    I enjoyed the American heavy line, early tiers were fun and the T29 really helped me learn hull down tactics and the small peepee can work too.

    General Public's tank guide for beginners. First, don't go up the tiers too quickly. As Claus stated, the Russian tech tree is the best to cut your milky white teeth on. Get to tier five and get a KV1. It is the best training tank in the game and you will be more likely to get away with making a mistake. The German line is the next best for learning how to handle a tank. Avoid the all others, especially the French line. A lot of players think they can do well in French tanks, but you definitely need skill, a beginner won't have, to play them. Most important of all , when you die in a battle click and follow other players in tanks you are playing, or thinking of playing. You will learn more of what and what not to do by watching others play. I still do it and have learned more about the game in spectator mode than by any other method. It also helps to familiarize yourself with the maps and terrain.

    When advising new players it's worth remembering something. I've had to go back and buy a tank so many times to get a new tank. Advice I've given a few friends is to just research every line on each line just in case, elite everything! As you gain experience you might want to try something else.

    1:02 I started the game back in late of 2011, and I went down the light tank line. People usually suck when they go down that tech tree anyways! I sucked until I got my Chaffee on its first reiteration when it was no longer like a tier 6. I still have the racing crew from the other one, and it still works wonders. ELC AMX you better watch out for this tank, coz it can run you over!

    Hi Klaus. Good advice, thanks. I think for me, beginners for the most part should not try and progress to high tiers too soon. It takes time to train crews, skills etc. Especially now that there is extra levels to obtain with additional experience. Also, if you want to have fun playing, mid and even some low tier games are much more fun.

  • @brianlafrance4512
    @brianlafrance4512 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I agree mostly with what you said on the 277. He bounced that much because his hull was protected and the turret is very strong and was the only thing exposed. If you are a newer player you have to realize the 277 hull is not that strong against other tier 10s. One of my favorites though due to its speed. That speed can get you in a bad position quuckly though and you will be dead.

    • @artm1973
      @artm1973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great tank but of the tier 10 Soviet heavies the 277 is probably the least beginner friendly Soviet heavy for the reasons you mention. Any of the other Soviet heavies is more beginner friendly esp the IS 4, which has a great gun like the 277 but better armor and is slower so you don't rush into trouble. Well except the ST-II, that sucks all around.

    As a beginner, back 10 years ago, I went to IS 7, which I still think can be an option nowadays. Then I got the IS 4, also a viable option nowadays. The 3rd line, surprise!, it was the Grille (actually it should've been Waff, but when I researched it, they removed it 🤣🤣).

    the russian medium line T-34 to Obj430U looks good so i am just to start T-43 which is said to be the weak spot. the russian heavies to Obj277 the KV-1S at tier 6... omg, play it like a medium to get through... so i hope it starts getting better.

    In my case someone told me to go for Russian heavies and mediums. I am still at t8 and 9 and I can tell you I got shredded in my kv85 and IS. They told me this tank has amor but I never felt that. I had the feeling I was matched against players who knew how to use these popular tanks. With my stock crews it was a slow paced unfun experience. Maybe the is7 is better but I have to face all the players who maxed out their tanks and have played this tank a lot more while I join a new tier and trying to not die within 2 shots and searching for weak points of tanks I never played. Wot is a harsh game for new players. I changed my winrate from 47 to 52 and still think I am one of the worse players in my team. I can't remember caliber and DPM and stuff like that which the unicums always kind of know. Tbh I learned the most im arty about map positions while in hawk mode. I see where to hide and I have enough time to learn the positions because I didn't die after 4 mins

