      The fact that she managed to hold for so long against 7-9 men whom, though not intent on fighting her, were there to surround and subdue her just shows her proficiency with the Naginata. And, on another level, I am happy it did not become this “girl-power overcoming all these men” moment. But was used to broadcast what every other samurai retainer felt but could not voice out themselves.

    I think.. Blackthorne, in compromise and affection to mariko as a protestant , would rather willingly add the sin of murder on his soul by becoming Lady Mariko's 2nd. in the hopes that at least, her eternal Christian soul can ascend to heaven upon her death. This is why he says ... I quote : " I will do it. Hell is no place I haven't already known. " This episode was great !

      Yes. I'm surprised they didn't understand this. In that era especially, for Christians, suicide is irredeemable. She couldn't be consecrated or buried on consecrated ground. Blackthorne takes the sin of killing so that she knows that can at least die with both her nobility and Faith intact.

      @@greg.peepeeface It makes sense even without knowing Ochiba's literal meaning.
      You can interpret that life is beautiful because it ends. And a big theme wiht her character is accepting death and letting it go at the moment. She is telling Ochiba's that dying is not something that diminish the beauty of life and the power of her actions, on the contrary it carry more meaning because mortality (falling flower).
      It's not even that complicated. That second layer of meaning for Ochiba's name is just more subtext but not necessary.

      Hosokawa Gracia's death poem
      散りぬべき 時知りてこそ 世の中の 花も花なれ 人も人なれ
      Flowers truly become flowers, and people truly become people, because they know when to fall
      that's her death poem ... and the hidden meaning is to be your true self (real beauty) while realizing a death ( well, people who are close to death, flowers fade nearly fall were not outer beauty )
      in my opinion - Mariko also sees through Ochiba, even if she acts differently, cruel, trickery, sarcastic
      but Mariko has known her since childhood and she still is Lady Ruri who was once gentle and caring to each other in the past
      that's a bit of advice from friend to friend as a reminder, maybe she wants to say "Stop pretending, you're a better person than this "

      @@Afreshio I meant from the origin of the poem because a Japanese meaning can have several different meanings, so I was confused by the translation. Like 花 means nose and flower, so to say flowers are only flowers because they fall, I’m like WTF because that’s not why they are called hana or flowers because they fall (aki, ochiru, or ??).

    Anna Sawai had better win an emmy for this!! And I applaud the writers as well for having written such a beautifully tragic character. One of the greatest tragic characters I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
    Mariko very rarely got to experience true happiness. Seeing her family put to death, being forced to marry such a brute, couldn't even enjoy the happiness of being a mother without her husband ruining it. And when she does feel like she can finally take some agency over her life and experience the beauty of life...happiness, love, joy...her husband returns and ruins it all. I appreciate that they didn't continue with the romance like the previous series & book. It just added to the tragedy even more.
    I had wanted to see Blackthorne beg Mariko and he literally did. And for her to comfort him while also explaining that she must serve a cause greater than her desires. It wasn't exactly what I had imagined, but I suppose in honor of making everything true as possible to 1600's history it was enough. And I'm glad that Mariko did have a moment of taking agency and allowing herself to experience more true love before her inevitable fate.
    And Anna did such a beautiful & powerful job with it. Mariko is NOT an easy character to portray. Having to be a strong 1600's Japanese woman is almost an impossible task to act. She's not given the benefit of Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga of sitting in a "power stance" and emoting like he did while watching his friend commit seppuku. Anna has to be EXTREMELY subtle with it. And when they finally gave her scenes to be emotional in, she broke my heart. Tearing up after her talk with her son. The little emotional lip quiver after the talk with Lady Ochiba. The look she gave Blackthorne as he got ready to be her second.
    My god, I wish I could just have 5 minutes of Anna's time to express how amazing I found her to be in this series....

      @@jimmygreer2140 This show is waaaay above GoT. GoT even got some elements from Shogun's novel.
      Yeah they kinda neutered Blackthorne's character for the sake of liberal bias, but otherwise the writing is top shelf.
      GoT fell to hell after season 4 and culminated in becoming a bad joke of a show in the last season. There's no comparison.
      Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul is a comparable example of great writing. Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Night Of, True Detective S1 and The Wire are other hall of fame examples in masterpieces in screenwriting.

