My God, what an inspirational story... That absolutely gave me goose bumps. As a life long Richmond member it gives you such pride that they not only had the courage to give such a great guy the opportunity to redeem himself but had the strength to stand by him. To Marlion's credit he took the chance and now look where he is. An absolute icon of the community and proof that there is hope for everyone. I wish him and his great family every success and health. Thanks to the Australian Story for producing a piece that uplifts the spirit of anyone who watches. In times like these it's great to see such heartfelt, real content.
This is the greatest story ever about someone who's played one AFL game, lets hope at going on 28 years old he can make it 100 games almost as good and make it an all time great story.
Shows footy is just so much more than a game, it’s the glue that binds us all together regardless of race, background, etc etc. As a long time Tiger member (3121) I am just so proud of my footy club for making a difference. The selection of Marlion in the 2019 Premiership Team must go down as one of the most courageous selections ever, is one thing talking the talk, but walking the walk is what Dimma and his colleagues did. They had he courage of their convictions on the big stage with the most to lose. Brilliant stuff!!!! And I love my footy club💛🖤
i read somewhere that happiness is the joy you feel moving towards your potential.. and i've never felt that quote move me more then it has while i was watching his transition from the start to the finish of this, what a beautiful story.
I’m still salty as a cats supporter but loved that someone took an opportunity on this guy great moment for him 2 Premierships in 7 days great effort and good on him for turning his life around wish Pickett all the best
The Australian Story was absolutely brilliant. Such a human interest story. Not just for the Richmond Football Club but also as a life experience. Marlon I hope is proud of his efforts! But hey, Damian Hardwick who championed Marlon’s inclusion into the greatest day for AFL.! Marlon’s story deserves to be championed and championed well...
What a great story. So wonderful to see a young man take control of his life and turn it around. To the 27 people who thumbed down so far may you find peace and happiness in your own lives, I feel really sorry for you.
Beautiful story about a naturally talented man. I'm so glad he's found the right path. Wishing him and his gorgeous wee family a very happy and bright future ❤️❤️ love from Ireland ❤️💐
This is the best redemption story ever Marlion and his family must have had a lot of struggles and for him to never give up and his awesome wife standing bye him and supporting him through this journey is outstanding what a beautiful and inspiring story
Richmond should be congratulated for taking a risk with Ben Cousins and Marlion Pickett where all other clubs ran a mile....and I’m NOT a Richmond supporter
@@lonewolf6364 It's not about if it works. It's about giving people a chance. Remembering that drug addiction is mental health we should always give people with mental health a second chance... or a first chance. I was a patient at the same hospital as Ben Cousins when I had depression, but not at the same time. While there the media caught wind that Ben Cousins might be trying rehab again there were 30+ reporters at the front of the hospital waiting.. .just in case. No hope of recovery with that. Not saying that Cousins is the ideal candidate for giving a second chance, if there are limited spots, but it's good that they did. Even if it didn't end with a feel good story. The world isn't feel good stories.
Adrian Julz firstly I appreciate you taking the time to respond in a decent and respectful manner. Secondly I hope you are doing well these days and have found a way to beat the "black dog" and manage the roller coaster of emotions and feelings that is depression. However, I disagree with one thing. Illict substance abuse, may cause mental health issues as a result of such abuse, but is not a mental health issue initially. - which is how I read your response about Ben using amphet and cocaine. He gave himself the mental health issues by virtue of using a large amount of illicit substances. That is entirely different that someone who has depression or a mental health issue due to a traumatic event or a chemical imbalance in the brain (such as alrered seratonin levels). Equally as devastating yes, but he entirely brough that on himself, due to poor life choices.
Mark Ferrari re read what I wrote mate. I stated the direct correlation to mental health, in his instance was self administering illicit substances, versus someone who has experienced a traumatic event/born with lower seratonin levels, etc. My direct point being, whilst I agree the MH issues are terrible, he entirely did that to himself with horrendous poor life choices and illicit subsance abuse. I just wish those with MH issues that are not brought on by such life choices, had the same access and same level of support and "chances" he received..

And they say, ‘Footy is just a game’. It keeps people alive. It’s drives people to work hard and learn how to function within a team. He has 50 new brothers when signing for the Tiges and that’s because footy was there to rescue him
The people who gave the thumbs down need to have a good hard look at themselves, this man is not only an inspiration to his people but to everyone. Never judge a book by its cover because the story inside is where we find who people really are.
Everybody needs a second chance and I'm so glad that Richmond took chance on this young man 💞 I'll keep this beautiful family 👪 in my prayers 🙏 daily and God Bless them 💖
Good on him for turning it around. Been there and (not quite that well) done it. It's harder to get out of that life than to stay in it. Unless you've grown up with it, it's hard to fathom but believe me he has been a real life superman. I'm not indigenous and therefore had less everyday hardships, so I truly admire the boy!!! Afl aside, it still would be inspirational!
Loved this story Aussies. Marlion and Jess's love and commitment to each other and their family was the driving force of his personal redemption, allowing him to use his talents to soar. Praise to those who saw his potential.
What a great story it just shows that there are good and bad in all of us it's up to us to decide who we want to be and what we want to stand for congrats to him and his wife for never giving up and I'm proud of my footy club for having the courage to play him in the biggest game of the year
He's done well to turn his life around. But at this stage, all he's done is stop committing crimes and played very well in one AFL game, granted it was a Grand Final. Not much to make a movie about just yet.
I bet the other clubs that snubbed him looked and saw his performance on GF day must’ve been pinching themselves so hard of how spectacular Marlon was on the field. I’ve been a Richmond supporter since I went to my first AFL game in 1996? When Boomer Harvey debuted, I was 13 then & since then I hoped we would win a GF & I’ve waited 20yrs until 2017 & I cried. 2018 season was horrible but 2019 couldn’t have come any sweater. We had setbacks but we managed and bringing Marlon on board the 22 train was a gutsy move by our selectors and it paid off. Marlon’s a quiet super star, silent assassin if you will on the field. He gave us the boast we need to win our 2nd in 3 yrs. love yah mate, 2020 let’s get it going!
Marlion & Jess congratulations you are inspirational people. Richmond congratulations on giving this gifted athlete a chance. How many other people are there out there that have had a challenging past and just need another chance?.
It's not about being given a chance. Chances come around for everyone all the time. It's about being prepared for them and seeing them when they present.
Very true, and a good point. However it is also about recognizing those choices and actually making the right decision when those ‘chances’ are presented. Thanks for your input.
Great story, great player! Please let this be a message that we need to treat prisoners like who they are, humans. Marlion got the label of a thief and a thug, but he was just trying to make money for his family. Then he rehabilitated and became a success. Let’s respect all people, even the ones in Jail.
That's a load of crap to say he was just trying to make money for his family. Aboriginals get more hand-outs than anyone. If he needed help, it was there. He just wanted the quickest way to get cash. He's done very well to get himself on the right track, but his criminal past is completely on him.
