The real reason is probably funnier. Bkub Okawa, the original manga author actually made up the fake romcom to show people that he could actually draw and was a real artist since the rest of the Pop Team Epic manga is just small 4 panel stories that look like simple memes and shitposts.

The opening gag legit made me think Netflix was malfunctioning or something, so I stopped watching. It took me two weeks of reclicking to realise it was actually part of the show.
Uhh it's not the animator that made anime story/plot. It's the writer of the story or the mangaka. In this case, it's the Pop Team Epic mangaka Edit: and also the director that direct how the animation will be.
I love how much effort went into that fake opening, it looks just as high quality as any other opening despite being nothing more than an elaborate shitpost. I adore this show.

I know that _Hoshiiro Girldrop_ is meant to be a running joke, but I am genuinely invested in Daichi and Sosogu’s budding romance. So much so that one of my ongoing mental fanfics is about the Drop Stars and Daichi making a last stand against Pipi P. and her army of Popu-chin clones from _Pop Team Epic_ S1E3.
The sheer amount of things this show parodies and the way they do it is so freaking funny!! I also just lust the stark contrast of anime girls with manly voices lol!!
What they did with this intro was genius, all the way up to the "next episode" bits. And then they did an insane thing _again_ for season 2. There's so much I love about Pop Team Epic; it's a pure celebration of animation.
I remember this clearly, because I was watching it on Toonami and did double take then the second part of the show replayed and my older sister walked out and asked what anime it was because it looked so cute then the rip came through and she then had a wait what moment and laughing.
