    Cool review! No mention of Exceed is criminal, since it's also a simultaneous reveal fighting card game.
    If we're talking combos, I still think Sakura Arms does it best. Combining two characters to make a deck makes pulling off crazy combos so much more exciting.

    Ouch, the hate for BattleCON and not even listing it in the end "if you don't like this try X" hurts. Sure it's a bit big with far too many pieces and can take a lot longer to play if you get bogged down thinking out your moves, but damn if it isn't a perfect re-creation of fighting games in every way and I absolutely love it. Might have to give this a look though, just to get something that might see a bit more play due to being shorter.

    Check out Yomi if you want a card game that follows fighting game mechanics and flow. If Combo Fighter is for people who fondly remember mashing buttons 20 years ago, Yomi is for people who stuck around and learned how to play.

    Great video! Sounds like it fits right into my favorite category of "generates a ton of exciting and/or hilarious moments condensed down to a small box, simple rules, and relatively short play time while still providing interesting player decisions." That's a long label for a category though so I hope we can figure out something a bit nicer.
    Also, there was a brief mention of variants for other player counts, but it wasn't really talked about in the video? I'm kind of curious about those, as I do love a good two player game, but in board games, flexibility is value!

    Eh, I think I'll stick with Sakura Arms by AEG for my one-on-one fighting card game, probably because I feel like it does a better job being more like a fighting game, complete with other concepts like spacing between fighters determining what moves can be used and super moves for when you've been getting hit too hard. It also has a bunch of fighters to choose from, but since you're building your deck with cards from two different fighters, the characters can feel really different and can help offset each others weaknesses or just double down on the same strength. As long as the artwork doesn't put you off (it's from their Big in Japan line so you know what to expect), it's a fun game that plays relatively quickly so you can get back in to try a new strategy.

    My group already plays Way of the Fighter, another fighting-game inspired board game from a few years ago that also has special moves, cards, combos, colorful characters from various backgrounds, etc. That game also lets you construct your own deck out of "technique packs" (sets of 8 (i think) cards themed around a certain fighting style), and it ramps up as the game progresses because you get more dice (used to partially determine which player's move gets priority in a blind bid) as you take damage. It's not as simple as this game, but if you're looking for a game like combo fighter but with more complex moves (WotF has a board and moves have specific hitboxes that means position matters) and a fun dice game attached, also maybe give Way of the Fighter a look before you buy Combo Fighter. Also, WOTF has a bunch of expansions, with new fighters and more technique packs... :D

    • @VirtualMarmalade
      @VirtualMarmalade 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But on the other hand, way of the fighter does maybe take a game or two to really internalize the rules, and there are a couple fiddly components you have to keep track of (I always forget the turn tracker lol)... And it's more expensive than combo fighter as well on account of all the dice, the board, the big ol' manual, and the cardboard standee pieces for each fighter...

      Depends on what you are looking for. Combo Fighter is Street Fighter/Tekken and Street Masters is Double Dragon/Final Fight/Streets of Rage. Pretty different genres

    Reminds me of Dice Throne. If anyone's played both, which do you prefer?

    • @joelface
      @joelface 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Dice Throne has more depth, more strategy, and is overall just a much better game.. but not because Combo Fighter is lacking in any way. I think if you like one you'll like the other, and you should own both since they play quite differently in the end (CF is simultaneous and focuses on combos while DT is turn-based and focuses on ... well, an array of fun ways to defeat your foe). In short.. if you like one, buy the other.. but I'm still coming back to DT pretty much every game night, and I don't think CF has those legs.

    With as much as you enjoy mystery games, might I recommend you check out Mystery Express? Its basic core is simple: loosely, it is Clue but with TWO cards for each suspect, location, motive, and modus operandi (4 categories instead of 3). In practice, the game becomes at its core highly seductive and logic-based, as now seeing a card is no longer a brainless “check it off the list” exercise.
    There are other differences too, like setting (train), time cards, and a time limit. At its core though, it is a game with a seemingly simple twist on a familiar theme that results in a radically more intensive (and satisfying) level of achievement for what the game’s genre sets out for players to do: seductive reasoning.
    (And phones apparently autocorrect deductive to seductive. What is the world coming to?! Seductive still works, keeping it!)

    I'll join the chorus and mention the real competition for this is Yomi and contrasting this to the reigning champion of in-depth fighting game card games probably would've made the review more complete. The first printing was 8 years old so it's not exactly well known.

    Good review! You guys are great! As a fighting game player, I have two big problems with this game (and a little teeny bit with the review):
    First: With a very few, very minor exceptions, there is NO RANDOMNESS IN FIGHTING GAMES. If you lose to someone button mashing, it's because you're bad. Period. Even a moderately skilled player, with a decent fundamental understanding of the game, can beat button mashing.
    Second: I'm concerned about the implications of using the deck as your health counter. Because this means that as you take damage, you are literally losing attacks. Part of the appeal of fighting games is that it's never over until you're dead. If you're at 1% health and your opponent is at 100% health you can ALWAYS come back to wipe the floor with them, entirely under your own ability (and again, without the benefit/detriment of luck). Can you do that if there are only twenty cards left in your deck? Ten? Five? This is a fine in a lot of games, but limiting your resources according to previous performance in the round is antithetical to the core of what fighting games are supposed to be about.
    The game looks fun, but that second part especially kinda makes me not want to buy it.

      You cannot KO yourself by using cards. You have to take a hit. Until you do, you reshuffle your deck and keep playing.

    • @ValkyrieTiara
      @ValkyrieTiara 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@asgerjohansen8466 Yes I figured but that's not the point. I'm saying if I only have five cards left in my deck, then I only have those five attacks to choose from for the rest of the game. Not only will my opponent know exactly what's in my hand every round, but I'll be extremely limited in what attacks I'll have and which combos I can play. Even at 10 or 15 cards in the deck, you could easily end up with, say, only one or two movement cards remaining, and have lost all copies of your most powerful/important cards, leaving you with a gimped and (worse) predictable deck for the last leg of the game. In game design we refer to this as "snowballing". In this instance it's a HUGE handicap, and something that would never EVER be tolerated in a fighting game.
