- Famous writer duo Salim Khan & Javed Akhtar fought for the copyright of the movie Zanjeer (1973). Salim Javed had sold the script of the movie Zanjeer (1973) to Prakash Mehra who eventually directed a blockbuster movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri & Pran based on the script written by Salim Javed. However in 2012, it was decided that Zanjeer (1973) will be remade and Salim Javed sued the makers of the new Zanjeer. This video gives information on the entire incident involving Salim Khan & Javed Akhtar against the makers the new Zanjeer movie. This video also provides information on Javed Akhtar winning an appeal against the Service Tax Department in November 2021 for the earnings on Zanjeer (1973).

Zanjeer was itself copied from an assorted Hollywood movies like Death rides a horse plus a bit of Dev Anand movie CID and others.

Issues mostly land up in disputes.
I think in this case Salim - Javed had the last laiugh. They got 2 crores for a script which was 50 years old and on the other hand the film did not fare well at the box office, I do not know how much money did the producers make, but the movie did not garner that much excitement as it did in 1973.
Great to hear that the writers fought against the Service Tax Department and finally they got their entire 23 lacs back from the department.

Salim javed had told the film maker that for zanjeer Amitabh is the only one they recommend even though amitabh was not a success as hero till them. And i do agree , only Amitabh could have fit in.

Film ke saare rights producer ke hote hain, writers ko ek baar paisa mil gaya,ab kya baar baar milega,nayi zanjeer ka bhi to koi writer raha hoga,ye to blackmailing aur money extortion hua, Prakash Mehra ke sons ek number ke ghonchu nikle jo faltu in budhdhon ko paise de baithe,ye case court me nahi tikta,tabhi dono buddhon ne 2cr leke settlement kar liya.😏

Technically, if they have sold the script, they have also sold the copyright over the characters. So, who plays those characters is rather irrelevant. It's just that, they wanted to shell out some extra cash out of the producer, which is fine I guess. Also, Zanjeer isn't an original script, and so is Sholay which is just ripped off from western classics. I wonder if Salim Javed ever credited the writers of those westerns.

Salim Javed can't ask fees for the same story twice, for which they've already received fees for, do they pay income tax twice for one year returns, it's absolutely ridiculous.
Producers of zanjeer bevakoof nikle, hence smart salim javed encashef. Script will be sold once only nnot with actor names, songs etc which is producers right

Unless and until author sells the copyright too, author is the default owner of script. Same way as any other creative work like Music.
When I buy a music CD, I only get the right to listen it. I cant make remix, or I cant copy it and sell it.

Karz was sadly a flop back then... people could not understand the film when it released. Later it became a classic.
