I was just given my grandmas 91 pickup and it is in immaculate condition, my grandma only used it to move wood around as she was a woodworker, everything’s original, under 70k miles, and it’s really just a super cool truck
my dad bought a 1990 toyota pick up 22re., new from the dealer. I still drive it today as a daily driver and I don't have to worry if my car will start in the morning for work.and I work construction.so it has it's hauling days.
i got a 2000 tacoma handed down from my dad. i know what u mean... they are timeless and last forever... they are tanks. they have soul. theres this calm feeling i get while driving. so enjoyable
It’s all preference of course. I enjoy blueprinting a 22R type powerplant. You could go high performance Carb or even 22RTE for real performance. That low end torque from the swirl induced 2 valve design is real pleasant off-road. Of course building engines should be done as a hobby since it costs money. Other reasons to not go tacoma is that the quality of components seemed to lessen as the switched production to North America in ‘95. Tacoma Still fantastic trucks but the 85 95 has a lot going for it. BTW V6 is not the best engine configuration. Inline 6 is superior ( bmw always prefered I6 over V6 ) But on the little trucks inline 4 is great especially if you can squeeze a little more torque with intelligent upgrades.
I just bought one with a fibreglass Rally kit. It was the pace truck for a dirt jump track a few years ago. So stoked as it’s my first truck after owning 9 sports cars.
Awesome to see this review. While not informative it was nice to see a 1991 in this condition. I, too, have a '91 and love it...had to do the 3.4 swap due to the head gasket issues. Long live Yota.
I owned the same model but a 22re extended cab and it was a dream. So clean and never gave you any hassle when taken care of. Lost old girl to a fire. Still looking for a replacement but it will never be the same. Such beautiful and fun little trucks. Great review! You've gained a new subscriber.
such a contrast between engines that came in these 80s and 90s pickups. The 4 cylinder 22RE was legendary and made Toyota's reputation for reliability and then you had the 3.0 V6 which barely any faster and became known as one of the worst engines Toyota ever made.
Very nice truck, my friend had one exactly like this, and bought it new. The early 90's mini trucks were the best, they just don't make small pickups like that anymore.
I had a '91. Also had the head gasket issue. It was a recall, so I had Toyota put in a new motor for just the labor cost. It was around $800. Man I miss that truck. You don't know what you have until it's gone
FYI IFS first came out in 1986 and with the IFS it LOST some off road capabilities, less articulation (flex) in the front suspension. But does have a smoother on road ride.
Something about a light body very sturdy body on frame that rides very well, drives straight and you can beat the crap out of is amazing...so simple, so practical. Like a streamlined jeep that is as good of f road as it is on without going into all the jeep type modifications that are done (ie oversized tires and lift kits, sway bars and Danas). the engine is also very good, perfect even. It's like the closest thing to a bike, you are the truck when you drive it. You can go anywhere and be ok...
My god! I bet that truck would sell for between 10k-13k on bring a trailer.com. That is the wanted ( top tier ) Model as far as those trucks go. If I were your friend, I'd put it in a car condom, oil undercoat it and store it in a barn so he can retire a rich man. One that clean is RARE! When we are in our 70's, those will be nonexistent due to how long people drove them and how mother nature ate them AKA Rust. My brother and I each have one. Both regular cab's with the 22re 5 spd. My brother FULLY redid his and after doing a ton of work, he painted it himself. It came out OK but the midnight metallic blue paint looks kind of shabby. Still, he has been offered 7 grand for his. He loves it so much and after taking a full summer to pull the cab/bed, remove all the rust on the frame/patch a few small rot spots on it, sand the entire bed and cab down to make it rust free then paint the entire frame with POR15 rustproof paint/ paint the entire body, instead of letting it go for a great profit, he plans on keeping it and putting a million miles on it's original engine. He's already at 384,000! Before very winter, he puts a thick coat of fluid film on it and after 4 years of doing that, he has a 1/4 inch of grease which covers the entire underside of the truck. It will NEVER rust out! His next and final step is to take it to a professional paint shop, bite the bullet and just pay someone to put a showroom quality coat of paint on it. At that point, it would look exactly like the one in your video! I am gong to send him a link to this vid and try to get him to go for this same color to be honest. He even found a set of the V6 alloy rims like that truck has so it would be a replica besides it being a 4cyl. My Yota is a 94' single cab that is flat black (covering a really beat up body) with a plow setup on it. I only drive it in the winter