The Tradition Amongst The Village Women: The Making Of The Fijian Woven Mat🇫🇯

  • In this vlog we follow Suli with the other village women as they show us the process of making the Fijian woven mat. As a village women you have to know how to make the Fijian woven mat as it is a big part of the Fijian culture. It is used for many things such as funeral, wedding, birthdays and everyday life.
Suli shows us how it is started by removing the spikes. Another village woman shows how to fold it and make it ready for it to be cooked. Then they show how it is planted.
After you cook the leaves then you have to dry it for a few days. When it is dried then the women has to straighten the leaves and then they can use it for weaving the Fijian mat.

Oh I am so excited about this Video. Lots of work and experience definitely goes into making these wonderful and gorgeous mats. Thank you ladies for showing us how its done. If taken care of they last for many yearsI have several of the mats and just love them. Some mats are older than others and are showing their age but still love them and use them. I I had three gifted to me at Funerals and was very honoured to receive these. Friends gave me a couple with colourful wool fringed edge and I purchased some plain edged ones too. Always so much laughter in the Village it warms my heart I miss it❤️

Our forefathers have mastered life,by living in harmony with nature and understanding its equilibrium, not polluting, destroying or abusing it, taking what you need daily & not living a life of greed. If we continue to use our culture & tradition of village life & preserve it,we wont have a problem when this Western life will collapse through, inflation, viruses & wars. This lifestyle is freedom and not been a slave like me to this Western System of working 8-12hrs daily just to pay your mortgages, bills, material things & food to survive..

Your beautiful aunty is so inspiring. Her skills are very articulate. Thank you for sharing the true Fijian style of mat weaving. She teaches a lot of patience and wisdom they don't teach in school. It's wonderful to see the generations after follow and keep the same traditions of what some call art today. But before days meant crucial participation amongst the family. Weaving was made for many things and often spiritual things. Aunty is such a treasure. Much respect for the knowledge she holds, and to be able to pass it down for future generations . Thank you for sharing this amazing video. I look forward for more videos like this, honoring your elders. Thank you.
