I remember how excited and even emotional I was hearing songs like Its Different Now, Tiger Man jam, Twelfth of Never and the epic up tempo take of She Thinks I Still Care (and more), arguably the best box set RCA has released to the main stream public. Nice review guys.
Great video, I try not to watch to many video's now and save them for later, but What can I say, I am addicted to the video's 🙂 I am a proud owner of all the three 5 cd boxsets. The Complete 50's Masters, The Essential 60's Masters and the Essential 70's Masters. With the books in them but very sadly only my 60's boxset had the stamps in it, the other onces didn't. Maybe I had to complain when I bought them but I didn;t think much of it back then. Now I really regret it that I don;t have the other stamps. The books are very informative and helpfull. I really love all the cd's, I also ripped them into mp3 for my phone. Currently I am at 159 albums with 3402 songs on my phone and all are only Elvis 🙂 I prefer the late 60's and all of the 70's Elvis songs from which most and i repeat: Most of them are unknown to many and are really underappreciated. ( sorry for my english for the English speaking community)
Thank you so much! Yeah, we have over 240 videos now, so there's a lot to go through! :) And that's cool that you have the box sets! And you're right; there are many songs in there that are hidden gems to the public! (and don't worry - your English looks good to me! 😁)
The 60s box is my favorite cover. Elvis looks so dashingly handsome in the black suit with the red background. The 70s box is my favorite musically. I love all of Elvis’s music but the 70s is my jam. I’m glad you guys mentioned that Early Mornin Rain was a glaring omission because not only is it my personal favorite Elvis song but it’s so overlooked in Elvis’s catalog in general.
I love all the boxsets, but the 60's song list is crazy! If they couldn't put "Can't Help Falling In Love" on there, they could have at least put it as the last song on the live disc of the '70's box!
These are unbelievable sets! I absolutely love them! It's hard to comprehend just how many great songs Elvis had!! Wow, thanks for another really fun video guys!!👍⚡
Love this box set. I've never had the 60's but I have an updated version of the 70's which has a smaller book style open box like a book. I also had the 50's box set on cassette. Great sets. TCB ⚡
Definitely, Michael! And yeah, I saw the smaller sets when they came out - great concept, and I would have gotten those if I didn't already have these, since I actually like the smaller packaging from a space-saving standpoint.
Hi ! Absolutely love this set, including the cover shot, no matter what you say ! Lastly, just wanted to mention a very important fact,in Europe, all three Cd-boxes were released in LP sized boxes, which means the booklets were LP size as well, so much better !! Geir, Norway.
Love that booklet, stunning photos. Thank you so much for the flip thru❤❤❤❤❤ I have just come home from the Elvis Festival concert here in Melbourne, and am on a HUGE hi after watching four of the best ETAs from the States and UK. Looking at all those concert photos in your booklet reminded me of the guys I had just watched❤❤❤
The 70's Masters is particularly great, especially all the live selections... sound quality is still good too! Unexpected My Way studio take, although a bit sluggish...
I think the cover shot is stunning, especially when released on the big box in the UK! I think I relished this release even more than the 50’s box. Being a fan in the early 90’s was a treat for the first time getting “virtually” everything essential remastered on CD
Agreed! I think it works really well - and I wish we got those LP-sized boxes here in the U.S.! And 💯% agreed on the 90s - not perfect, but a great time to be a fan!
Another great video of another great set! There are a few tracks I wish were on here that weren't, but overall it's a wonderful 70s collection, including the unreleased stuff.