to plow and it starts on the worst of nights and pushes as much snow as most full size pickups do. I garage it all summer and also undercoat it every year to keep it from letting the cancer take over. Sometime in the next few years, I will take a summer and pull the cab/bed off and do what my brother did with his. I'm going to have to go with the white color and after seeing this video, I'm going to start sourcing the original Toyota graphics. We both agree that these trucks will never get sold. We will both be 70 year old grandpa's around 2050, tooling around the mountains of southern Vermont in our 60 year old Toyota pickups. I cant wait to see how many miles each truck has on it by then! Actually, this has inspired me to make a video of both our trucks! Thanks for the upload man!
Nice truck, but you have it backwards on the IFS (Independent Front Suspension). The solid front axle in '95 my Land Cruiser is more capable and vastly more durable. They went to IFS to improve on highway ride.
And it pisses me off to no end to hear some youngster (by my standards) call one of these old Toyotas a "Tacoma". Its not a god damn Tacoma, its just a Toyota pickup.
The 3.0 v6 gasket was not an engine issue, it's a gasket issue. The 88-89 had the best head gaskets a long with 1995s. In late 1989 the US banned asbestos material which was found in the good 88-89 gaskets. A quick change up went to weaker gaskets in 90-94s but even then it was usually only the heavier 4Runners with automatics and gearing for the little 225 tires and someone replaced with larger 31" + etc that ever caused an issue. If you have a pickup v6 manual and didn't tow then even with the bad head gaskets you'll likely never have an issue. I much prefer the 3.0 over the 22re! That 115hp will have you sticking your leg out up hills, no thanks. Also IFS came in 1986 to them not 1985 and the solid axle is a much better performer off road. You have that backwards. Enjoyed the video though 🍻
I think Toyota probably went with calling it the "Pickup" or "4x4" just so that when they were first starting off people knew what it was. If somebody said a Toyota Hilux to an American they might think of another small car like a camry or Corolla but if you were to say to them a Toyota Pickup they would have to assume it was a pickup truck Haha better for marketing I would think.
Hilux was a name given to toyota pickups sold in 3rd world countries. They were built tougher than the normal pickups, and they needed very little servicing. Built for those countries without auto shops around.
I don't know why they didn't stick with the Hilux name, that's what they were branded as back in the 1970's. They also called the 1980's JDM "Master Ace Surf" van simply the "Toyota Van" in the US. Also 1986 is first year for independent front suspension in the US market. Hardcore off road guys swap it out for a solid front axle(easier to do massive lifts/more articulation), but the independent setup does drive/steer/ride nicer on a paved road stock vs stock.
Really the 3.0 3VZE is a reliable engine other than the head gasket issue. The power was adequate for its time and mine delivers decent gas mileage. Usually 17 around town and 20 on the highway. It's been a good engine and other than the initial replacement under recall, it hasn't blown another head gasket. It's really up to how the owners and how they treat them. Use good parts, don't thrash the Hell out of it, and it will last. Many of my friends have 22re powered Toyota trucks and they haven't all been great. Several have blown head gaskets or had to rebuild them for other reasons. I don't speak for everyone but I wouldn't sweat buying a 3.0 Toyota truck.
I owned the 92 with the V6. Pathetic horses, and the engine blew a head gasket right before the end of warranty. I loved the truck, and my major complaint with independent up front? You couldn't jack it up like the 85!!
My dad has driven a '91 22re to the coal mines for almost my entire life so far. It looks terrible, its a mine truck after all, but the engine stills sounds fine and always gets him there
New trucks are just so big and bloated including the $$$. I had the opportunity to buy one in 94 but went the car route with a boy racer car in college, still regret not getting a toyota pickup and drive it for the next 25 years...:-[
The hilux is the perfect size. My friend had a nice one and lift it. The graffiti decals make it look good. There had to kill too th-cam.com/video/xnWKz7Cthkk/w-d-xo.html.
I got tired of hearing you say what incredible shape it's in after about the 50th time you said it. Being repetitive just because you can't think of anything else to say is annoying.
The last generation of Japanese built Toyota trucks sold in America. I'd take that over a brand new Tacoma any day.
Can someone help me get any kind for my sculpture practices PLEASE!
Am Chidi Simon Iloani on Facebook. I NEED A TRUCK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
I have one of these trucks I can’t tell you how much I love it
I’ll take a 95 Tacoma any day
Tacomas are good trucks too
That was a sweet intro with the grungy electronic music, reminded me of playing 90's video games like Perfect Dark

