Good work , I started as a hard carrier in Southern California when I was 17 and now live in Omaha Nebraska as a journeyman plaster at 25 , I’ve done many STUCCO / EIFS , interior plasters and I’m proud to be a plaster ! It’s great that you try to show guys my age and younger to learn our great dying trade .
Evening Drawing on everything dude,😉 Plastering is the main substrate in the whole world. It's far from dying. In fact, it's the opposite. It can never die as it's necessary, and the absolute longest exterior siding is known on the planet. No other exterior wall systems can even come close to its strength and fireproofing abilities. Stucco's longevity is also second to no other substrate. Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. @Conrad Austin I thought there was a little stretch or BS to Kirk's claim, but I searched for one or two topics and sure enough I found a video that covered it. After watching many of his videos, I was able to stucco a few small walls on my garage, including patching 1/2 of one wall and blending into the existing painted stucco and then doing color on the entire wall and his videos even covered how to repair horizontal cracks with drywall tape and cement patch. My scratch and brown were a little thick so I didn't keep a good wet edge as I worked down the wall (painting term as I was a pro painter for many years). After a month or so, to my surprise, the cracks have not reappeared. I have patched stucco with rapid set before but this was my first crack at scratch, brown, and doing a lace finish. I did a bunch of concrete work and finishing last year and a bit before that and I can tell you that concrete products are guaranteed to crack. Following the pro tips from Kirk, I like my odds of keeping future cracking to a minimum...........I did after all follow his directions to get my scratch and brown to crack before color. Long post, but as a pro in various trades and a person with a critical eye, I greatly appreciate all of the videos Kirk and family have made. It is full of great info with none of the BS of tv shows and many forums. Even if you don't do your own repair, you will have an idea if a pro you hire to do it actually knows their stuff.

Hi Kirk, i have only recently become a real fan of your work an videos. I am currently doing a small landscaping job...rendering a masonry block wall 4 courses high. Previously i had only ever used acrylic texture coat...and to be honest, the stuff is a pain in the behind. I now use polymer modified cement renders and am loving it. Probably the one thing that i have picked up from your videos...dont stuff around trying to get a mirror finish when applying the render. Just slap the stuff on, give it a quick spread and move on. I then come back after and flatten/level sections up. I apply my renders a little differently in that i apply it with the hawk (probably wouldnt do this on a large area but it works great on small retaining wall low to the ground). I tend to screed off with a 600mm concrete float as i dont have that straight edge you use. Anyway, thanks for the videos...i have learned a lot from you. kind regards Adam Sydney Australia
Looking at your tricks and tips, I remembered the last time I tried a one coat stucco patch it would break and fall at the seam, I probably kept pulling from the old to the New wish I Knew then...lol

Good evening Brgitta, sure, Hansons makes white cement plaster, and so do many of the stucco companies. Keep in mind white stucco mixed with tan sand mean's a light tan finish rather than a grey-colored finish. 😉

BTW, I don't agree with floating the whole wall in certain circumstances as this. Cheers, kirk giordano Rendering
Yes, I saw that too. Maybe he did go back and get it, but another ten minutes and it would have been to significant a transition to float out. Floating the whole wall is ideal, but a good patch is nearly indistinguishable to everybody but a plasterer.

profound point that you stressed you had someone mixing for you. diy-ers get in trouble using rapidset while not having someone mixing for them. they get behind, don't get it smooth in time, and it sets too fast and hardens bumpy.