Hey Guys great video and a nice completion of this particular series of overviews. Because I am somewhat a slightly more than casual Elvis fan, these boxed sets appealed to me greatly. Without knowing about 'what was missing', they filled the bill greatly. I understood the concept of these sets. You are correct when you say that these boxed sets were a game changer. The CD format had come into its own by then and record labels were finally getting their act together in the 'back catalogue compilation business'. I have a lot of CD boxed sets by different artists and I came to realise that, if done with some care, love, thought & consideration, they would be valued releases. For myself these were enough for a long time. Yeah I found other Elvis sets along the way, such as the excellent "Platinum: A Life In Music" and "A Golden Celebration", which I was somewhat disappointed with. I called myself a 'casual' fan but my CD & record (especially my 45's) collections might say otherwise. 😅 I have done some comparisons. Yes technology has improved over time and so has remastering techniques. However lets not diminish these boxed sets sonically. They're still very listenable even though they're firmly of their time. Love your work & the channel guys. Cheers 👍😊
Thank you so much, Peter! You're absolutely right on these being a huge deal. And I'd agree on wanting to respect these for what they were at the time, though we do also have to have an eye on new fans who want to know which sets are the best to get for sound quality - so we have to thread the needle a bit there. So glad you're enjoying the channel! :)
Great review. Listened to this set continuously when it first came out . Hadn’t listened to it in quite a while. I spend a lot of time listening to the the unsweetened masters and alternate takes on the FTD CDs and I sometimes forget how good a lot of those singles are. Enjoying now. Thanks
That's awesome - and you're very welcome! It's fun to remember these set now and again, as well as revisiting the original masters (since I do the same thing, listening to undubbed and alternate recordings most often). 😁
I would have released this in the same style as the 60s box, complete studio masters on the box and a separate 2 disc set for the live takes. No early morning rain, no help me make it through the night are you kidding me.
Great retrospective on these seminal sets! The 50’s box set the precedent for COMPLETE studio masters. Absolutely fantastic set. Impossible to do that with the 60’s material within 5 discs, so I think they chose the next best option. I, too, was a bit perplexed with the exclusion of certain songs, but in the context of the other 60’s collections released during this time, it makes sense. To get the rest of the 60’s material, you knew exactly what you needed and what to get-Double Features, along with G.I. Blues and Blue Hawaii, gospel and ‘68 comeback discs. While Walk a Mile in My Shoes does give a better overall view of Elvis in the 70’s as a whole, I really feel they should have stuck with the 60’s set format of complete secular studio masters, in chronological order. At the time it was confusing to me exactly what I needed to complete the 70’s masters and it took me a while to finally collect it all.
Thank you so much - so glad you enjoyed it! And thank you for sharing your thoughts, too; funny about the 70s masters, as that was exactly my experience in trying to track the rest of them down!
The 70s set is still a worthy addition to any collection, and the sound is still competitive. I can't remember though if 'I Really don't want to Know has that extra drum roll thing at the very end? It seemed to disappear from all future releases? Even the the Nashville Sessions releases? Cheers JnJ. ❤
Hi, Denny! It's still very, very good, though I don't think it's still definitive for new fans looking for the best source. And I think this does have the drum roll, but I don't remember for sure and I don't have the set with me to check - but yeah, I love that roll!
wow, nice episode, as always... when you paged through the book, i was reminded of "Elvis in Demand" when i saw the album cover... that album was legendary in our house in 1977, that golden looking album, and i remember it had the red sticker on.... i thought it was an awesome release... though we were not very careful in handling the LP record, so there occurred a skip of the needle at the start of Hi Heel Sneakers which is still burnt into my memory when i hear the song... 😄
Hi, Helge! Thank you so much! And yeah, it's wild what sticks in our heads over the years - I have a similar story with "The Yellow Rose Of Texas / The Eyes Of Texas"!