      @@Afreshio Nah, no way does the storytelling come close to GOT. A lot of the other stuff about film making puts it on GOT's level but the story-telling not so much. The costume & set designs are much superior to GOT. The acting is pretty on par. The sound design is better, the soundtrack is on par with the first few seasons of GOT but then GOT stomps them later.
      But the storytelling of GOT has so much more depth and immersive. I mean there's an entire genre of TH-cam dedicated to GOT theories and conspiracies. How things from Season/Book 1 come into play in Season 6 & Book 5. It makes GOT more rewatchable. Like when they confirmed R+L=J I went back and watched Season 1 just to see how Sean Bean played that part.
      But what should I expect from an anti-woke media illiterate like yourself? Probably one of those who were surprised to find out Rage Against the Machine was extremely leftist.
      I'm even reading the novel and GRRM smokes Clavell. Nothing wrong with Shogun but nothing really special about it either yet. Though I will say his POV switches are rather clunky. To go straight from Blackthorne wondering how such a tiny old man got the better of him to Mura thinking how he's gonna teach the pretend Christian some manners within the same page does lose some of the immersion having to switch from a Western POV mindset to an Eastern one.
      But still, Shogun did an exceptional job with Mariko being a tragic character. I just wish they had been able to make everything about Episode 8 & 9 hit a little harder. I got choked up with Hiromatsu and my eyes got wet over Mariko. But if they had done it just a little better they could've broke me like the Red Wedding or Hold the Door had done to me...just sobbing through the credits.

    This show is absolutely fantastic. Its attention to detail is remarkable, with a rich tapestry of historical authenticity that makes it feel like a sumptuous feast every week. While there are a few cosmetic choices for the characters, they don't detract from the overall authenticity. It's akin to indulging in a delicious teishoku, never knowing what delightful surprises each episode will bring.
    The acting is stellar, with every character fitting their role perfectly. I often find myself compelled to explore the previous works of the cast. What's particularly impressive is how Anjin is a central figure without overshadowing the ensemble cast. And Hiroyuki Sanada's performance is nothing short of extraordinary, reaffirming his status as an A-list actor.
    It's also intriguing how this show, primarily tailored for a Western audience, incorporates subtitles throughout. As someone who already harbors a deep love for Japan, having lived here for over a decade, this series has only deepened my affection for the country.
    Undoubtedly, I'll revisit this masterpiece in the years to come.

    Perfection. Crimson Herring.
    God I loved the scene between Ochiba and Mariko, my heart broke knowing Ochiba still does care for her and does not simply resent her for being Aketchi Jinsai’s daughter.😭😭😭😭And thankfully, Blackthorne finally does the right thing and decides to second Mariko. But this death would totally sour Ishido in the eyes of the other Lords, Nobles, and Samurai in Osaka.

    • @nzaud
      @nzaud 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It was quite a beautiful scene but left me wanting more. I honestly thought Ochiba, as mother of the heir, was going to have some positive influence over Mariko's fate. In the stroke death scene earlier, she was told to stop playing games and release the hostages, yet did not. You cd argue that she influenced Ishido to grant permits, but for him to bring in the shinoji to slaughter them and cause Mariko's death (which truly devastated me) can't be explained away. So many reasons to shout at the TV tonight! :(

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nzaud unfortunately, she feels like she has that much power ONLY IF she plays her role correctly, this is why she accepts the engagement after Daiyoin died of the stroke. Her only power is as the Heir’s mother, but once Toranaga dies, that power and importance also dies. She wants to live no matter what, and that’s also why she was begging Mariko to stop her plan as it throws a wrench on her own plans and may create a path to actual hostilities with an uncertain outcome.

    • @Afreshio
      @Afreshio 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nzaud The Shinobi didn't want to kill Mariko they just wanted to capture her and maker her a hostage. Ishido's not stupid enough to kill Mariko when he just prevented her from commiting suicide. Killing her later would ignite the same flames among the other nobles all the same.
      Capturing her was the plan. He didn't count on her sacrificing herself. He understimated her willpower. He even mocked her as he gave her the permit to leave by declaring she was just simulating a seppukku ceremony.

    • @Afreshio
      @Afreshio 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I also don't think Ochiba was that involved with Mariko. She was ultimately fighting for her son as she said to her.
      What I thought was a LOW blow was bringing up Mariko's only child. Ochiba knows they have a estranged realtionship, Ochiba knows Mariko's son is a hostage in Kiyama's quarters, Ochiba knows Mariko is prioritizing vengeance over everything else, including her son. She emphasized "YOUR son" mocking the fact that her son was influenced by Kiyama to reject her mother if she kept insisting on carrying on her/Toranaga's plan.
      It was a low blow, Mariko felt that and she quickly said to Blackthorne that is that to leave.

