People don't understand how a big parrot bites. How they are designed to use the cutting edge of their lower beak or how powerful it can be. I had a Blue Jay fly into my house the other day and had to catch him to let him go. While I was holding him he was displaying his contempt for me by viciously attacking my finger. He was pissed and scared and was biting my finger over and over and I just started laughing. Not so with a parrot that wants to make a point.
He/she's scared for it's life thinking it's about to be your lunch and your laughing, I can't help but think this might not be a very confidence inspiring reaction! 😂
Actually, the parrot is quite smart, it was able to discern that the screw thing and wine opener are inherently more dangerous than the smooth round shape of the nail polish bottle.

My mom has 2 blue/ gold macaws she has had them since I was a teen , now as an adult I was give an amazon bird I thought I could handle. 3 years later...It's been a huge struggle and alot of tears! I want this bird to have a happy life. I'm almost positive this poor bird has been mistreated in the past, so he / she will need alot of love and I will need alot of patience and guidance. Thanks for this video. It actually eased my guilt over not letting our parakeet out of his cage. He developed cataract in one eye, and now it's growing in the other one too. Ever since then he grew fearful of getting out. He knows how to manoeuvre blindly in his little home, but outside seems to have become one big, dark and scary abbyss unfortunately. Vet also said not to change too much in the environment of his cage (which pretty much speaks for itself, as he's becoming totally blind). I guess we'll just have to keep him entertained in his small safe zone from now on. No climbing ropes to get dizzy on anymore.

A trick I do with my bird which really isn’t a trick it’s kind of mean but if my parrot goes to bite me I will slightly twist my arm just a little while he’s on it and it throws him a little off balance not to where he falls but it stops him from biting me then when he does it again I turn my arm slightly again and eventually he stopped because he knew every time you go to bite your going to be unbalanced and he eventually stopped biting me
What I do sometimes is I play with the object for a little while the bird is watching then I let the bird touch it. It’s just another thing people can try🙂 great video by the way!

Hi I have a yellow crowned Amazon his previous owners left him in a tiny cage which he spent 16 years or so in, when I got him he would lunge at you from inside the cage and was really fearful of stick training he literally would cower when you got the stick so that was no good, I’ve had him 10 months and he’s out all day he will step up from the radiator next to his cage but not from his cage, but he will still bite for no apparent reason yesterday he walked onto the radiator put his foot up which he does to step up, so I went over he stepped up walked up my arm and literally bit a huge chunk out of my ear which meant a trip to the ER and stitches, why does he still seem so unpredictable I’m never gonna give up on him no matter what I just want him to be happy and not bite so bad
I just saw the video where you mention Comet likes to look at his feet occasionally. Now I can tell Comet apart from Tusa and I notice that habit in this video. Very funny!
Comet has a lot more yellow. He is a high yellow Camelot Macaw. She said that she bought him for $750. I was torn between a high yellow Catalina ($6,500) and a rescue Catalina ($3000). I went with the rescue because I thought it was better to adopt and I was hoping that I could make a positive difference in her life. She is definitely bonded to me but 4 months later and she still has a very annoying random biting problem.
I wonder how everybody's African Greys about tool using and puzzle-solving? Sheba my gray solves 3-wheel combination padlocks and we're now working on a pellet maze with seven slide bars that she's got to work the pellet through one at a time.
Undoing padlocks is just a matter of time thing. It depends on how entertained they are by solving it. It doesn’t matter how smart the bird is, if it doesn’t see a point to undoing padlocks, or working that hard for food it wont.
Oh yea the training came thru for him lol as soon as you popped the container open he started looking all around behind you like where where yes please!
Thank you for your great videos! I am a new Mum to a 13 yr old green wing macaw. She has recently become very agressive/territorial especially with me. She seems to like my husband more, but can still be crabby with him! Husband does not give in and stands his ground. Should I be doing more of this too? She is much worse with me! Lunging, wanting to nip/bite me. I'm saddened because I wanted her as my companion. I appreciate any advice or ideas!! 🌷