I have an '89 4x4 Toyota pickup with the 22re, and man, its not in amazing shape, but I sure love the hell out of it.
I had the same truck in 89!
I have mine still drive it everyday. Love it.
Me tooooo
NovaNovice is the 22-re better then the v6 3.0 ??
The v6 had problems with the head gasket. The 22re has less power though.
I want either an older Tacoma or late 80's to 1995 Hilux for a project some day. Old Toyotas were made with such simplicity and quality
I absolutely fell in love with this truck. It was incredible. I know you wouldn't regret it if you bought one.
Don’t go Tacoma! 85-95 pickups are legendary in design and quality of materials. It went downhill in a way from then on.
i got a 2000 tacoma handed down from my dad. i know what u mean... they are timeless and last forever... they are tanks.

I just bought one with a fibreglass Rally kit. It was the pace truck for a dirt jump track a few years ago. So stoked as it’s my first truck after owning 9 sports cars.
I had a 92 in high school. Absolutely loved it

I have a 3.0 is that okay would it ever blow
Brian Layton h0w much your pickup/car I need to buy apickup car

I have a 93 Toyota v4 22r selling it for 15,00
Brian Layton how much your. pickup car I need. a picckup car to buy.
"Nothing rattles in here" apparently our pickups are very different lmao
I have a 93 Celica GT with 92000 miles just drove it from DC to Colorado Springs. NOTHING is better than old Toyotas.
Awesome review! Love the intro! Glad to see other people who like these old toyota trucks as much as me.
I owned the same model but a 22re extended cab and it was a dream. So clean and never gave you any hassle when taken care of. Lost old girl to a fire. Still looking for a replacement but it will never be the same. Such beautiful and fun little trucks. Great review! You've gained a new subscriber.
These are the best compact trucks ever made. Hands down! I've had 5, and wish I still kept them all!
Immaculate truck! What's up with the Ford t-shirt? ha!

I have one as well fully restored cost me a lot of money i always get compliments on it its a 94 Toyota pickup 3.0L
I have a 1991 22re with 148K miles on it. It was my very first vehicle purchase. Factory wheels have some rust on them. Great truck. Truly.
I've got a 91 SR5 4x4 and it rocks. Parts replacement for the years and miles have been slight. Good little trucks.
Very nice truck, my friend had one exactly like this, and bought it new. The early 90's mini trucks were the best, they just don't make small pickups like that anymore.
Great trucks Had a 93 with the 22r always wanted the 6. This one is so clean
I've heard that the 22r is bulletproof though so may have been the better choice
My 91 pickup is running 250k+ still strong gonna get it rebuilt by 22reperformance in a couple weeks
I have the 91 3.0 v6 with 230,000 miles still runs great
One of the best intros I’ve heard
My first car was a 1991 Toyota pickup extended cab, 5 speed 4wd with a V6. Drove it for 8 years. Miss it. No AC tho, that sucked in the south.
Toyota needs to bring these back. They would sell like hot cakes. Small simple and reliable.
I had an 89 V6 4x4... Wish I had kept it. The only thing I'd be concerned with is the head gasket blowing... those tended to be an issue.
dcabinet I got a 92 V6 4x4
I had a '91. Also had the head gasket issue. It was a recall, so I had Toyota put in a new motor for just the labor cost. It was around $800. Man I miss that truck. You don't know what you have until it's gone
R Lanterman yeah man, they’re awesome trucks.
I have the very same truck but with the 4 cylinder and light metallic blue and 138K miles.
I have an 89 black SR5 4 x 2, auto on column with overdrive, long bed that will knock your socks off.
awesome truck.!! I Own a 95 tacoma 2.7 4 cylinders 5 speed 4x4 love it.. im keeping it in the family..
jose guzman is there any head gasket issues with this engine? 2.7
Nice music edit in the beginning (sounds like strangers things) definitely fits in 👍🏼
I absolutely love how you’re wearing a Ford shirt.
I remember my dad driving a flatbed like this. I had a hard time believing that thing could haul so much.