    Blackthorn'd second her for a simple reason, to end her suffering before the pain of seppeku would overcome her. Remember, that is the whole point of a second. The person performing seppeku stabs themselves in the abdomen and cuts across and through the intestines and organs if male or through the throat if female. Ideally the person shows no pain and expires stoicly never acknowledging the pain. However, obviously, a gut wound or throat wound is excruciatingly painful, and enduring that sort of pain will exceed many peoples ability to endure , and that is where the second comes in. They are there to kill the person with a clean stroke to ensure they feel as little pain as possible and to preserve their face by killing them before they show their agony. So backthorn would do it to honor her desire to perform her duty (because he knows nothing he can say will way her resolve)and also to take away her pain if she carries it out.

      He doesn't need to be a master in the use of katana to finish her quickly. He has killed before even if with only guns so he will not second guess. He is a strong heavy and tall man so his blow is gonna be quick and strong. The point is that she needed morale and he gave her by committing with her. She also doesn't need perfection, but at least a way to avoid suicide as she is a Christian. Blackthorne's offer gave her that.

    You know, I'm not the type to comment much. I can count on one hand how many comments I've made on social media so far. I watched this series, and since then, I feel compelled to share my thoughts, and I've lost count of how many places I've commented on the topic, so I'm sure I'll repeat myself. The 9th episode was the peak of the show in my opinion. The whole episode was fantastic, and of course, the entire series has been a masterpiece from the first episode. Sets, acting performances, every detail meticulously crafted. However, the 9th episode takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, shaking your soul, and at the end, you feel like you need therapy. I knew Mariko would die, I know the book and the series made in the 80s, and I knew the story of the historical figure that inspired the character of Mariko, and yet it still hit me hard when I saw it happen. Mariko's death was inevitable. That was her fate. It had to happen for a greater purpose. Mariko is one of the most beautifully written characters I've seen so far. Portraying her is no small feat. I didn't know Anna Sawai before. I've never seen any of her work before. What she accomplished as Mariko is one of the greatest performances I've seen. Playing such a complex character with such detailed acting, with such meticulously crafted nonverbal communication, can only be done with very serious skills. Obviously, I don't know the actress, but I'm sure her real personality is far from Mariko's personality, even considering historical contexts, and this further enhances the value of her performance. The fact that a 21st-century modern young woman embodies a 16th-century Japanese noblewoman with such authenticity, intelligence, and astonishing detail that you forget you're not watching a real character is more than noteworthy. Thanks to Anna's performance, you completely believe that you're seeing Mariko. You feel her pain, her struggle, and when you face her death, you literally start mourning. These feelings can only be elicited by outstanding actors with outstanding performances. Let's quickly add that she does all of this in English and the appropriate Japanese language for the era. Her portrayal was utterly authentic.
    Anna and Mariko is an excellent example of when a heartbreaking story meets a strong and beautiful character and an actress worthy of it. It rarely happens this perfect way in movie history. Let's add that the performances of the other actors were excellent as well. Cosmo Jarvis, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano all delivered their characters brilliantly, but Anna stood out even among these excellent performances. Hats off and Emmy on to her.

    In the mid-17th century, Spain had hegemony in Europe. Philip II, whose territories included Christianity and Portugal, controlled the world's maritime trade with a powerful armada.
    And he was trying to conquer China (Ming Dynasty) by using Japan's military power, which had succeeded in domestically producing guns. The method of increasing the number of Christian feudal lords through Christian missionary work, increasing their political power, and controlling them as territories was a specialty of Spain's world conquest strategy.
    At that time, Japan's silver output exceeded 1/3 of the world's trading volume, and the Netherlands, which became independent from Spain, established the East India Company and exported cannons and gunpowder to export Japanese silver. It was successful. By teaching Ieyasu about Spain's conspiracy and driving out Christianity and Spain, only the Netherlands, which pursued only profit, continued to trade with Japan even during the Edo period of national isolation.

Either way it would have been very interesting foreshadowing. .,.. Especially since he stood as her second, it would have given him understanding, also being a Christian even if not a Catholic he'd know what a mortal sin suicide is. In the book Yabi (as well as the first movie ) steps in when Lord Kiyama flakes. It was beautiful what he did.