Stand down...example: when macaw 'dances' along back of couch ( it is not against a wall) to where my husband is standing by back of couch...she will peck him or at him. But husband does not 'leave'. She looks as if she wants to 'own' her favorite place! Which is just about all her places she hangs out! Whether its the couch, the window sill, her perch, especially on her cage! We've had her bout 2 months now. So were both new to this. But I do see her being more relaxed around my husband!! Will check the Parrot 101 you suggested! Thanks so much!
thank you so much for info, i am always so busy and leave my guy out all day...crazy thing is he loves the shop vac i use just for cleaning his cage and around his area....he get's on me and while it's running and i am cleaning he crawls down my arm goes to the nozzle and loves the suction...i laugh so much at this...prob not good but, very entertaining...but, for being out he only goes in when i leave or bedtime...i didn't know he gets so bored
Have you ever considered putting two 5x8 Aviary together by taking out one side of each 5x8 aviary and bolt them together to make a 5x16 or a 10 x 8 depending what side you remove?
I just found you and enjoyed your talk.I have the problem with my 6 yr old male Timneh .In the last 11/2 yrs he’s gotten territorial in his cage He’s not when he’s out and loves his head scratched and I can pick him up right from the floor.But when I try to clean his cage and he’s out he runs over to his big cage and climbs right up and then it becomes a chore when cleaning this cage and he comes over and wants to bite me.This hurts me emotionally especially because I never had a bird that did this .
He is a second generation hybrid. If you take a catalina hybrid (which is a scarlet macaw + blue and gold macaw) and breed that with a scarlet macaw you get this one, a camelot macaw.
I have some exotic fish, he would be what is know as an F3 in that trade. I fed out a harlequin macaw about twenty years ago he was a nice looking bird. I brokered Parrots in the 90's (bought from breeders and sold to pet shops and people) and a Camelot is the only one I never saw in person, I did know about them though. In those days hybrids were frowned upon and even though I always liked them you could not sell them. (lots of untrue rumors about behavioral problems)
YESSSS thank you honestly I'm having sooo much trouble with my 3 month old Indian ringneck. She just keeps biting me for no reason literally, she'll just come onto my hand herself and start biting or she would be sitting on my arm and start looking for my hand or fingers to bite them. And today I was having trouble with just this she kept biting me I would would take her back to her cage which she doesnt like being put in mind you and then I'd let her out again and she'd just continue to bite and the cage is not the problem because I let her out in the morning and she only goes back in when its bedtime.
shes usualy out for 5 or 6 hours just chilling with me and I just got her about a month ago her name is sherbert shes not totally tame but she sits on my finger and flys around the room somtimes when she sees somthing new like a new toy she totaly freeks out she has a perch she sits on outside of her cage but she mostly sits with me on my finger when im on my laptop or on my desk or perch
I have a cockatiel and it seems like her favourite colour is blue and green. if she is around a blue or green object that she likes and I go to her and ask her to come to me she will start to run to my finger or face and attack me. I don't know what to do. should I ignore her and walk away, or should I put her back into her cage? any suggestions? btw she's not even one year old yet

Good video. My bird lets me pet her sometimes . I’ll say “back rub” and she leans against the cage and I pet her back. Other times she wants to bite me. That’s when I see the whites of her eyes.

can you do a video on how to prevent forgetting tricks in birds? Like sometimes my bird doesnt remember the trick even when I did it 5 minutes ago, And also he starts getting bitey when i train him.
@@MrJdubz100 yep :/ hes a parrot and he gets really in depth with the training and only remembers the trick every so often after sessions. he also on does it with treats and no way around treats.
My parrot loves French fries. It's principally the same as potatoes. But i have to remove the salt. And of course, he normally gets food for birds, but if i have made French fries for me in the bake oven he get's one from me.
I only serve them cooked sweet potatoes, I simply steam them in the microwave. I clean the cages daily either in the morning or evening, or sometimes mid day after they've eaten their breakfast. Just depends on when I have the time to do so because after I clean the cages themselves, I sweep and vacuum. I usually do it while they're eating so they aren't trying to climb out while I am going in and out ;)
@BirdTricks If you use a vacuum cleaner then i highly recommend to use a vacuum cleaner with a High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Vacuum cleaners made for the industry do have that, usual household vacuum cleaners usually don't have that. The reason why is simple. This bird shit can be very unhealthy to the lunges of the human body, even if it is from your own birds. A much better way to clean a cage is by doing it wet with water to reduce the risk of raising unhealthy dust.
My blue and gold is about 4 1/2 months old and he continuously tries to get on my shoulder and I don’t want him too at such a young age because his balance isn’t that great yet. Whenever I try to put my other hand in the way for him to step up on he bites down and it really hurts. How do I get him to not bite?

I’ve had my mustache parakeet for about 7/8 months now she is 2 years old but extremely aggressive, She can step up and perch on shoulders but she is so incredibly temperamental and constantly shouts angrily and bites and lunges at my hand even when shown a treat to persuade her to step up she will still lunge and bite at my hand. She is easily spooked by everything and cannot go any lower than shoulder level or she flies back to her perch or to a higher area, it’s hard to find what she likes and give her toys that require play and thought when she will not go on any flat surface that’s lower than her perch or somewhere higher. She bites hard and growls constantly at approach of anyone and so I have no idea how to start creating a bond with her, she shows no interest in her toys despite switching and trying different sorts and I have no idea how to make progress with her I would really really appreciate any tips or help!! (She was previously owned by a family who gave her up to a pet store where we bought her and is supposedly hand reared and very tame)

You say that you just rescued so she is probably biting out of fear. Are you respecting her other ways of saying “no” or just trying to get her to step up until she inevitably bites you? Parrots are wild animals at heart and they need time, as in at least a few months, but possibly a year to get to know you.
Erm I got a baby bluefronted amazon. She bites me if I try getting her to step up and I'm scared of taking her out of her cage sense she never stepped on and is fully flighted and when I would have to put her back she would have to be grabbed by force and I don't want that. How do I tame her and get her comfotable with stepping up?
I have a 40 year old Red Lored Amazon and if she knows your scared she will bite and bully you. You got to be the leader of the flock. Don't yell at your bird or let her know your scared, Amazon are like a 3 year old child, they make great pets.

