They didn't only influence christian music, they influenced hearts for Jesus! They were one of the few concerts that led people in worship.

I feel that Mr. Ward is really an introvert and he’s gone through a lot over the yeqrs. He uses humor to put others at ease. A truly unique voice in a truly unique band.

I AM SAT HERE, LISTENING TO THIS GUY, TELLING HIS STORY, AND MY LIFE FROM THE EARLY 70s AND THE MUSIC OF McGUIRE, STONEHILL, LOVE SONG, AND THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE TRIO ANYONE WILL EVER HEAR. 2ND CHAPTER OF ACTS, WITH MATTHEW WARD, AND NELLIE AND ANNIE, HIS OLDER SISTERS. IT IS SO GOOD TO HEAR MATTHEW WARD TELL IT LIKE HE LIVED IT!!! THIS IS JUST SO GOOD TO KNOW THAT WHAT WE WERE FEEDING ON, IN WORSHIP, AND WALKING IN OUR FAITH, STILL SUSTAINS ME TODAY. THERES AWESOME STUFF TODAY, BUT THESE GUYS PAVED THE WAY IN THE HOLY GHOST! THANK YOU MATTHEW!

Excellent, excellent interview. I saw Barry McGuire and the 2nd Chapter of Acts in a live concert in Springfield. MO in the Fall of 1973. I was an 18 yr old college freshman. Matthew was about 15 or 16, with that amazing long hair and even more amazing voice. I got to meet them after the concert at the table in the back where they were selling their record. I will never forget seeing Annie Herring talking to a girl who was eyeing the record but unable to buy it. Annie noticed and just gave it to her as a gift That was a foretaste of the ethic Keith Green so gracefully lived by.

25:54 So true. Matthew does sing like him. ... I cannot adequately express how much the music of 2nd Chapter of Acts meant to me through my teen years. I was 12 when I became a Christian, and my childhood was a nightmare, almost every night from the age of 6 until I left home at 17. The "Night Light" song rang so true for me then. I loved to sing their music. I love to sing harmony still. I had not listened to 2nd Chapter of Acts in decades, but recently started pulling all my favorites on TH-cam into one of my playlists, so I can sing them again whenever I want. I actually met Matthew after one of their concerts in probably 1981 or 1982, and I have no idea what I said to him, or what he said back to me; I only remember his friendly punch to my shoulder, and my surprise at how forceful the punch was. (It was funny.) I fell away (okay, turned away) from the Lord over 25 years ago after watching my father suffer horribly going through treatment for brain cancer until he died from it (it was torture). I stayed angry and hurt for many years, but finally let go of it and came back to God a few years ago. I have a greatest hits cd in my car, and I have yet to get through "Night Light" without crying.

I’m so sorry for what you had to endure throughout your childhood & with your father’s cancer. I really am sorry. Some people say God basically heals when he feels like it (if it’s his predetermined will); others insist it is always God’s will to heal & if it doesn’t happen, we had unbelief somewhere. I’m in a church like that. That’s a lot of pressure! I’ve seen Christians full of faith and the Word beat incurable cancer once, twice. But some die still-full of faith- believing God will heal them. My point is we don’t know everything. God has revealed amazing things to people but we don’t know everything. He can wisely & lovingly see 10 trillion years from now and see how everything works for good to those who love him (Romans 8:28)
So we still must have faith and hope in God whether it works out our way or not. In the end, eternal health is the better than 80 perfect years of temporary health.
I hope God keeps showing you all his love & faithfulness, even when you struggle or fail him.

Matthew’s solo music came at just the right time for me in my early 20s, as a new believer and musician in the mid 80s. Not only did he have the voice of a lifetime, but the musicians he played and recorded with were phenomenal. Listening to him now takes me back to that first love experience as a new believer. Thanks for using your gift for the Giver of gifts, Matt. Thanks, Brian for doing this. Love to hear more!

Finally there’s a real brother in the Lord out there that never really liked most of what is called Christian music as well!! I thought there was something wrong with me and I’ve always felt guilty about that! But we grew up listening to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Motown, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, and the whole Laurel Canyon scene on Top 40 radio. And nothing in Christian music compared with that! I knew great music growing up so I was only attracted to great music in the Christian realm as well like Second Chapter, Phil Keaggy, and Keith Green. They were exceptionally gifted artists. So I tended to gravitate towards all the artists in Christian music who came out of secular music when they got saved like Mark Farner from Grand Funk, Dan Peek from America, Leon Patillo from Santana, Joe English from Wings, Donna Summer, etc. I’ve been mostly dissatisfied with Christian music all of my life and I thought I was weird because of that and maybe even somehow in opposition to the Holy Spirit! Thank you Matthew for coming out and being honest about that, it really helped me!

