you very very much.i have the first gen xbox one and it would not read any disc at all.tried the tilt method and the power mode method nothing worked until I watched this video and cleaned the roller on the inside of the disc tray.there was a TON of dirt/dust in there preventing it from working.this video completely fixed the problem
Thank you so much for the videos. My 2 year old daughter stuck a quarter in the cd slot. I figured it out after shaking the Xbox and hearing a rattling sound. I followed the steps and took the coin out. I am so happy my xbox one is working again. Thanks a million!
I find just lifting the xbox slightly after inserting the disc works just fine. I don't many physical copies but this worked for games, dvd and blu ray

It just stopped reading disks, and you’re right, the roller had minor dust on it, which I cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol.. works like a charm now!

I just did this and I am happy to say that it worked. I tried all of the other tricks that people were using and it didn't work for my Xbox. So I followed this video and cleaned the dust off of the roller now it takes in discs and reads them! Thank you so much for your guidance through this nerve-wracking procedure. can't believe that's all it took. my xbox hasn't been working for about a month. decided to try the fix out to keep from spending money on it and it seems to be working fine. thanks!
The bar didnt actually look all that dirty on mine but the bit of dust I did take off got it working. I did also just have a play around with the mechanical bits (literally just moving them manually because it looked cool) so that may have also had something to do with it. Saved me a few hundred pounds for a new series X!
Thanks for the tutorial. Had my Xbox One for about 11 years, and this has started happening with discs. Going to give this a go.
I started but sadly didn’t have the tools for the screws, so I just grabbed a thick sheet of paper ( from a pack of batteries) put some rubbing alcohol and shoved it in the disc drive and shoved it in deep in and out lol. It work!!! Years of the issue solved thanks to you, I used to have to tilt my Xbox smack it a couple times but all it needed was a little clean

I saw this video last year but was afraid to take my Xbox apart and break the tabs (I hate tabs) but it was surprisingly pretty easy. my work around during the past year was just to hold the disc for an extra few seconds until the Xbox pulled the disc out of my hand. Having the Xbox tilted back at a 20 degree angle or greater also worked. today I decided to clean the rollers and the slot loading issue was fixed. no more work around. thank you very much for your post.
Got the new FIFA and disc drive had been playin up but only ever had one game on disc and bang Fifa got stuck and wouldn't eject even with the manual eject sent two hours tryin to get the disc then seen this and followed it to the letter and got my disc out and now the disc drive works like brand new with no noises and reads discs every time we're it never did before ..top vid !!

Fixed the problem! I had just bought one used and CD wasn’t loading. Followed the video and low and behold the previous owners kid had shoved their vax card into the CD slot. Once that was removed and the rollers cleaned, it worked perfectly.
My girlfriend got me a new game and I couldn’t play it so I watched your video and it works better than it ever has. Thank you so much.

And yes it's out of warranty.
So I followed your video,and the roller bar you said was dirty on yours was the same on mine also.
So by using a cue tip with rubbing alcohol on it and inserting a old CD in and out causing the roller to turn and going all along the roller I removed all the dust that was causing the problem,and now it works just fine again.

If You dont want to open your xbox there is another solution which is to slant your xbox up at a 45 degree angle and put the disc in then it should load the disc

My game also got stuck in the disc drive and manual eject does not work for me either. I'm a little hesitant on taking my xbox apart but I would like to try this method out. Once you opened up the disc drive, is it easy to take the game out?

My disc is stuck in the disc drive, is wont come out. When I press the eject button it just makes a grinding noise. If I do this, will I be able to take the disc out and there will be no damage to the game?
At least you might be able to see what's going on why it's getting stuck. You should be able to get it out by taking it apart
k_sweg gamer there's a little hole to the side of ur Xbox its a manual way to eject disk u just need something long and steady and thin to press it

Hey man I wanna thank you for showing me how to get to the disk drive I too was having problems that the disk wouldn't grab so I had decided to go in deeper and to my surprise one of my son's had try to hide a chuck E cheese coin in the drive it self lol but yeah thanks for the tutorial
Yo, this worked like a charm, really appreciate it! The optical drive stopped reading intermittently then completely stopped reading games. Would still read some blu rays and dvds so I knew it wasn't complete failure. Lots of comments on what the tools were... Torx 9 and 10, Philips 0. Microsoft wanted me to spend time and money to send in and get repaired (out of warranty) so I decided to risk it because I'd be spending money either way. Works perfect.

My roller didn't look dirty, but i fidgeted with the gears and cleaned around. Put it all back together and problem fixed. Thanks!
The ribbon wire came off the part of my Xbox where the you sync the controllers and stuff I tried putting it back in but now it doesn't work any suggestions on how to fix it ?
Hey Thanks for the info I used your tutorial, opened the disk drive and had a foreign piece of plastic in it cleaned it out working fine now
I've been tipping my Xbox up while loading to give it some gravity assist. this is a much better fix thanks.
Dude much thanks , I thought I'd broke the ribbon to the power supply and eject button, but also the discs are getting thinner ( cheaper ) so that might make a difference cause iv only had issues with the thinner discs . Soundo il try it now fingers,eyes, and ass home crossed :)

This video helped me fix my cd drive there was no dust in the cd drive but the laser lens was dirty so i cleaned it with a dry cotton bud and it fixed the problem

Thanks! I'm gonna try it tomorrow. Have had problems since I got it. It worked fine when I bought it, then about 3 months later it started not reading DVD discs, then stopped reading them altogether. Then started not reading Blu-ray Discs and then altogether as well. Now certain discs tend to work still though, oddly. Got it repaired, it was fine. Then 3 months later the cycle continued. My room with my system gets really dusty really fast though. So I'm hoping this is the case and not the laser itself. Because there's no good way to clean correctly.

