Actually zanzeer was written by Salim sahab alone , even Javed was not associated with Salim sahab at that time as this thing is already revealed by Salim sahab in an interview with komal nahata etc Bollywood business. The story of zanzeer was narrated to Dharmendra in that time by Salim ji , already however things didn't work with dharmendra and finally Amitabh ji came on board with prakash Mehra as a director.

Zanjeer movie brought amazing turnaround in Amitabh Bachchan's career. Had he refused to do the film, he would not have reached where he is now.
The film was against the trend of that era in which romantic movies were coming one after another. Prakash Mehra took the risk and ultimately it paid off. Also, the film struck a chord with the audiences because India was suffering from low economic growth and the common man had to go through massive corruption and face injustice. And this film highlighted these issues and showed Amitabh Bachchan's character as the common man fighting against corruption in the system and looking for justice. So people watching the film saw in Amitabh Bachchan as one of them, a common man fighting with the system.
This movie started the trend of action movies in Bollywood.