Im giving up on my cockatiel because hes very aggressive inside and outside the cage and he wasnt like that at beggining, of course i never punished him i tried correcting him, by blowing a bit on him until he stopped but it never worked, i went to the vet to check if there was something up and nope he is healthy, changed his food and still nothing he didnt eat his food and started eating his bar until i changed back and he was famished. i felt angry at myself for that happening. I guess he was raised by a breeder just to sell. Im giving away to an animal association because i feel like he doesnt deserve to be locked up in his cage being with an owner he probably doesnt like (which is me).
By the way your your question was about an African Grey that bites and is fearful of toys? Like she said start with one small crumpled up piece of paper in the food dish food is an amazing draw as far as new items are concerned start with the approach present the item at a distance so that it can be recognized present an item outside the cage so it can be exempt as a man to bet only at a distance finally present the item in your hand or at the other end of the counter so that the bird has two come to the item and horning although this is very important to teach any parrot this is the wonderful thing you're going to find out about Grace it starts simple and slow it gets more and more complicated and more and more beautiful every time I have a female teenage African grey I have 6 combination locks Inside the Cage each of them holds a little baggie she has to unlock the lock to release the baggie to release the food she's done so in 15 minutes and I've still got 30 more years to teach your new tricks
Do other parrot owners find that the birds really feel offended by your phone? My African grey used to get so angry if I had the phone around her. Now my macaw is starting to do the same thing
i used the diving technique when my parrot wouldn't stop biting. i dunked him in a bucket of water for 10 seconds on multiple occasions and....wala´....he stopped! best advice i EVER got!!
If those birds are so smart then wouldn't they figure out that they're not supposed to bite you if you spray a light mist of garlic aroma at them when they do it?
Does anyone else try to give there parrot they're most favorite treat in training... except they don't give 2 fucks about training? And they will calmly take the treat drop it immediately and lunge, even if you're at a lunge safe distance, and they don't care and will throw themselves off the perch (NOT JUMP, but lunge so far out that they literally almost fall) cuz it's worth it apparently. Then they blame you cuz you weren't there to catch them with your skin. ._. He also steps up ever so nicely like no different from any other time he steps up and then SUPRISE got ya.. Sometimes I think he understands. All the training videos and advice of my peers and works against them. 😭.
Have you tried changing the diet or taking him to the vet? It might be picky or have health issues, parrots are very good at hiding illnesses but weight is one of the biggest give aways
This one is an easy answer. Long enough to put it in the oven. If it bites put it in the oven and then apply a little heat until it learns it's lesson. Or you could waterboard it. God bless the cia for teaching us how to discipline.

My Catalina Macaw does the same thing. I have a few seconds heads up before she bites but not enough to do anything about it.

Beautiful Macaw; What mix is he? Scarlet and Military? he looks like a multi-generational mix. Crossed then crossed with a cross. (F2 or F3)

And today I was having trouble with just this she kept biting me I would would take her back to her cage which she doesnt like being put in mind you and then I'd let her out again and she'd just continue to bite and the cage is not the problem because I let her out in the morning and she only goes back in when its bedtime.
shes usualy out for 5 or 6 hours just chilling with me and I just got her about a month ago her name is sherbert shes not totally tame but she sits on my finger and flys around the room somtimes when she sees somthing new like a new toy she totaly freeks out she has a perch she sits on outside of her cage but she mostly sits with me on my finger when im on my laptop or on my desk or perch
I have a cockatiel and it seems like her favourite colour is blue and green. if she is around a blue or green object that she likes and I go to her and ask her to come to me she will start to run to my finger or face and attack me. I don't know what to do. should I ignore her and walk away, or should I put her back into her cage? any suggestions? btw she's not even one year old yet

I have a 9 month old Indian ringneck and she bites any time I try to take her out or put her in the cage or even if I just try to get her to step up. What shout I do? She will even bite my ear if shes on my shoulder

Good video. My bird lets me pet her sometimes . I’ll say “back rub” and she leans against the cage and I pet her back. Other times she wants to bite me. That’s when I see the whites of her eyes.
You petting her back could be making her hormonal and causing aggression. Another cause could be too much fat in her diet, being scared, etc.