    Cool video. I like your speaking presentation. Fun to listen to.
    I've been browsing youtube videos today looking for tips. In terms of how long I've had an account, I'm not a beginner. But in terms of my actual skill level, yeah I'm a beginner. haha
    I played the game back in 2013 and stopped around 2015. I only re-downloaded the game yesterday after all those years. A lot has changed. A lot hasn't.
    Most of the tanks in my garage are the slower bulky heavy tanks sadly. Given a choice, I think I would prefer a good all around medium, or at least a heavy that functions like a medium. The Obj 277 there does look like something I should get. I have the Chinese WZ-111 5a or whatever the main heavy Tier X is. It's been a while, forgive me. I have the E100 and the Super Conq for my other tier Xs so far.
    Right now though, the problem I'm struggling with isn't so much the tank I play, so much as it is how to leverage the maps. Every single game starts with me going to the designated heavy tank area, reaching the middle point of that area, and waiting in a stalemate for the other team to rush out foolishly. No joke, every game goes the same- I reach the middle of the lane section, do my best to position myself in a proper side scraping angle, and wait for the enemy to poke out. One of 2 things happens now. Either I lose my trades because my angle is never correct (or they loaded gold rounds), or both of us sit here for 5 minutes waiting for the other player to make a mistake.
    Many games I'll feel too crowded by my own allies and can't even get into a proper position. I either crowd them hoping for a shot, or I sit back and just wait with my thumb up my butt.
    Trying to go off on my own in a heavy tank is bad idea. Not enough mobility to get out of trouble, not enough vision to avoid it. No.
    Gameplay like shown in your video here make everything look easy. And to a good player, I suppose it is. I just want to understand what mindset I need to learn and how to actually make an impact regardless of my team. I'm tired of sitting back waiting for things to happen. I'm tired of not being able to block shots even when I'm side scraping. I'm tired of stale mates.

    If I were starting over again I wouldn't even bother going beyond tier VII or VIII. I ground out an E100 and I still can't be bothered to play it because tier IX and X are so expensive to play and everyone is spamming gold that it just isn't fun. The people who don't have premium accounts and aren't using gold ammo / boosters are basically just targets. Same for VII and VIII too to an extent but you can usually be okay especially if you buy a premium tank or one with bonds and can earn some credits. I'd also avail of things like Christmas events to get some free crew and slots just to help diversify a bit.

    The British and American turreted TD lines aren't too bad for newer players. You just have to learn quickly how to use concealment properly as they don't have much armor. A completely new player may not enjoy them, but after playing the game long enough to get a feel for the spotting mechanics, they are fine.

    • @vertik7
      @vertik7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with TDs is not their armor - it's their HP. They don't have HP, heavies get the most HP, medium tanks a little less, then TDs, then lights/arties. TDs even with lots of armor, don't have much HP and get shredded with gold ammo and don't live long. So, a faster TD with a good camo sometimes better than armored slow TD.

Sold my tier !0's, re-purchased IS3 and put old IS7 crew in it, shuffled high end crews around with the credits from selling Tier10s. My formula is play the IS3, then I play another tank. Then back to IS3. This is to make credits to purchase the other Russian heavies, and meds. Ive found I have more fun casually playing. I'll dabble in the LTs I have and the meds. To me the Italian Medium line was far more user-friendly than the Russian Medium or Heavy line. I started it and finnished it in a few weeks and was pleasant, the Russian lines I started them around 2013 (because people told me I should do it) and I still didn't bothered to finnish them. Heavies? Not really my cup of tea (although if it was my cup of tea, that would most likely be the way to be). Mediums without gun depression on this meta/maps? Hell with them.
    People should just try a few lines/nations up to Tier V and see what fits them. People always say: "You are a begginer? Play heavies!" - then they stay at the base camping behind the TDs with the heavy tanks because they like to snipe and don't like to brawl. Just try a few lines (mainly Heavy and Medium and TDs) up to Tier V and see what fits you.

    in the American line you get 2 beauties, the T29 and the T32. Also even though they are not very competitive, the Maus and the E100 are both very beginner friendly because all you need to do is sidescrape and they just have good overall armour.

    • @edelmann4388
      @edelmann4388 ปีที่แล้ว

      have you played the mid tier americans lately? after the buff for T1, M6, T32,.. the world has changed a bit. worse, the T29 got nerfed, so you may update your experience. for the german heavies, i think Claus is right in not advice it for first grind. even in the mid tiers one needs knowledge how to use the armor to have the battles you want. fail the armor and the only reward from the vehicles is pain, even the good guns will not help you.

    • @garyhardison9265
      @garyhardison9265 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love the American lines but at tier 9 and 10 it seems like they’re behind the times, the medium tier 9 medium gun is equivalent to the tier 7 French heavy, same pen on gold

    • @nostalgicleopard4036
      @nostalgicleopard4036 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edelmann4388 True, you make a good point. I am aware of the t29 nerf, I called it a great tank because of the alpha, and good mobility combined with a turret some tier 9's cannot pen unless they have high pen heat rounds. Also the mid tier German heavies are quite bad. The only one I want to play is the vk36.01h because it is fast and has a very nice gun. Otherwise it is also meh. I meant that the e75, e100, mauschen, and maus are quite easy to play because you only need to sidescrape and be careful about exposing your turret front

