I HATE the "Why this college" essay. I mean, the colleges basically KNOW the answer, that we want to go to a great college, but they still make us write BS to somehow impress them.
I feel you. I want to go to your college because your THE ONLY in state university that offers the degree I want. If I was being honest I would say they aren’t my first choice.
I don't know if this is true tbh, colleges want to see what kind of student you'll be when you get on their campus. Mentioning specific programs can tell them a lot about that. It also has to do with demonstrated interest, pretty easy to tell when an essay is just copy-pasted with the name of the college changed. They want to see that you've actually done research and are invested in the school.
I understand where you are coming from but the colleges ask that question in order to understand your viewpoint and thinking. Frankly, everyone wants to go to a great college but those colleges can't admit everyone. So they use the Why This College essay to weed people out.
I'll play devil's advocate: The same kind of answer should reflect why you want to marry someone though. When I answered the "Why this college" essay, I had >10 reasons and none of them were about the prestige. You should think a lot about why a school is a great fit for you and have done a lot of research. If you only have 1-3 reasons and not really good ones, then I don't really think that's a great fit for you.
What I learned from applying to 27 schools (5 ivies, lots of top institutions, a few safety schools, 3 state schools) Almost all college essays are just variations of each other. In the first ten applications, you will probably get 4-5 core essays that you will use for every other school. My first application took me 3 days and gave me a ton of anxiety. My 20th application took me 15-20 minutes (2 essays) Results so far. I've heard back from 3 schools (a lot more coming in March). So far, all acceptances. Presidential scholarships for 2 of them. Coincidentally, they were some of the last schools I applied to and took me like 20 minutes each. I think that is a testament to how useful recycling essays is. The other one is a top 10 program for my major but hasn't released scholarship info yet. So, don't get discouraged. Apply to a lot of schools if that is what you want to do. You will get way better at it as you go along. By applying to a lot of schools, you are essentially just optimizing your 'algorithm' for college admission. You may be wondering, if applying to colleges gets to be so easy then why did I only apply to 5 of the ivies? I only applied to schools that I vibed with. Another tip I have is trust your gut and apply to schools you vibe with. If a school doesn't pass the vibe test, you probably don't want to spend 4 years, thousands of hours, and tens thousands of $, there. I hope this helps some juniors or future seniors.

I could totally see Supertutor tv rebranding as a comedy college channel that actually understands the mindset of the younger generation/how we see the world...she has a perfect balance between mentorship and charisma, kind of like a mix between our mom and what we are actually thinking, like our favorite teacher

It really is a strange process. It felt like our son wa asking 10 girls to prom, and had to tell each one how much he loves them more than any other, and why they're a perfect fit for each other. Even if they were very opposite each other. And it's not like he was lying. His top 3 schools on his final list were Brown, Northwestern suns Vanderbilt. Very different curriculums and very different cultures, but there were things to love about each.
Writing anything other than this, when you know this is the truth, is just lying isn't it. But you're forced to lie and try to make others believe that you're something that you're not. Fuck that.
One of my reasons for liking Harvard, Columbia, and NYU is because it snows there and is cold. Personally, I think the snow is really cool looking and I also like wearing jackets/parkas.
It would be all worth it, if every single student who are top performer, with perfect scores of SATs, research internships, saving the human race experiences were admitted to the top schools. But they are not. Many will be denied. Kids sacrifice their youth, high school years for ridiculous activities they don't even want to do only to be denied. Number 1 priority should be: debt free education, realistic expectations. No 4 year bachelor degree is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Period.
Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I had an advantage with the Common App essays cause adversity actually applied to me but I'll admit outside of Econ the no passion bit definitely applied. I'm not artistic enough to have any of those. Also, rejected from Stanford and UT Austin so far, woop! Five schools left to go, one is safety/state and I'll likely go there simply because I'm not a perfect robot and will likely be rejected from the rest of my schools, yay (also they cost a lot of money). ;w;
I could never write an essay about a roommate. It would just be a threatening note about how if they don’t leave I’ll stare daggers into the back. I can’t understand why anyone likes sharing a room.
