While listening to Ustad Bismillah Khan, I sometimes hear a wedding daughter crying to her mother, a loving husband soothing his bride, a mother cooling her angry son, a poor widow making prayers for her deceased husband. A beggar in the street asking for some money or food, a village woman telling her friend how tired she is from the toll in the farms, sometimes two young girls whispering and giggling on something and what not! These are the voice of joy, anger, love, romance, hatred, pain and sufferrings. As if all the emotions are oozing out at a time. The other times, I hear a mother cow and her calf talking together, or birds on the tree-top singing for the local windows....my Gosh! Is it just me so much crazy on these tunes?

Raag yaman in particular sounds most captivating in the shehnai. It has the respite of an-evening by the plateau: It is indeed an evening raag. Nonetheless the times I listened to yaman, it has always pulled me to the first sadness of the setting sun. raag yaman is also the most basic of all Hindustani classical ragas. It is from this raag that the training of a pupil begins. For my love of the words, I almost want to write the composition of the yaman here: "I would describe yaman as a call, like a distant voice seeping through the meticulously tangled curtains of complementary tanpura. It begins with a warning as well as a eulogy, Putting everything deaf into a sleep And slowly rising in the air inviting those who have paid her attention. she starts moving her legs like a teenage girl walking in the alley. For everyone else, she seems like she is dancing to a beat, but the girl is merely passing through her ordinary route from school. Yaman has grown into a vine now, she climbs every rock, tree and spread across all dark green leaves grown in the monsoon. She is a creeper who is escaping her way out through gaps and thin areas of the jungle. She has gone far away to the last lake of the land and befriends the wicked hyacinths. then she floats on yellow-spottede shores of the horizon, blooming thousands of yellow spotted hyacinths all the way. She stops at the edge of the stream and looks back at the teenage girl she once was and imitates her earliest chimes of dawn. now, she is prepared for a free fall closing her eyes into endless hollows. These tunnels transcend into one another until she wails from this mundaneness. She begins to complain about these hollows of excitement. At this moment, She has reverberated so flamboyantly that her whining shoots into infinite tiny morsels of gratitude that shatters and settles on the cosmic circles." I would write all this and more, but in the attempt to do so I would be dishonest of all men who ever listened to yaman. Basic of all ragas, raag yaman is beautiful of all.