Quick question - I generally use wafer screws applying diamond mesh onto ICF block. What's your opinion on using air staples to attach the mesh instead. Of course it's faster and more efficient but will it hold over time? possibly do a video on ICF if possible Thanks, Brent
Howdy Breant, odd question, we don't use any metal wire over cinder blocks, bricks or concrete, at most we pressure wash dirt and grime off then apply a bonding agent and apply directly to these porous surfaces, the new stucco or render which adhere by suction. FYI, although we make applying Stucco or Plaster Render appear easy, it usually take about 10 to 15 years of hands on experience to understand how to apply Stucco/Plaster/Render properly. Type in stucco over cinder block to see how we do it here in the U.S. of course codes in different countries may contradict what i feel is adequate. Cheers, kirk giordano rendering

I've been watching many of your videos. Thanks for posting them. I have a question though. I want to do some patch work on my house and paint it afterwards. What stucco do I use for the patching? I bought a bag of QuikCrete scratch and brown. Is that correct or should I use something like Dab all purpose stucco patch? One layer or two? Many thanks Sir.
Evening Ford Dude, either product will work. There are more than 10 materials sold at the big hardware stores such as Home Depot and or lowes that will all work. The plastering materials yards, such as Westside Building Materials, have many more same days or one coat cement plaster, also. I'd recommend, Rapid Set Stucco, buy what you need such as 10 or 25-pound boxes, or bigger bags such as 55 to 94-pound bags, this cement plaster, needs no added sand, you just add water. Like all same-day cement plasters or one coat plasters, don't overmix! Why? Excellent question, Glad you asked If mixed over 5 minutes or more, this can cause the cement plasters when set to be weak or comprised of strength. How many coats? Until the new stucco is flush with the existing stucco, your duplicating. FYI, QuikCreat is also excellent for patchwork. I have not used Dab, so I can't comment. Hello Mr. Giordano, I have one question I thought you had to hard float using a hard rubber trowel for the one coat system to pack it and then give it texture with the green sponge, I believe I have seen you hard pack one coat stucco before, just wondering why you didn’t do it this time, just wondering.
Good evening Will, in this video I had to bring the sand out to match the existing, thus a sponge float was needed. A hard rubber float would have compacted the mud, it would not have matched the original finish.😉 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Im a stucco plaster in Florida. We use different wire lath then u used. I use a grinder and bevel the edges so I can run mesh tape over exceding stucco when I can't tie in old wire to new wire. Wondering if you'll have rapid set mortar there in California. Home depot sells it here. Great stuff. It will dry up in 5 minutes, but alot of times I'll just mix it with the stucco to help set it up faster when I have to build certain areas out. But I've been told the less stucco u put on a wall the better it is. What do u think about that? I've also worked with alot of different companies, and they always want different processes. When it comes to new construction. Is it better to run the mud sideways to prevent block lines. I would always run 1st coat sideways then 2nd up and down. Always seemed to work fine for me. But the company I work for now wants me to put both coats sideways. What is ur opinion on that. Great videos by the way. Keep up good work
Good evening Jason dude, and my fellow plasterer. All excellent questions. The issue with working for companies is, first on a positive side, 'job security,' but when they say jump, you have to say, 'how high boss.' or risk your job.🤔 I had a company tell me I had to use a 12 X 5 plastering trowel, although I was the fasted plasterer that the company ever hire. I told them to kick rocks and quit as I was tired of old men set in goofy ways that were most often part or rules they learned, which they could not part with.😏 As far as sideways or up and down on blocks walls nonsense as long as a half-inch or more is applied, the grout when it rains won't show, period.😉 To grind down or bevel the edges on existing or new stucco is foolish and a waste of time, and one of the most toxic things you can to your health and the homeowner's weather they live next door of five houses away. 🤷 When anyone grinds stucco or cement, they release in the air cut silica-sand" this goes into the lungs and is as bad as asbestos, plus this just is not necessary for the longevity of the work. Instead, clean the area well apply by brush or roller, Larsons, 'Weld-Crete' this bonding agent has been being sold in the professional plastering yards for over 40 years. There are reasons and a vast difference in quality between the stores, the homeowner's shop, and the professional plasterer's shop. Lastly, a person does not dictate the amount of stucco that is needed on a wall. 7/8 is required in the USA for all new homes. This rule is a hundred years old, or as the saying goes, 'etched in stone.' 🤔 As far as patch-work, you add the correct amount so that if a two by four or a rod is placed on the patch both ways, the stucco is furred out true, plumb, and level with the existing stucco. Hi Kirk - do you do work in Sacramento, or do you have somebody you could recommend? I have a fairly small job I think - a stucco wall that is leaking above a window. I need to find somebody to tear the stucco out and find the leak, fix the leak, and then match the existing stucco texture. I tried DIY, and got more mud on the ground than would stick to the wall. And to add insult to injury - it still leaks. Time for a pro.
Evening Tim, the best advise is for you to try the BBB or any other referral service in your area, get three bids and follow your gut feelings when choosing any contractor as some are tired, and don’t have much time in but need cash to put food on the table, thus say things he or she dose not intend to back up. Try to find someone knowledgeable, ambitious and qualified, if you talk with a few you will be able to distinguish who's right for you, sometimes it can be a full time job often to find qualified tradesmen. best wishes, kirk giordano plastering
I love the rapid set stuff, but man it dries quickly and makes it hard to clean up tools and buckets afterwards. Is there another one coat stucco product that you recommend? Or is rapid set the best? Thanks Kirk
Howdy Kane, next time buy some redardants to add to the rapid set, two bags is the max which will allow an hour to set instead of the 20 to 30 minutes, You may have to go to a professional plastering yards for the redardants. I am using Eisenwall another Rapid set product on this quick fix. Best wishes, Sound advice From your neighborhood stucco geeks same day Plastering