Having lived the Jesus People days there are so few of them who haven't become corrupted by political and cultural idolatry. I have such fond memories of those days when it was about Jesus and we never talked politics or culture wars. This is the first conversation I've heard from one of them in years where I actually felt lifted. I saw 2ndCOA in 1975, when they were supporting Barry McGuire. In 1977 I saw them again. I remember a bunch of us dancing with Nellie after the concert. Beautiful memories. I'm so sorry for the losses he's experienced but grateful that Jesus will wipe away every tear. Thanks for sharing this. Still have the "ToWard Eternity" album cover hanging on the wall. One of the best albums of that time.

@@holygeneration7 , just aligning myself under James J's mention of it. Things much purer in the days of Matthew Ward, Keith Green, Barry Maguire, Lamb, DeGarmo & Kay when we weren't so policey, territorial, rulesy, easily offended on behalf of others, or uptight about community guidelines. Have a nice day.

Matt, Rick Norris here, so good to see you out there! I told Steve I was sorry I missed the Biola thangy. Thought you would get a laugh out of: I once did a guest appearance on TBN (or I think it was Faithline) with the Black brother/host named Ed Smith. After the show he said: "You and Matthew Ward sound a lot alike". Then he asked me a rhetorical question to set his own answer saying: "Do you know how Matt got that voice of his?" To his surprise, I said yes I do! Incredulous, he said: what do you mean you know!?!- (me being a skinny white guy) I said he locked himself in a room with bunch of Stevie Wonder records!" Laughing in astonishment, he said: Oh my gosh!- That is exactly what Matt said when I asked him where he got his voice- how did you know?" I said: "because that is exactly what happened to me!- Somebody has to help us white folks!" He enjoyed that so much I thought he was going to fall down laughing!
Blessings and keep liftin' up our King Jesus!

I heard "Perfect Union) about 30 years ago - once on the radio here in NZ and was lifted greatly. I tried to find the artist but couldn't. Just the other day it was on the radio, they again didn't mention the artist so I wrote down some of the lyrics and did a search. And found it here. I am not an emotional guy by any stretch but I do not know why but this song tears me up and not long into it. I thought listening to it over a few days might cure me but this morning again I've welled up again. There is something deep about this song I do not understand but when I read the lyrics it is clearer. I got this interview as part of the search and what an amazing story. I am amazed at how grounded Mathew Ward is. I used to hear 2nd chapter of Acts as a young fella but didnt know the artists. This guy could have had a huge commercial career in my mind but opted to stay with christian music. He was witty and straight up - I thought he was like a combination of Richard Dreyfuss and Joe Rogan☺ - but way cooler. Thanks for a great interview.

Matthew has an anointed voice and music ministry which has caused profound healing for my clinical and pastoral clients. I highly recommend playing his music before, during, and after counseling and/or inner healing prayer ministry.

Thank you for being so completely honest and open Matthew! And thank you Brian for this wonderful interview! I love how Matthew described his friendship with Keith as "oil and water". Two wonderful and amazing Christian Brothers, who were so incredibly different in lifestyle and opinion, and yet loved their friendship and respected each others faith journey! Thank you again and praying for Gods bountiful blessings and healing over your lives.

Like so many others, the music of the 2nd Chapter of Acts has meant more to me than I could possibly convey, from the 1970's straight through till today. Mathew's voice is the closest to an angel's one could ever hope to hear. But I would also like to mention the excellent and sensitive job this interviewer did all through this conversation without a single miscue. Wonderful work, Brian Mason. Loved it!

Most powerful song memory was in Santa Rosa. Buck just got word that his mother died. They turned off the lights in the school auditorium. Then in the dark we heard Matthew sing How Great Thou Art. INTENSE!!!

The Roar of Love was a deep favorite of mine when I was a kid and somehow was part of what cemented my faith at a young age. My seven year old now makes sure we play it on the way to school every day. I can see him contemplating it. It’s really amazing how the Lord uses things more than anyone else could figure out.

