  • Today we are going to discuss about Febrile seizures in children which causes lot of anxiety in Parents!
Febrile seizures are seizures that occur in a very small percentage of young children between 6 months and 5 years of age when their temperature rises above 100.4 degree Fahrenheit
This can be recognised when the child suddenly becomes unresponsive, with eye balls rolling upwards and froth in the mouth. It is also accompanied by jerky movements of the upper and lower limbs!
This should not be confused with epilepsy and usually these seizures settle down by 5 minutes and child would regain his consciousness.
Usually febrile seizures don't persist after the age of 5 years.
Febrile seizures are not associated with impaired brain development or poor school performance!
    Why does it occur?
Reason is unknown in most cases!
Family history might be there in some children.
What to do when a child who had febrile seizure earlier is having fever once again?
    1. Give them paracetamol according to the weight as prescribed by the paediatrician.
    2. Clothing should be in accordance with the weather . Avoid over clothing.
    3. Consult a Paediatrician and treatment should be initiated for the fever according to the cause
    4. Doctor would have prescribed prophylactic anti seizures medication which can be given when there is fever.
    5. Record the temperature and show it your doctor so it would be easy for the doctor to diagnose the type of fever.
    6. Avoid giving over the counter antibiotics!
When there is febrile seizure at home..what can be done?
    1. Don't panic
    2. Position the child in lateral position
    3. Don't give anything by mouth including medicines as they can aspirate.
    4. Remove the obstructing cloth especially around the 🧣 neck!
    5. Some parents are instructed to give a nasal spray ( anti seizures medication) which can be given at home.
6 . Take the child to the near by hospital at the earliest.