    @etwkoelle6487 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Claus,
    as a "WoT veteran" I'd think I've got to comment on your proposals ;)
    First of all you picked two tanks, although one on the paper is a heavy and the other one a medium, which are quiet similar. Both with 340 heat pen and similar gun handling and decent armor. While the 430U has a bit higher DPM it lacks - suprise - a bit of mobility compared to its heavy counterpart 277. Nevertheless, playstyle is more or less identical.
    I remember from the past that one of the main issues for WoT-rookies is a lack of gun depression (place a "china tanks warning!" here ;)). New players wil quiet often struggle with the 5.5° and 5.0° we got here with 277 and 430U.
    In terms of "forgivingness" I would highly recommend IS-7. It lacks a bit of penetration with premium ammo as it comes with APCR (303 pen) but it has decent gun handling. Further APCR instead of HEAT also has the advantage that you do not have to struggle with tracks, spaced armor and some obsticles standing around. I could even throw in the (Super) Conq here, as a well balanced (kind of slowish) heavy.
    For the mediums, again based on gun depression, I would recommend tanks like E50M or even the Patton. Some armor and great gun handling with fantastic view range.
    In general my advice for new players is:
    - Your tank shouldn't be made out of paper (like Claus said: don't start with e.g. the Leopard)
    - go for a tank with good gun handling and gun depression (and doublecheck gun elevation ;))
    - start with slower tanks (e.g. Super Conq on the heavy side)
    - go for (real) autoloaders like batchat and TVP later in your "career" (probably use auto re-loaders like italian mediums first)
    And finally: Enjoy!
    Zeke

      All very good advice. The only difference between what you're saying and what the video was actually about is that you're talking about specific tanks. While Claus showcased only two tank games (The tier 10s of two complete lines), he was talking about the *entire line* being user-friendly. Quite the opposite of what you've suggested.
      For a casual player, I'd stick with Claus' advice to give them. For a player that just wants great tanks and doesn't mind the painful grind to get them, then your advice is what I'd suggest they do. You're not wrong at all, just missed a bit of the nuance of what Claus was trying to convey. The grind is what kills the fun for casual players.
      In the grand scheme of things, if new players stuck to what Claus is saying, I think we'd have more enjoyable games overall for everyone. Even for those of us that are experienced by way of having teammates that might live longer than 2 minutes per battle. ;)

      @@Theorica Although I did not explicitly mention it, I still had the grind in mind. From the tanks I highlighted, the only grind that might be a bit painfull is tier 6 and 7 of the S- Conq line. IS-7 is up to tier 8 the same as 277 where the tier 9 of IS-7-line (Obj 257) is exactly the "randomly bouncing machine" Claus was talking about...

    I would say, IS 7 instead of Obj.277 - stronger at tier 9.
    Grind to VZ 55 is also an ok experience (excepting the coffin shape turrets on the line).
    Obj 430 U is good for medium line.
    Also the line for E 50M was nice for me.
    Ob 268-4 for TDs - strong from tier 7.
    The russian tech lines also have a number of equipment used on several vehicles - researching one gun or radio for example, will make it available for another tank line.
    My list would be: russian, german, british, american and then the rest.

But i fully agree with beginner friendly cause they teach you gamemechanics which are adoptable to all tanks.

    I don't know how the grind is anymore, but a few years ago when the Russian 268 TD was relevant WAY before the 268-V4, that was a VERY easy line especially from T-8 to T-10, because back then the ISU-152 had the BL-10 gun and absolutely dominated even if you were bottom tier, it was a monster BUT the next two TD's you got, the T-9 had the BL-10 Stock, and the 268 I think had it also, but not sure

    Ave Claus. First thing firts: "bless you" becouse of the sneesing. 😁 Hope you just have a cold and not the other thing... When i started to play WoT, many moons ago, i started off with the German line and had many wonderfull hours of gameplay. After a break (7years or so) i have returned to the German line. I stil like that line, altho many tanks are Nerfd. Favorid(?) way of playing is by tier. I am now on tier 5 and 6 with my tanks. That way i got a licht, medium, td a d ky beloved Arty's to choose from. When im in the mood to hunt: TD, when i want to drive around: light and medium. When i want to release hell from above (and eat my diner 😀): Arty... Personaly i like the variant of tanks that i have this way and stil enjoy playing them.
    Best advice i can give to beginners: just have fun... Try to do your part in a game, try to do it well and have fun doing it!
    Hope you feel better soon...😁👍

I trashed my won rate in it before I figured out that I play it better that way. Maybe I'm just worst at heavies though....?
