  • Gorge Metropark, situated between the border of Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, OH, is jam-packed with awesome features, history and incredible scenery. Despite being surrounded by urban development, the Gorge can make its visitors feel as if they're miles from the city.
The park's 1.8 mile Gorge Trail takes hikers along the Cuyahoga River, to an overlook of the Gorge Dam, through two caves, beside towering ledges, and through several slot formations.
The dam, constructed in the early 1900's as a means of generating power, is slated for removal in the coming years. The removal of the dam is intended to improve the health of the Cuyahoga river. Moreover, its removal will expose the Cuyahoga Falls, which have been under water since the construction of the dam.
The Gorge is also home to Mary Campbell Cave, also known as Old Maid's Kitchen. In the mid-1700's, a young girl named Mary Campbell was captured by members of the Delaware tribe. Legend has it that she was first brought to the cave, and lived with in a Native American settlement nearby, until being released several years later, after the French and Indian War.
Several of the rock formations have dates carved into them dating back to the late 1800's, when the Gorge was a tourist destination for people all over.
The Gorge Trail hits most of the noteworthy features of the park. Do note expect an easy hike, however. With the exception of the trail leading to the boardwalk for the dam overlook, the terrain is root and rock-filled, often uneven, and has steep climbs and descents.

There's a fence now below the High Level Bridge! When I was 12 (in summer, 1963) my friend Kenny and I climbed the girders under the bridge to the highest point, and ate a sack lunch we had brought with us. . . I still shudder thinking what might might have happened 😱

Hello there I was just wondering why you climbed up the middle of the rocks to get to Mary Campbell's cave instead of taking the path? I thought that the reason that you're supposed to stay on the trails in the gorge is because going off trail causes erosion and damage to the hiking trails?

As far back as I can remember, that section of trail hasn't had any markers indicating a route that hikers must take, so people climb around on them.
A rock scramble won't cause erosion, as there's no loose sediment to erode. Additionally, the well preserved carvings in the rock by 19th & early 20th century visitors is good indication that the rock is pretty resilient.

+Josh the Travel Guy Yes, very underrated area, as it's sandwiched between two urban neighborhoods. It's got a lot to explore, and will be receiving a more love locally and nationally when they take out the dam. Tat will uncover about 150 feet of cascading falls.