I met Matthew when he sang at the church we went to in Flagstaff, AZ. We talked and I asked him if he’d thought about remastering To The Bride (on CD or whatever). Who would buy it, he asked. I said I would. To which he replied, yea, you and no one else. 😁 Great interview.

Loved the interview. Have been a 2nd Chapter of Acts groupie since I saw you all at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 1978 I think. A transformative night that changed me forever. I also lost my son in 2018 to suicide. He was twenty. We actually lost him three years prior, to Schizophrenia. A double loss. Hard as a follower of Jesus to comprehend the “why’s.” But I know where he is, and Whom he’s with!

So enjoyed this interview & "catching up" on Matthew Ward's life. I missed the Biola event & am sorry I did. Would love to see Matthew, Nellie & even Annie at 76 or so do a reunion concert. What a blessing that would be. The 'Second Chapter of Acts' had a monumental impact/influence on my life all those years ago in the 1970's & 80's. Appreciate Matthew's candid talk about depression & feel his pain regarding it's affect in his/family's life. God bless you & yours Matthew!

I used to see 2nd Chapter of Acts when I was a teenager at Resurrection City in Oakland - alternating with Bob Cull, IIRC. I had no idea until now that Matthew was my age, I thought he was an adult up there on the stage!
I was a foster kid in a home that averaged about 12 kids, we'd travel 3-4 hrs every other week from our little town to The City, culminating in the service in Oakland. Mario Murillo seems to have gone off the deep end, but the music endures and still blesses my heart.

I had the very great honor of seeing 2nd Chapter of Acts second to last concert ever at Rose Heights Church of God in Tyler, Tx. I didn't want to go, but _the girl_ wanted me to! This was also the release of Matthew's awesome, first solo album "Armed and Dangerous." Annie asked the crowd to pray for the concert before they began, to gather in small groups all over the sanctuary & pray. I was a brand-new believer & was nervous about praying out loud with my brother, sister-in-law, and girlfriend. I asked God to change my musical interest, because I was heavily into death metal and other secular music I knew was wrong. Long story short, my musical desire changed instantly after that concert & I soon discovered there was even thrash metal and punk rock made by believers to glorify God & share the gospel! It was awesome! How about a 2nd Chapter of Acts reunion? I know that gets asked a lot, but it'd be magnificent!

wow I didn't know he didn't read music...promise keepers had a serious impact in CO. I remember testimonies at church from hearts that came to the LORD thru those events. I didn't know about his dtr...WOW...I know lots that something happened- they fall away, and it is a shock to everyone when it occurs. Matthew emailed me words I never forgot, and this wasn't anything about this circumstance. He stated, this side of heaven some things can't be understood. There is doctrine OUT there amongst Christendom that trying to seek help on the difficult stuff you encounter on your journey is sin, wrong, or casts you as a failure spiritually. NADA sometimes the journey is TOUGH and the brethren need to exhort you, NOT condemn you for being human. King soopers, yikes, that was a reveal...GO Matt!!! what a lot of folks do NOT realize is CO, especially on the front range can be boom or bust and during busts, lots of folks end up doing stuff they never dreamed they would be doing.

My favorite 2nd Chapter albums are honestly the first few albums: In the Volume of the Book, With Footnotes, and maybe even…most notably Mansion Builder. I think Encores was an excellent compilation. And then, along with that, I have to say that Toward Eternity is literally one of my favorite albums ever. I think it was just such a perfectly written/produced/arranged album with such an excellent theme and it was just so cohesive. If you get Michael Omartian and Phil Keaggy, on an album, you’ve won! And I am very much with Matthew with regard to Christian music overall. For me, the stuff that was the best always had Michael Omartian involved in some way, shape, or form. Probably one of the most uniquely talented producers & musicians I’ve ever heard. Gifted beyond words. I so appreciate him.

They came to a lil fellowship run by Mario Murillo in Berkeley, CA, called Resurrection City. Barry McGuire use to frequent it, and a couple of times 2nd Chapter of Acts came with him. Then they hosted other concerts. I attended the recording or promotion for To the Bride by Barry, and they did an outdoor concert at Univ in Hayward, CA. If they were in town our youth group was there in the front row!!! I later moved to CO, and on the radio was a precious song, and I KNEW it was Matthew. Didn't really know where they had landed. I just CRIED...later I found out he was close to where I settled-who knew? Anywho I emailed him about things I was going thru, and how their music ALWAYS touched me in my spiritual journey. Super sweet dude!!!