Good afternoon my friend. I applied the Dry-vit and Stow sitcom for three years back in the 80"s so yes, I can do that simple system. However, I don't have videos of how it's installed, as most high rises or buildings such as kaiser hospitals prefer this stucco system, so they don't have to apply too much weight to their building. Basically, the paper on the substrate the nail on styrofoam boards are usually 1-inch thick and dry-wit. They use heavy panzer mesh fiberglass netting at the bottom of the building for strength against chipping. Yes, the company was designed for Europe. I'm guessing around 1960, it came to the USA around 1970 to 1980? And yes, the fiberglass mesh tape system was named after the German panzer tank to emphasize strength, the normal fiberglass glass mesh netting for use for the rest of the building. We coated them with La Habra poly bond to embed "3-foot rolls" mesh netting into the raw foam board. Poly bond is a cementitious adhesive that is strong as hell. After the poly bond was applied, it was coated with a stucco finish color. The Stow system is slightly different after the boards are installed; a really thin stucco netting of 20 gauge netting is applied. It gets 1/4 inch of stucco once cure; it also gets a stucco finish. I did the gas station across the street called "hotel California" located in Oakland on San Pablow, about 27 years ago with the stow system.😉

Evening Drawing on everything dude,😉
Plastering is the main substrate in the whole world. It's far from dying.
In fact, it's the opposite. It can never die as it's necessary, and the absolute longest exterior siding is known on the planet. No other exterior wall systems can even come close to its strength and fireproofing abilities.
Stucco's longevity is also second to no other substrate.

The other day I was back plastering the mini basement I layed up and was wondering if you would of been proud of me lol... great job man...

Hi Kirk,
i have only recently become a real fan of your work an videos.

Kirk,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have very well built concrete 8" thick, 4' H retaining walls. The scratch coat was created by dragging a metal garden rake across when the forms were removed. Some say use metal lath, the scratch is at least 1/4" deep. Do I need lath? or just brown and finish. In Colorado 6k ft elev, the house has decades old perfect stucco on concrete board with lath.

Thanks for the tip,
The patch joint on both sides was clearly visible. the only sure way to hide the joint is to float the entire wall.
Howdy Dave, the video's are to show a bit of what we do, It's not necessary for me to achieve perfection to get the idea across to those interested.
However perfection is necessary for me to get paid, do you think I left it like that? I am unfortunately a perfectionist.
BTW, I don't agree with floating the whole wall in certain circumstances as this.
Cheers,
kirk giordano Rendering
Yes, I saw that too. Maybe he did go back and get it, but another ten minutes and it would have been to significant a transition to float out. Floating the whole wall is ideal, but a good patch is nearly indistinguishable to everybody but a plasterer.

