Thank you gentlemen for doing this interview. Mr. Salazar, I was impressed with the work you did on preparing your book and the candidness you portray in this interview. I finished a college research paper for my Texas History class in Spring 2021, about the time this interview was recorded. so I never got to see this until now. It was my History term paper for the semester. I had never heard of the 1917 riots so I was immediately curious. The research I did was long and difficult to put my essay together. Like you said the information is scarce and to find anything one has to go diffing into archives. But I came out with a 25-page story of the background of the Buffalo Soldiers, the insecurities and emotions the soldiers were living with leading up to the riot, the court case, and the executions. I was saddened and heartbroken by the whole event and believe it should never have happened and would not have had the white commanding officers been more sensitive to the Buffalo soldiers' requests to not be stationed in Houston. They were content to stay on the plains fighting the Indians, bandits, and Mexicans. Plus stories were in print at the time of all the lynchings and killings of blacks civilians and black soldiers in the Jim Crowe culture in Texas. So they already had great apprehension about being sent to Houston. The who situation could have been prevented and the trial was a farce - totally biased and filled with racial prejudice. I appreciate your work, Mr. Salazar. Thank you again for writing this book and sharing your knowledge with us.
Well done on the paper, and thanks for the comments on a complex story. Lots of different angles to approach the situation. The book was difficult but a labor of live. Glad you enjoyed it--audio version is out now, as well.
I'm the ancestor of Seargent William C Nesbit Mr. Salazar I believe a next project for you would be to get with the ancestors of these men and tell some stories of the individual men of the 24th and you can start with me if you like, I have a wonderful story of the family that William Nesbit descended from that is truly amazing and is in quite contrast too what happened that night. three descendants are meeting this Tuesday at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas. there are attempts being pursued to pardon these men. I would love a signed copy of your book Sir.
Thanks for the kind comments! Lots of ancestors of the men are coming out and making their voices heard. It was an honor to contribute to the story. Email me your details and I'll send a book.
Tom, thanks so much for having me on your show. It was a privilege and an honor, and your staff did a bang up job!

Story was well told and interview was interesting for multiple reasons highlighting similarities of the past and similar events since then.
Much appreciated!
My Great Grandfather MH Broyles tried to represent some of the soldiers but was told it was a military matter.
If you find blame to lay at the feet of those soldiers, then you have included your own biases.
