Had the privilege of visiting there in 2000. Understandably the French reclaimed most of the area but left Pointe-du-Hoc as it was. Those craters are left from June 6, 1944, created from bombs and naval gunfire. Those aren't rocks - they're chunks of concrete that were thrown from exploding bunkers, some hundreds of feet away. For those who understand what happened there, the experience is a combination of awe inspiring, intimidating and surreal. Great video, thanks for posting it!
Believe those craters were from years of bombing. The Germans actually removed the old French guns from the open mounts due to the bombardment and replaced them with telephone poles to serve as a diversion. The old French guns had been moved just a bit inland and hidden in the trees. They were found by a patrol and destroyed. There is only 1 covered gun mount but there was never a gun mounted there. A large number of the Germans were off staying in town overnight where they attended a birthday party never expecting the invasion to happen in the lousy weather.

I remember I was thinking jeez, these pits.. they must have been much deeper in 1944.. can you imagine the impact of the bombardments... And I also remember me running scared like a chicken when I entered one of these collapsed bunkers and a big group of birds flew out of it because they heard me. It was really dark in the bunker. The real men existed in the 40's nowadays we all tame rabbits including myself lol.

Did you need special permission to operate a drone over Pointe du Hoc? The shots at the cemetery were, obviously, taken before it opened to the public. Early morning is the best time to visit. In 2011, I was privileged to be alone there for almost an hour between 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thank you for an incredible video.
I listened to a gentleman in a wheelchair, at the 65th anniversary of D-Day, at Bedford, Virginia in 2009. He was waiting at a shuttle bus pickup point when three young boys came up and thanked him for his service. His wife said, "Carl, do you have a story you might could tell the boys"? And I listened to an ancient Ranger softly tell of the event. How the guns were gone, but found. He passed away a few months later. RIP Carl Price, Roanoke, Virginia.

When those drone shots were taken there must not have been birds. I was recently at Pointe Du Hoc and on our Mavic Air 2 the big birds kept attacking the drone. I couldn’t film anything instead continue to conduct evasive maneuvers in sports mode to avoid the drone from getting knocked off and perhaps just falling off the cliff and loosing the drone. I feel so bad this happened to me because I wanted to get some great footage such as this one even in 4K. Does one of you know if the birds flying and protecting Pointe du Hoc stay in the area depending on season? They must have thought our drone was a rival bird and decided to attack it.
I visited pointe du how a few years ago and it was so impressive that me and my family were just speechless and is also stood in one of the many many craters there and me and my brother had trouble to climb out of them that is how deep they were and while I visited Normandy we visited all the beaches and it was so impressive it is strange to imagine that thousands of soldiers fought there for our freedom we should never forget these men and women that fought for us 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Edit: I could not find all the flags of the country's that were there

Yes the cliffs were that high, troops had to climb up to the top while getting shot at to destroy guns that were supposed to be there. The germans had moved the guns before the D-Day invasion started but US troops found where the massive guns has been moved

Your right it's nothing like a video game. Was there in 1995 .to see where two of my uncles died and my grandfather survived as 1 of the few medics to be the first to land and survive. I served in the United states army special forces from 1973 to 2000 .served in Vietnam, desert storm and Iraq. Have a lot of respect for those who served in ww2 .still the bravest and greatest generation in history. I salute all vets .🇺🇸 👍 remember all vets past, present and future .all gave some ,some gave all .and remember most of all FREEDOM IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN FREE 😷🇺🇸👍

About 150 Allied soldiers died or were wounded, 50 Axis soldiers died.
