My Dad had a private pilot’s license as a teenager and flew extensively in biplanes. Was 18 in 1943 and served in the USAAC was in training to be a B-17 pilot when the war ended.

My daddy was a bombardier/navigator based in England. This is the best source of info on the B-17 I’ve found. Thank you! 🇺🇸

My 20-year-old dad was a radio operator. He flew out of Africa and bombed Italy, from September through December of 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal 4 times. Never talked much about the war with the exception of seeing newsreels on the TV show, 20th Century, when he would recognize battles. I was named after his pilot who he said was phenomenal and was the reason he survived his service.

@@richardsmith2684 My dad, T/Sgt Ralph D Wells was assigned to the 459th BG 757th Squadron. His missions were between August and December of 44. He never mentioned gunnery training but did mention New Mexico where he received his radio training and met his future fraternity brother and brother-in-law, Robert Harris who flew out of Hethel England with the 8th Air Force. I have misplaced his flight records but do know he was awarded the air medal, 4 times.

    The bombsight is a Norden bombsight. "Norden" with a "d", not a "t". "Norton" bombsight with a "t" is incorrect - it's Norden, with a "d".
Great informational videos. Keep up the good work!!

In the F model, don't forget that one, and even two in some A/C, there were .50 cal MGs installed in the forward Plexiglas nose.

You should check out the book Bombs Away: The Story of a Bomber Team, by John Steinbeck. Gives a good rundown of the training and selection of all the crew positions.

The position was actually one of the safest. Not by much, but.... And short, yes. And of course, they didn't spend the whole trip in it.
