Me and my family used OS 9 up until 2006, we got alot of use out of OS 9 despite it being outdated. I have alot of fond memories also, playing bugdom, playing flash games every friday night. OS 9 is still one of my favorite Operating Systems, its also interesting how the old Mac OS setup process worked.
Everyone knows that the only reason to use Internet Explorer is to download a browser you actually want to use. I used Safari for the same reason. LOL :)
Just try the macintosh garden. Almost every Mac OS version is available there in almost every language. And so much good old software. I even found a german OS 8.5 I then installed on my Performa 5200.

Good one. Holding down the C key to boot from the optical drive. C, as in “CD-ROM?” Anyway, cute video. I’ve never seen a Mac OS installation before. Thanks, man!
The website I would recommend for download ing older operating systems is WinWorld PC. I downloaded mac os 9.2.1 from it as well as multiple versions of windows and os x 10.2 from this website, and it works.
If you got the restore disk set for your Mac up to the G4 MDD model that could boot MacOS 9 natively, you should be able to find the MacOS 9 DMG (ISO) file inside a hidden .images folder on the recovery disk. A period before a folder name makes the folder invisible in Finder, so you must use either the Go to folder command in Finder or Terminal.
Hi, Thanks for every Clips... and I wonder How could you build up AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) network? I have a TimeCasule of Apple 2TB, and Can I make a file server for my OLD MACS(Mac OS 8 and 9 etc)?? Thank you!!
I experienced classilla when I ran OS 9 on my Clamshell. Meanwhile I replaced it by Mac OS X 10.1.x and I plan to add memory and an AirPort card to maybe run Mac OS X 10.3.9.
I'm sure this install tutorial applies to anything with PowerPC prior to the iMac/iBook, as well, i.e. the Power Macintosh 5xxx Series (5500/225 owner here). Although the CD-ROM drive on mine is jammed, and looking to find out how to repair that situation. I mean, it acts like it wants to open, but I think it butts up against the cavity. Seems there might be a way to reseat it, but I'm not sure that I'm comfortable opening up an All-in-One PPC Mac, though.

I also have a couple of iBook Clamshell's that I wish to restore to OS 9. Do you know if install discs were hardware specific "back then" as they are nowadays? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Ben

My good man, did you know the Mac Classic had an OS on a ROM chip on the motherboard? With the right key combination you can boot it without a hard drive or floppy disc. If you have one lying around, give it a try!
If you have a modern Mac, LiquidCD is a good utility to burn .iso files to CD. However last I tried some of them won't always boot (like 7.6), so be ready for something like that.
I know this is a super late response and probably no longer relevant, but just in case; are you using CD-RWs? I know the iMac G3 Tray Load cannot read CD-RW discs, so it might well be the same for an clamshell iBook. A regular CD-R should work, although if your drive is starting to fail it may refuse to read them while reading commercially pressed CDs fine.
Those that want to torrent these old OS'... 1. Pirate Bay (the site) 2. uTorrent (Torrent software) 3. Daemon Tools (mounting software) 4. ImgBurn (burning software) Or... Does the, C key launch the computer in the software that is on the disc? Example: If I have os 10, and that's the only software I have installed, if I hold down C, it will boot up into os 9? And if you take out the disc, or you do not hold down C, it will boot into os 10?
