I think this will work better in eastern ks. It didn’t end up working all that well for me

Its not the number of species in the mix thats important, its the diversity of plant families. In your mix you have 5 species and they are all from different plant families (4 is recommended minimum according to Dr Christine Jones) so you should see excellent results from this diversity.

I’m curious what part of western Kansas you are in? I consider myself to be from western Kansas and I didn’t know anybody was using that kind of equipment. I just purchased a roller and plan to roll cereal rye this spring.

How do you think you could have improved your roller kill? More weight? Waiting longer?

Great video! Looking forward to see the wheat stand with this. Do you think there will be any issues with the drill getting through the canopy of everything laying down, such as going against or with the grain, or perpendicular to the direction you rolled the cover crops?

Why not drill then roll? I'd be worried about hair pinning rolling first.

I can’t count in it raining. So we are trying to preserve as much moisture as possible. Our annual precipitation is 16inches

@@youngredangus6041 I thought of that after I posted. You need to terminate now and protect the soil so you've got enough moisture to get the wheat started. ?
I'm guessing wheat planting for you is mid Sept?

Have you tried rolling sorghum sudan? My experience has been that you’ll get a lot more biomass in drier, hotter weather. Also when rolled/ flattened you get great ground cover and it doesn’t kill it. The plant will regrow and tiller.

    • @youngredangus6041

@@youngredangus6041 I’ve only had a need to do it once. I just drug a log behind the tractor. Did that on half of the field and bush hogged the other half. The “logged” half seemed to cover the ground much better and rebound quicker.
it was close to 2months old. Just getting ready to put seed heads on, basically when you can crimp the stem by hand. I got the idea when I saw my run-over paths for poly wire coming back and tillering as good as if they’d been grazed.