As a compliation the set was great for the time. But I remember feeling let down because the 50's were complete (for the time). The 60's set did provide all studio recordings except for Gospel/Soundtracks/live but these were available in other sets/releases in newly released complications. When came to the 70's again I understand not including all live/gospel/christmas material as these would be available on separate compliation releases, but because it didn't include all studio tracks, it meant having to buy multiple separate individual album releases just to have all 70 studio tracks on CD. I just wish it had the missing studio tracks (other than live/gospel/christmas) but perhaps the idea (at the time), was you had to buy more releases to be complete. But unlike the 60's set there wasn't comprehensive re-releases that made it easier to collect all material. I would have dropped the live disc for the missing studio tracks but then released a live set. I think (for the time) they only wanted 5 discs and they didn't think commerically it would sell as well if it didn't have a cross section of material. It's a seems that all 3 sets seem to have different agendas but at least the release strategy for the first 2 made it easier to collect all material.
Hi, Brandon! You make some great points, and I do remember having similar thoughts at the time once I discovered what all was missing on here. And they do seem to have different agendas, which I think has to do with public perception at the time. But yeah, having all masters from a decade in one place would have been nice!
Hey Guys Elvis: "The Essential 70s Masters" CD Set cool boxsets great songs would be nice see more cool songs from the 70s from elvis on the boxsets keep up cool work you do for all us elvis fans round the world long live the king of rock n roll
Jamie, when you showed all the sets together at the end there, you briefly should have shown the gospel and christmas sets from ‘94, along with the double features, to show how all these releases together tell the whole story ( well, almost !).
Hi, Geir! That's a good point, and one we didn't think of until after we finished filming, lol.. but we will absolutely talk about those sets later in the season!
Fantastic review John and Jamie love the selections on this great 70s box set a little unrelated is one of the most interesting realises of the 1970s is the 1977 Vinyl LP Elvis In Demand I thought it was amazing at the time not sure if it ever came out on CD . Jamie you still look cool in that Speedway jacket and Steve Grayson still nods his approval cheers Carl .
Great video! I definitely KILLED this Box too, growing up!! I was disappointed that "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "My Babe" were omissions...what d'ya think? To balance that out, I was ecstatic that "We Can Make the Morning" made the cut...because that's one of the greatest UNDERRATED Elvis songs of all time!
Thank you so much! I love the 1969 versions of those, but since they were 1969, I can see why they skipped them on here - they should have been on the 60s box, though! And agreed on "We Can Make The Morning!"
Well, my very first Impression of this Cover Pic Elvis Box Set, was like..."Elvis is kneelin' on a Surfboard with his Jumpsuit on, a slow-nice-cool Hawaiian Sea Wave; it is deep after Midnight plus our King has a mic in his hand and sings a capella "Aloha Oe"🌊🌴 Jokin' aside; The Original EU Compact Disc BOX Set was in a LP Size format and it really looks like that😂 Well, now talkin' about the content: i guess CD 5 is a very bad choice! Elvis Live in the 1970's is cool after all, but the most beloved Recordings EVER by all of the 99% Elvis 1970's Devoted Fans "Live In Concert" love this Songs! For a Complentist it was/is really disturbing, the same goes for the 60's Box-Set (i've criticism before no Movie Songs etc...), So the Question is, why including some really good Live Song Compilation and NOT the Complete Elvis 70's Studio Recordings; but so what, it is what it is😶, for the Record, a worldwide Vinyl Edition was NEVER EVER released of the 70's Box Set! Thank You John and Jamie👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Harald! Now I'll always think of this as "70's surfboard Elvis!" LOL! And yeah - not having all of the 70s output is certainly odd!