If you guys have a problem like that and its not there go further by gently taking it apart cuz you don't know if you might break something but something is wrong if its that big of a problem or take the safe way and go get it repaired
It s a bit like the old mouse pointer with the rubber ball and rollers. You had to clean them up to fix the mouse when it didnt track properly and also clean your mat
I've done this a couple of times and it worked at first but after a short time the problem returned. Any advice? I don't have pets and the xbox is on a shelf off the floor.
FYI, it doesn't matter who originally bought the xbox one, or any product for that matter. As long as it's still under warranty then the company will replace it as there is no proof of who purchased it at the store. It's not like you sign a piece of paper with your name on it that gets sent to the company. I just bought a broken xbox one off someone and contacted MS and they are going to send me a replacement. Someone paid money for it and it was badly made so they have to fix it.

Thanks for the video. was very easy to remove case and drive for cleaning. improved the loading of the discs but still wouldnt read. had to use an Uber (yes Uber) Blue Ray / DVD cleaner. so far so good. Thanks again!

I get the error saying that problem with disc drive requests for a repair but I recently just ordered a new disc drive and It has arrived today and I got the same message again and I don't what to do
I'm not getting any "can't read disc" error messages, my xbox is just making a grinding noise every time I insert a disc and will NOT read it, no matter what. If I go to the game it'll ask if I own the game or have inserted an xbox disc. I'm literally just seconds away from smashing the damn thing.

Thank you for the detailed video. my problem was little bit different but was with the disc driver. My little brother forcibly insert a disc while the xbox was off that caused the gear on the side to be misaligned. all what i had to do was align them again
Followed all the instructions. I have my disc drive sitting in front of me. Trying to clean it. It doesn't seem to dirty, but I'm finding it very difficult to move the rollers? Should they rotate easily? I am not much of a tech guy.
I should also mention, you DONT HAVE TO REMOVE THE SMALL SCREWS! only the large ones. It'll save you some time.
I need to clean the disc rollers but I can't get to the drive because 2 of the screws are stripped? Any ideas?
this is an idea why its not loading right and seems like alot of people are having the same issue. in with you with buying the xbox 1 off ebay so who knows how much the guy sold it to me played on it. well ill be doing this, this weekend. thanks for the tip. still this is sooo dumb that we have to take it apart to get it going again. if it happend once it may happen again so i dont think bothering by putting all the screw back in will be necessary just enough to hold it in place. ugh! junk!

What were the two screws you were using in the video
Will this fix a problem where if u try to put a game in to load and it keeps displaying an error message saying the disc is dirty or damaged but the disc completely clean.Because that and it not loading my disc are the two problems I’m having so far
I think I found the problem my thing doesn't have the end white part if you look when he opens it up and says he cleaned it well that blue thing has a white part but mine doesn't so maybe that's the problem but how do I fix it?
I think this problem only happens when u don't clean the disc before u put it in. if u don't then u just keep putting dust inside??

Check the ribbon cable going to the front panel. Make sure everything is hooked up properly. That part is really easy to disconnect
put the disc half way in it will start pulling but dont let go until the pull gets harder

I'm having the same issue however I'm not so sure it's a dirty roller as DVD's will play but Blu Rays and games won't. I've think I've got an issue with the Blu Ray laser.
Something in my disc drive just broke and it made reading disc impossible and if i angle the Xbox a certain way it just rattles like a car with flat tires
can you just clean it out with a can of electrical contact cleaner and duster? without having to dissemble?

When you put your disc in, did the disc drive start up for 1 second and then just stop, and does it do that 6 times in a row before stopping altogether?
So mine is Crystal Clean. Xbox one. Same one I’ve always owned ! Never cleaned it before . Still doesn’t read discs tho.

Note to self: Never leave 3 year old alone with Xbox One. Pressed eject to find sticker pop out of disc drive along with disc. Xbox One will not read discs now.
i opened up my drive and the roller is not dirty. it takes a few tries to play any game. and there is no grinding noise. on the times it does not read the disc, the disc simply does not spin or it makes a brief noise indicating something is stuck. it must be one of those plastic mechanical parts feeding the disc. i will tinker around with it when i have more time.

Hey guys, i dont have money to repair the disc drive on my xbox one, can i still download games and use it as a "digital console" or the damaged disc drive can cause some problems?
problem for me is that most of my games work. Gta and jedi fallen order don't. I thought it must be the disc but I just bought cyberpunk and it literally wont work so I have no idea.
Hello, so I pulled my disc drive out to see what was going on with it. The gears on the top have now fallen out and there seems to be a black v shaped spring that fell out too. Any chance you know how to reassemble this thing or could post a quick video showing how the gears flow together...can't find a damn thing about it anywhere. Barely even a photo of the gears
can you clean the rollers from the front then maybe, using compressed air, or a cloth wrapped around a screw driver?
jk kk I wouldn't really try it. the rollers are about an inch and a half deep inside, right next to some circuitry, if you could actually get something in that far, you wouldn't have a lot of manoeuvrability and might damage something.
