24 Life Changing Quotes From Epictetus

  • Epictetus was born nearly 2,000 years ago in Hierapolis (present-day Pamukkale in Turkey) as a slave in a wealthy household.
Epaphroditus, his owner, gave him the permission to pursue liberal studies and it is how Epictetus discovered philosophy through the Stoic Musonius Rufus who became his teacher and mentor. Later, Epictetus obtained his freedom shortly after emperor Nero’s death and started teaching philosophy in Rome for nearly 25 years.
Epictetus never actually wrote anything down. It is through his student Arrian that we have a written account of his lessons. And if everyone from Emperors to war heros have been grateful as they found guidance, solace and strength in Epictetus’ lessons, then there must be something for us. But only if we choose to.

In my opinion "Don't talk about your philosophy. Embody it" is one of the simplest, yet most powerful ideals that you can embrace and the one that is most lacking in the world

me too, its his experience with poverty / being a slave in his readings that gives him a different light on the dichotomy of control, all the stoics have greatly helped me in my perspectives on challenges in life but its especially Epictetus that comes into my mind during adversity to ask myself, "What is in my control here? What is the essential next step I can take?" It allows me to discard the innevitable anxiety / tragedy of life, to shift perspective to a solution oriented mindset forth focusing on what I can & can't control. To remain optimistic & positive while simutaneously not being delusional, being rational, what is the next step? For the ending we never know.. the next step we always know.

I'm trying to practice stoicism every day, although it is very difficult in the present modern day world that constantly changes.
    Like for example:
    1. your belongings burnt down with your house
    2. don't judge too quickly before you have a better view, or see the bigger picture of the story
    3. how do you master yourself enough to be subjectively free
    4. you lose your loved one to murder, how do you respond
    5. a heated situation has taken places, and you don't have the choice to 'just' walk away, or remove yourself from it... what do you do?
these examples aren't necessarily anything i've went through, but other people have or are right now
often i hear people tell me they think this way of viewing life through stoicism is unrealistic to a small or great extent
would love to hear different view points

Not that I've done it myself but if these questions or any other questions which are important to our lives, if they trouble you, the best decision which you can make is to assume that it might happen and then ask yourself what to do about it. Epictetus strikes a chord with me. My ancestry lived hard lives for me to stand on their shoulders today. He reminds me of the wise things they would have said. I don't come from a super wealthy background, more lower middle class provided by an uneducated father that spent all his days working hard. I think this is why. Epictetus understands grit and hardship.

How about this, everything will have its end, and that is why we have to live life to the fullest in the time we have (as Sonic The Hedgehog said lmao). Death isn't something to fear, proven by people like Socrates. Death is what brings value to all our actions and makes us grateful, every breath we take is us getting closer to dying, every day can be our last. If you accept death and think of everyday as your last, you'll feel much more free, and every day you wake up will feel like a blessing, making you more grateful, and it will make you get to work on things you want to do, it'll make you drop burdens like hate or fear because life is too short for all that. Besides if death didn't exist, people would be hoarding resources forever with no hope for the future generations, and in that case we'd probably be working forever until our bodies rot or something. And when you'll die, you'll probably just not exist at all after that, so you won't regret anything or feel anything, it won't be painful.

It's ok to feel sad, exhausted, angry... these feelings have something to say to you. What I humbly suggest: stick with them the necessary time, ask them what they have to tell about yourself and about the good that you want to do to the world, and avoid spending excessive time (in your own parameters) with them. Life is hard. I'm sorry for what you're going through, there really is an outside world that affects us, but we can usually choose how to deal with it. Sometimes it may seem hard to believe, but you have the power to change your situation...not that of your country, or your neighbors, but yours. Create space for the problems that seem too big for you (at least for now), so that you can choose which ones you have the power to change, and which ones you don't, and so you can make the changes that will do you good, take conscious steps towards your desires.

I love this channel and the wisdom is provides, but is anyone else annoyed at the way this guy pronounces the letter "S"? Is anyone else hearing the whistle? Is it distracting to anyone else to the point where they can't pay attention anymore?

Colossians 2:8 - Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

The utmost truth is the bible and more importantly jesus, but I think this stoic stuff is useful tool if you use it and treat it as such,it doesn't offer salvation like Jesus our lord does but it is refreshing and healthy in terms of approach in this world we live in.