Hi, Andy! Thank you! The reason we do commercial breaks is we don't want the ads cutting into the middle of something we say or part of a conversation - I always hate when that happens. So the ad breaks keep from making the ads just cut us off. :)
ok thanks ,,,I have youtube premium so there are no ads for me ,so its why I asked ,,thnks for all your hard work and efforts on this channel @@EAPSociety
For a long time I thought that this was the most weakly compiled of the 3 sets, but upon closer inspection, it's better than the 60s one. There just aren't as many egregious exclusions. Early Mornin' Rain is definitely one, and I would replace Susan When She Tried with Fairytale. Making the first 4 discs chronological would probably improve it a little and the live disc would be stronger with the inclusion of The Wonder of You and Steamroller Blues. The exclusion of the gospel material doesn't hurt it at all IMO - He Touched Me just isn't as strong as the other two gospel albums. Interestingly, the same secular designation is made for Amazing Grace on Back in Nashville as it is here. Definitely an Ernst decision that remains. The live disc is indeed lacking- the biggest problem is including Suspicious Minds from Aloha. That version is absolutely not better than a 1970 or 1972 version. Even the Memphis 74 take might be better. This disc does reveal another issue with the 60s box- no live 1969 tracks. A couple of those would definitely help this disc, but that's a trapping with sticking to the decades concept.... As far as the rarities go, the star of the show is definitely She Thinks I Still Care take 2B. That's one of my favorite outtakes; it's much superior to the master. The only good mix of it though is on the Moody Blue FTD - this one has some overdone reverb on the snare and the Way Down in the Jungle Room mix has that damn slapback echo. Ferrante did do a good job on some of these new mixes, digital reverb and all. My biggest problem with his work isn't the actual mixing, it was his sloppy digital editing. Bad crossfades, bad cuts, and first notes cut off (see Steamroller)....
Thanks for sharing your detailed thoughts - and you make some great points!! I'm going to pin this comment so more people see it, as it's a great addition to what we said!
@@EAPSociety Are you guys familiar with the live "never been to Spain" on this box set? The reason I ask is because for some reason, this is hands down, THE BEST live mixed sound I'VE EVER HEARD, and I've heard everything. Have you guys listened to this with a good pair of headphones? It's pure perfection, as if you are in the actual showroom. Your thoughts?
I understand why...it has to be for the average fan too....but at the time I wanted everything.....as good as the 60's set is....why not slap on the religious songs...and then a complete soundtrack box.....I mean they fixed it years later...but I was rather disappointed at the time....especially how amazing the 50's set was. I ended up buying the movie tins filled with double feature cds.
Love this box. First time I heard It’s Different Now, I kept thinking “keep going!” I was expecting him to stop at any moment.
Agreed! I absolutely love that song!
I remember how excited and even emotional I was hearing songs like Its Different Now, Tiger Man jam, Twelfth of Never and the epic up tempo take of She Thinks I Still Care (and more), arguably the best box set RCA has released to the main stream public. Nice review guys.
Absolutely! Us, too - and thank you so much!
I wore this box set out
Same! :)
Fun fact this is the first Elvis box set that I ever bought. I was always mesmerised by his voice in the 70s.
Oh, very cool! That's a great set to start out with!

I always thought because the title of collection had 'shoes' in it, they chose a great shot of his cool footwear while he strikes the pose.
Hi, Robert! You know, I never thought of that before, but it's a great point!
Great video gentlemen. I remember making cassette tapes adding songs from the 60s soundtracks and it really enhanced the listening experience
Hi, Gregory! Oh, that's a cool idea!
Hiya John & Jamie. fantastic could not wait for the sets to come out, & i framed my set of stamps ,, Awsome.. Keep up the Good Work.. 👍.

My set omits the photo on the back of the book (elvis in car)....was there a copyright issue? ,can anyone shed light on why it was removed ?
That's a very good question, Andy! I'm not sure, either!
Would be great to get improved sound releases of all the tracks (and versions of tracks) that can't be found on RCA Albums Collection.
love this channel , but whats the concept behind the commercial breaks ?
Hi, Andy!
@AndyX You're very welcome - always happy to help. And thank you so much! Lots of fun stuff to come!
The 2/4 on stamp sheet represents the format . 2 being CD and the 4 being cassette or LP not sure which one the 4 refers to . It’s not 2 of 4
Thank you, that's very helpful! 😁
Lmk if can give u guys a call . I have questions n some info .. and stuff

Are you guys familiar with the live "never been to Spain" on this box set?
