  • 2022 #Kawasaki #z650rs #review as BikeSocial's Michael Mann saddles up in the south of France for a day in the city and mountains on the new A2-compliant 650 twin. Taking all the mechanical components of the Z650 and adding new wheels, brake discs, fuel tank, subframe and a large styling overhaul, has Kawasaki got it right in this super competitive middleweight naked class?

    This is a gorgeous bike. I am 54 and I would much ride this than either the z650 or ninja 650. It would be a great commuter and run around bike.

      Yes it does look nice 😊 much better than the z650 and ninja imho although they are nice to ride.

Honestly don't know why that style went out of fashion for adventure bikes and transformer bikes. The retro style was the style for generations; from the seventies to the mid-late 2000s. That should tell us something. That people loved their bikes. Now we have modern tech retro-bikes like this Z650RS. Kind of the icing on the cake.

    Talking about the original engine cooling fins... umm... yes, I would say that's part of the retro style and it would add a nice touch of character.
    However, I do remember the days when I would have to clean the bugs and dirt baked in between the fins. I didn't like that part.

    Another great review thank you but I have to admit to being more than a little disappointed that there was no comparison with the original Z650, especially as there was one in the video. For old duffers like me that remember the original bike and lusting after one, it would be nice to see how much things have moved on when these retro bikes come out. Another point worth making is that these categories of bikes are not just appealing to new bikers. There are a lot of us older bikers that have ridden big bikes and are now looking to down size for whatever reason.
    My only criticism of the new Z650 is that I think it really should have been a 4 cylinder. I understand that this is the way bikes are going now but to truly echo the spirit of the old bike it needs to be a 4 pot.

      I was thinking the same thing, the Kawasaki 650s seem solid, but the styling wasn’t my thing, the Z, the Ninja, and the Versys, they’re not bad, but the RS blows them away! Surprised you didn't mention the Royal Enfield 650 twins when you were discussing competitors. OK the REs are less powerful and a bit slower but they are about £1500 cheaper and much more authentically "retro". I have ridden Kawasaki 650s for about 15 years but the Z650RS isn't on on my shopping list. To me it tries to be too many different things and ends up falling between several stools. As a separate issue it's also too tall for my 29" inside leg and I absolutely refuse to pay extra for a lower seat. (Why the hell should bikers be expected to pay to make the bike fit when every car on the planet comes with an adjustable driver's seat?) When I decide to change my ER-6F the RE Interceptor will be my first choice.

    • @robbikebob
      @robbikebob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if they'd spent more money on it then it would have made the initial purchase price too expensive. I'm sure that if it's popular they will be a few aftermarket options for exhaust that will look and sound better. And that would then be down to the individual whether they want to spend money on a pipe or not. Even if kawasaki had made a decent looking exhaust, most people would still swap it for something louder anyway!

      Rob’s got a valid point about the manufacturer keeping the costs down. It’s a pretty noisy standard system already, fits with the retro-ness of the bike. Thumpy down low and growly as you head from low to mid-revs.

    • @madcockney
      @madcockney 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bennettsbikesocial Everybody says why didn't they do this or that, but people forget manufacturers have to look at what the market will bear cost wise for their target market. Their are benefits from having multi-cylinders into one exhausts from all the technical documents I have read over recent years. The restrictions put on manufacturers for Euro5 and to get type approval could also reduce sales if the cost to provide two of everything increased significantly.

      Good point. However I'm afraid the sad truth is that Kawasaki is focusing on the new generation electric engines now. To me it looks like there is no more money to actually develop the great 600 cc 4 cylinders we would have loved. So we're left with an old, dull parallel twin with a s.... noise on this absolute beauty. Combustions engines may be dead already, that's a sign!

      @@jaeger4966 I've heard a lot smarter people than myself say that electric is going to be a very slow transition. I rarely ever buy a new anymore anyway and there are thousands of used 600 super sports out there. Plus I'm really kind of interested in the triumph triple I almost pulled the trigger on one of those a while back. I see nothing wrong with the twin cylinder there's some peppy ones out there like the KTM 890 , 1290 they're all so still making quite a few inline fours in the 1000 CC class

    I do find the whole "learner friendly" or "beginner" bike labelling as rather tiresome, not everyone with years of experience what an H2 and the simplicity of the RS will attract many. For me it's just a joy to get back to analogue clocks, not because I'm a luddite, but because i find the analogue dials so much easier to use. The fact they are more expensive to include is no doubt the real reason for the current trend of solely using cheap n nasty LCD panels.