Don't get me wrong I've done a lot of things around the house but most people wouldn't attempt but when it comes to something like this there's no substitute for experience
Exzackory. 💃
profound point that you stressed you had someone mixing for you. diy-ers get in trouble using rapidset while not having someone mixing for them. they get behind, don't get it smooth in time, and it sets too fast and hardens bumpy.
@@driger888 Exzackory, in all my years in I’ve learned it’s a cardinal sin to mix and plaster yourself. 😉
Question: Do I have to apply acrylic sticky to existing plaster? Thanks for your time and all these GREAT tutorials.

Quick question - I generally use wafer screws applying diamond mesh onto ICF block. What's your opinion on using air staples to attach the mesh instead. Of course it's faster and more efficient but will it hold over time? possibly do a video on ICF if possible
Thanks,
Brent
Cheers,

Howdy Kosha, I have no clue as to how to survive a hurricane, but as far as stucco depth, it's 7/8 of an inch.😉

I would recommend Sherwin Williams primer and paint for sealing all stucco and even wood, sure it cost close to three times as some stores.
However, it does what the can says and the longevity, in the long run, pays for itself.😉

A hard rubber float would have compacted the mud, it would not have matched the original finish.😉

I just mixed rapid set for first time. Harder than it looks, not as easy as stucco at all. Directions say 4:1 ratio, I went over by some, half a quart and it was way thicker than yours. What ratio do you use for rapid set?
Morning Lebron, Rapid set stucco is premixed you just add water.🤔
We used Rapid Sets Eisenwall cement stucco, this we did indeed add three times the sand to every one part Eisenwall. Note: eisenwall is only sold at plastering material years.

The issue with working for companies is, first on a positive side, 'job security,' but when they say jump, you have to say, 'how high boss.' or risk your job.🤔
I had a company tell me I had to use a 12 X 5 plastering trowel, although I was the fasted plasterer that the company ever hire.
I told them to kick rocks and quit as I was tired of old men set in goofy ways that were most often part or rules they learned, which they could not part with.😏
As far as sideways or up and down on blocks walls nonsense as long as a half-inch or more is applied, the grout when it rains won't show, period.😉
To grind down or bevel the edges on existing or new stucco is foolish and a waste of time, and one of the most toxic things you can to your health and the homeowner's weather they live next door of five houses away. 🤷
When anyone grinds stucco or cement, they release in the air cut silica-sand" this goes into the lungs and is as bad as asbestos, plus this just is not necessary for the longevity of the work.
This rule is a hundred years old, or as the saying goes, 'etched in stone.' 🤔
As far as patch-work, you add the correct amount so that if a two by four or a rod is placed on the patch both ways, the stucco is furred out true, plumb, and level with the existing stucco.
Any other questions, my friend?

Teaching how to repair your home
Try to find someone knowledgeable, ambitious and qualified, if you talk with a few you will be able to distinguish who's right for you, sometimes it can be a full time job often to find qualified tradesmen.
best wishes,
kirk giordano plastering
I love the rapid set stuff, but man it dries quickly and makes it hard to clean up tools and buckets afterwards. Is there another one coat stucco product that you recommend? Or is rapid set the best? Thanks Kirk
Howdy Kane, next time buy some redardants to add to the rapid set, two bags is the max which will allow an hour to set instead of the 20 to 30 minutes,
You may have to go to a professional plastering yards for the redardants.
I am using Eisenwall another Rapid set product on this quick fix.

Mastering Plastering tips and techniques
Thanks for another great video Kirk! One question, do you need a bonding agent for this type of stucco wall?

Do you know how to do EIFS Stucco???
I have a similar job needs to be done. How much did you charge for that patch?