can you do a video on how to prevent forgetting tricks in birds? Like sometimes my bird doesnt remember the trick even when I did it 5 minutes ago, And also he starts getting bitey when i train him.
Is it a parrot? I have yet to have a parrot learn a trick (actually learn not just see it and do it once) and then forget it 5 minutes later.
@@MrJdubz100 yep :/ hes a parrot and he gets really in depth with the training and only remembers the trick every so often after sessions. he also on does it with treats and no way around treats.
I watched you feed the flock and wonder do you give the birds cooked or raw sweet potatoes? And when do you clean the cages?
My parrot loves French fries. It's principally the same as potatoes. But i have to remove the salt.
And of course, he normally gets food for birds, but if i have made French fries for me in the bake oven he get's one from me.
I only serve them cooked sweet potatoes, I simply steam them in the microwave. I clean the cages daily either in the morning or evening, or sometimes mid day after they've eaten their breakfast. Just depends on when I have the time to do so because after I clean the cages themselves, I sweep and vacuum. I usually do it while they're eating so they aren't trying to climb out while I am going in and out ;)

If you use a vacuum cleaner then i highly recommend to use a vacuum cleaner with a High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Vacuum cleaners made for the industry do have that, usual household vacuum cleaners usually don't have that.
The reason why is simple. This bird shit can be very unhealthy to the lunges of the human body, even if it is from your own birds.
A much better way to clean a cage is by doing it wet with water to reduce the risk of raising unhealthy dust.

Great tips and advice however I definitely would not use a rubber band, rather natural twine, cotton string or a cable tie.
You realize that cotton string can cause impaction? Rubber band is natural latex. Its from a tree.

My blue and gold is about 4 1/2 months old and he continuously tries to get on my shoulder and I don’t want him too at such a young age because his balance isn’t that great yet. I’ve had my mustache parakeet for about 7/8 months now she is 2 years old but extremely aggressive, She can step up and perch on shoulders but she is so incredibly temperamental and constantly shouts angrily and bites and lunges at my hand even when shown a treat to persuade her to step up she will still lunge and bite at my hand. She is easily spooked by everything and cannot go any lower than shoulder level or she flies back to her perch or to a higher area, it’s hard to find what she likes and give her toys that require play and thought when she will not go on any flat surface that’s lower than her perch or somewhere higher. She bites hard and growls constantly at approach of anyone and so I have no idea how to start creating a bond with her, she shows no interest in her toys despite switching and trying different sorts and I have no idea how to make progress with her

You say that you just rescued so she is probably biting out of fear. Are you respecting her other ways of saying “no” or just trying to get her to step up until she inevitably bites you? Parrots are wild animals at heart and they need time, as in at least a few months, but possibly a year to get to know you.
Erm I got a baby bluefronted amazon. She bites me if I try getting her to step up and I'm scared of taking her out of her cage sense she never stepped on and is fully flighted and when I would have to put her back she would have to be grabbed by force and I don't want that. How do I tame her and get her comfotable with stepping up?

I have a 40 year old Red Lored Amazon and if she knows your scared she will bite and bully you. You got to be the leader of the flock. Don't yell at your bird or let her know your scared, Amazon are like a 3 year old child, they make great pets.

Im giving up on my cockatiel because hes very aggressive inside and outside the cage and he wasnt like that at beggining, of course i never punished him i tried correcting him, by blowing a bit on him until he stopped but it never worked, i went to the vet to check if there was something up and nope he is healthy, changed his food and still nothing he didnt eat his food and started eating his bar until i changed back and he was famished. i felt angry at myself for that happening. I guess he was raised by a breeder just to sell. Im giving away to an animal association because i feel like he doesnt deserve to be locked up in his cage being with an owner he probably doesnt like (which is me).

Yes my Senegal attacks the phone whenever it rings.

i used the diving technique when my parrot wouldn't stop biting. i dunked him in a bucket of water for 10 seconds on multiple occasions and....wala´....he stopped! best advice i EVER got!!
And plastic you should never leave a parrot with because they will destroy it and possibly injest it which could kill them.

Does anyone else try to give there parrot they're most favorite treat in training... except they don't give 2 fucks about training? And they will calmly take the treat drop it immediately and lunge, even if you're at a lunge safe distance, and they don't care and will throw themselves off the perch (NOT JUMP, but lunge so far out that they literally almost fall) cuz it's worth it apparently. Then they blame you cuz you weren't there to catch them with your skin. ._. He also steps up ever so nicely like no different from any other time he steps up and then SUPRISE got ya..
Sometimes I think he understands. All the training videos and advice of my peers and works against them. 😭.

Have you tried changing the diet or taking him to the vet? It might be picky or have health issues, parrots are very good at hiding illnesses but weight is one of the biggest give aways
