    That is a GLORIOUS tree ...please pick up any seed pods since they are extremely poisonous...and in some countries(UK) it is illegal to have a "personal" tree . ..it is only found in an arboretum / botanical garden with a fence around the tree. The seed pods are collected daily prior to the opening of the public access facility

    When I still lived in Brazil my neighbors (a lovely German older couple) planted almost a dozen of those trees and made an archway for his house and it was really pretty.
    They are called golden rain trees in portuguese

      That's what I'd love to do, plant several along a walkway, have seen pictures of it and it makes a lovely golden archway - just beautiful. And they grow quickly too.

    Important / life saving QUESTION : please, if that's alright... Can you handle / make things out of a Golden rain tree without getting poisonous effects ? Mine is huge & fail over dead & I want to use the wood, ANY ADVICE please help, ? I ask for serious protective reasons to understand any chance I can make use of it or will I risk getting poisoned from it's sap ????? I was told it's harmful to use & not to mess with it from rumors told, so I dunno anything about it ! Can somebody please help me understand better if this is true ??? Btw Thank you to anyone willing to answer in advance for there knowledge of the risk heal wise.... Couldn't find a thing head's from tales on this.... Paul - Wade - Hampton, thanks for watching and writing! As you suspect, the bark, leaves, roots, seed pods, etc., are all poisonous. Here's a posting I found online:
      All parts of the tree are poisonous: roots, bark, wood, leaves, flower-buds, petals, and seedpods. The harmful part of the plant is the seedpods. In many cases of ingestion of a small number of seeds, there are no symptoms.
      Laburnum anagyroides (Common Laburnum, Golden Chain ...plants.ces.ncsu.edu › plants › laburnum-anagyroides.
      Having said that, I also found a wood library that shows Liburnum (Golden Chain), used for woodworking:
      What is laburnum wood used for?
      Common Uses: Turned objects, musical instruments (woodwinds), furniture, veneer, fence posts, archery bows, carving, and small specialty wood objects. Comments: Laburnum is widely planted as an ornamental tree throughout Europe.
      Laburnum | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification ...www.wood-database.com › laburnum
      So, bottom line? You'll have to make the choice whether to use the wood or not! Best Regards, DFJ

      @@DirtFarmerJay Thank you so much, so if I understand correctly, the golden rain tree is not harmful to touch but is to use for any consumptions like seed pods, so I'd be well / okay to use it for making a bench to sit on ECT ? If I understand correctly, & btw thank you so very much Sincerely for helping me to understand & learn all I can about this, it is saving me alot of time & efforts, & hopefully anyone else seeing this will have there answer's to of what I've asked, so in this at least I'm happy to know for safety reasons, unless I understand correctly, if I do, wait a second, the wood its self is harmful / poisonous correct ??? If so, thank you sincerely for the education, I indefinitely do not want to be harmed, so I will use GLOVES to handle the wood than ? A smart idea or is it safe to handle ? Just so I understand correctly.... Thank you in advance sincerely, btw you have a new subscriber, thank you friend in advance for answering this...

    Oh my gosh! I was 8 1/2 and my brother was 7, and we and several neighbor children had to make an unexpected trip to the ER after we ate several of the pods. They were very pretty, and I don't remember them being distasteful, and we, being inquisitive children, just had to try the golden beans! Yes, it is poisonous. 😱 Warn your neighbors.

      Some Buddy, thanks for sharing your experience and validating the fact that there is a risk with these trees and one needs to make an informed decision on whether or not to have them in your yardscape. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

      @@DirtFarmerJay Our parents took us and some of the bean pods to the ER, and the Doctors recognized it. We were given syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting. It didn't help my brother, though, and they had to pump his stomach. By then he had gotten quite lethargic, so it would have been dangerous to further induce vomiting. The other children were all in different rooms with their parents, and four of the chidren had to stay in hospital that night for observation. I believe it was a total of seven of us that hadden eaten it. The tree was in the yard of a neighbor's of one of the children, and hung down over their fence line. I don't remember it being a very large tree, either. It's branches draped down in what I would call a "weeping willow" growth formation. After being told of this poisoning, the owners cut the tree down. None of our parents held them responsible.

    Thanks Jay: we are in MA and every year in August our two trees lose their leaves only for these to reappear a few months later. Flowers are great but for years lichens have established on the bark. As MA has been going through droughts in recent years I figured I would use watering bags filling them once a week; they take about a day to drain. Your comment and the lichen suggest to me this may not be a good idea but on the other hand I have the impression that the loss of leaves has resulted in stinted growth as the trees are only 10-12 feet high after 10 years or so.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a bit of a finicky tree. It doesn't like wet or acidic soil (below 7.0), they prefer slightly alkaline soil, doesn't like full sun as much as part shade. How does all this fit with your setting? DFJ

    • @edbuurman3262
      @edbuurman3262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DirtFarmerJay My goal for now was to get the trees through August without them losing their leaves. So I put the watering bags on a month ago. If this works this year I may start watering bags later next year to reduce wet soil, and only use them when it presumably really matters.
      The trees are close to the house so that creates the part shade. They are to the north of the house so that is not ideal, but we are in suburbia with the neighbors house 20 yards away breaking the winds most of the time. I do not know the pH of the soil but it is very rocky soil, there is no clay and I occasionally provide compost/manure.
      What may play a factor is their location close to the street. There is not a lot of traffic but I now wonder whether salts in the winter could contribute. But I also wonder what, if anything, the presence of lichens indicates? I always thought lichens indicated clean air, moist and shade, so a healthy environment but I have seen opinions from others that express concern when lichens are present.

    • @edbuurman3262
      @edbuurman3262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, just measured the pH using pH paper and I think it is between 6.5-7. I took the sample between one of the trees and a well blossoming lilac 1-2 yards away which I believe needs alkaline soil as well. Finally, I do mulch the area every couple of years. Do you think I have to add lime to the soil and, if so, how much and how often?

      Marie Mccoubrey - great to hear from you there in Belfast! We hope to visit your beautiful country someday! As for the Golden Chain Tree, they can be relatively close to the house, depending on how much room you have. They have a somewhat vertical growth habit, but need some room to spread out. How much room to you have to place them? Is the place you are interested in planting them a narrow space or more open? Let us hear from you! Best Regards, DFJ

    Would it grow in zone 9b Arizona?

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robin, it MAY grow where you are, in your specific setting, as zones are "averages" for an area, and each setting is actually a microclimate. If there is shade that will keep the tree from being out of the AZ sun day in and out, you will have a better chance of it flourishing. Laburnum (Golden Chain) trees do best in zones 5 to 7. Does that help? Best, DFJ

      Hi L Chris. Thanks for watching and writing. The Golden Chain doesn't take more water than most trees. Of course it's important to give it plenty when it's first planted and sending out roots. It's blossoms are amazing. Best to you. DirtFarmer Maggie