Love the editing, and nice truck

Had the identical truck except mine was 1990. Loved it
Nice Toyota Hilux !!!! 👍
TOYOTA THE BEAST OF THE WORLD
I would never have thought it was 4wd
IFS was new to Toyota in ‘85, but the competition had already moved on.
I have a 94 22r, it's a 4 cylinders unlike this one on the video. But it's a great truck. I love it, this is my third pickup from Toyota.
Sounds awesome! Enjoy it!
FYI... for the record...1986 was the first year of independent suspension. 1985 still had solid axles.
Matthew Grisham half way through 85 they switched
I have a 94 pickup v6 same color but blue stripes
Wow wow !! What a treasure !
Toyota hilux 2.8 turbo diesel and 2.4 in Europe freaking beast!!!!
my 1990 4x4 sunroof cover rattles , i don't like the small mirrors ,and the seats are comfortable but i like my hilux it go's through deep snow
You didn’t mention the cracks on the dash.
Do you know where i can get an entire interior furneture (console, doors interior dash...etc)
Just waiting for the head gaskets to go bad haha, just messin..sorta
Stuff stuff and More stuff yea the 22r was better
Love this truck wish I could have one but there hard to get one and find one

I have one 1993 4x4 v6 it’s amazing
is that dylan from the x factor who sold his truck to get to the audition??
Do you sell the truck
Im 6ft will i fit confurtable in this truck ?
And it pisses me off to no end to hear some youngster (by my standards) call one of these old Toyotas a "Tacoma". Its not a god damn Tacoma, its just a Toyota pickup.

Damn. Who knew these qoukd be legendary to younger gen. There's something about them though. Drive one
Thank gawd my 88 got totaled before the head gasket went.. My 93 lost it at 100k & 200k after a warranty replacement.. F that motor..
what is the name of the intro song. the best i heard
I know this truck from Instagram!
j_mosk what is the @?
@dmesser92
So did Toyota not give this truck a name in the U S? Does anyone know this story behind the name,or the lack of name?
It's just the "Toyota Pickup" here. I honestly have no idea why Toyota didn't brand it as the Hilux here like it did elsewhere.

I don't know why they didn't stick with the Hilux name, that's what they were branded as back in the 1970's. They also called the 1980's JDM "Master Ace Surf" van simply the "Toyota Van" in the US.

Does anyone know where I can get those decals on this truck?
James Dean Creations is where I got them from. High quality and look like the originals.
What head unit is that?
I know this are rare to find tho especially in good condition and low miles
What model is this?
DLX with the v6
That poor 3.0 could have been something greater without the EGR system. Really chokes the thing up. Doing an EGR delete is worth it.
Más bonita que las de hoy día.
I owned the 92 with the V6. Pathetic horses, and the engine blew a head gasket right before the end of warranty. I loved the truck, and my major complaint with independent up front? You couldn't jack it up like the 85!!
You need a Toyota shirt...
How much?
Man, I'd call 1-800-GOTOYOTA and make them send me the brochures, then put the pictures on my wall.

You mean here in the US.....AMERICA is a continent
Toyota strong
I think this truck is a car in India know as qualis
I think so
I know the first 1 minute 15 seconds qualifies as *T O Y O T A W A V E*

Drives a Toyota pick up but wears a Ford t shirt 😂
yea but Ford is crossed out the whole time (by the belt). sorta poetic
The front bumper isn't original.... just saying. But love the video.
pablo cabrera Actually, it is. The rear bumper is not original. The rear was replaced after the truck was rear-ended in 2006.
yeah, that is the exact same as my '91
Yea its definitely original. I have that exact one on my 90
pablo cabrera looked similar to my stock bumper
New trucks are just so big and bloated including the $$$. I had the opportunity to buy one in 94 but went the car route with a boy racer car in college, still regret not getting a toyota pickup and drive it for the next 25 years...:-[
Beginning is the only good part
Awesome truck, very thin review. Could have cut it down to 30 seconds.
The hilux is the perfect size. My friend had a nice one and lift it. The graffiti decals make it look good. There had to kill too
