    I found that skating with my skis taught me the most. The longer you hold it one ski the better. It gets you comfortable with the feelings of balancing on one ski and it's the perfect segway into dolphin turns.

    Good fitting skiboots are essential. If your heels are always coming up if you lean forward you will have a bad feeling of connection and control. This leads to leaning back again. The next problem is to much stiffness from the boots. If you have a 4 buckle boot and you need to close the 3. buckle from above to strong to get a tight feeling, the inner plastic of the boot will give to much pressure to the lower shin and the boot nearly cant move forward anymore.

    • @petercreagh8797
      @petercreagh8797 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      When I was a beginner I bought the cheapest boots I could find as I did not know how good at skiing I would get but after progressing to a longer pair of skis I noticed my heel would lift and my foot would twist a little when I turn. So it was time to get new boots and I skipped the intermediate grade boots and went straight to an advanced 120 flex boot. While they cured the twisting and heel lifting problem they were very stiff so I just skied in them with the buckles loose to begin with and as I got used to them I progessivly tightened the buckles but I had a lesson with the buckles tightened and the instructor said I was not pushing my knees into the front of the boot which I could not do due to their stiffness. With these boots they had controls that I had not been told about and one was stiffness and the other canting. So I played with the stiffness control to make the boot flex and stood in my beginner boots for comparison and was able to achieve an identical flex in my new boots. The other function called canting is setting your boots so if you dont stand flat in your ski boots due to having knock or bow knees the boot can be tilted to one side to correct this. Canting would be important as without it being checked you could catch an edge.

    Hey Jens, nice video series. Appreciate them as complement to lots of practice and a few lessons at my local slope. I use these as a reminder of what to do/not do in the mornings before I start my day or midday if something doesn't feel right and I need to adjust (I'm mostly on blue square in north america). One suggestion - maybe say a quick sentence or two on why each technique is correct or incorrect or when it's desirable (or ask the guest/co-host to do so)? Sometimes the 'why' is intuitive to a casual observer (noob like me) and sometimes it's not. Thanks again.

    1) Turning the Skis too quickly
    - skis have to travel in the fall line for a moment
    - ski w a friend, follow them
    - counting in your head to time your turns to 1,2,3 turn
    3-4 seconds depending on size of a turn , then you start next turn
    1: across
    2: down
    3: across again
    C-shaped turn
    2) leaning back too much
    Absorb pressure of turn. Bend through all of joints
    NO BUM BEHIND YOU (waist still stays back.
    -bring hips forward over ski in the direction where u want to go
    3) do not lean into slope
    - stay balanced on outside ski
    - Project forwards and down the slope
    - pole plant to bring body forward into turn especially on sleep slopes
    -lift ONLY tips of ski up

  • @matthewgrainger2831

    One of my biggest issues is the uphill ski seems to move around a lot. Is this a symptom of not leaning forward enough in my skis or a boot/flex problem? I had some pretty bad fitted boots with like 60 flex from the rental shop.

  • @JanosKoranyi
    @JanosKoranyi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Ok guys, nice video, I like it.
    What about importance? What is the most important issue with parallel turns?
    If you really want to help people, you have to decide what is the most important issue to fix.
    I say, that if you steer your skies by leaning backwards you will be unable to make a parallel turn. You can not keep the skies parallel if you lean backwards during the turn. So the body projection into the fall line is necessary. This is the most important part.
    Also you forget to mansion the separation.
    The second most important thing is to keep the body weight on the outside ski by pressure control, lifting up the inside ski.
    Angulation, separation is the last thing of these 3.
    What about the too quick turn? This is not so easy to improve. Because it is a "life saving" action. When an intermediate skier feels that he looses balance he will pivot the skies before they start to turn. So counting to 3 is not very much helpful. In skidded turns you do the body projection to the fall line, then you pivot your skies a bit and then you and the skies make the rest of the turn. To make a smooth, rounded longer turn, you must be a more advanced skier, making no pivoting, or just a very little pivoting before the skies start to run into the turn.

    Isn’t forcefully or rushing a turn necessary given conditions, terrain, and other skiers? In an ideal world, I’d have powder and slopes to myself, but if it’s icy and crowded and I need to control my speed then forcing turns is needed.

    In 40 years of skiing, the best tip anyone ever gave me was to keep my hands out in front my body "like a pair of headlights" If you do that it will help keep your weight over the center of your skis.

    • @JanosKoranyi
      @JanosKoranyi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can ski perfectly without having your hands in front of your body.
      What about this tip: Do everything you can in order to keep the pressures on your boot-tongues. The boot-tongue pressures give the steering forces to your skis. As soon you lose it, you will be in trouble.

    Best tip to avoid leaning into the slope:
    Learn to skate on skis on flat sections then hold the balance on one edge for increasingly longer time periods.

    • @Hello_there_obi
      @Hello_there_obi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MegaLuckydog1 i should have added that it was for beginners haha. Its easier to learn to skate on the flat with skis before attempting stuff like this. Im doing dolphin turns now but what really helped me at the start was skating on snow and holding up my opposing ski for increasingly longer periods of time. Its a very similar principle but you don’t have to worry about the slope.

      Personally no, I havent used them. what type of skiing are you planning to do? Freestyle? Downhill? I personally use Volkls as they suit my style very well. If not, Rossignols are very good for beginners and advanced skiers as well as their boots. However I'm sure the k2 skis are good as well

      @@louiewhite5192 Problem is that I am from greece and the season is around 4-5 months so i need something to cover me on various conditions cause i have to take advantage of everything i can. I will mainly use them for downhill on frozen snow and maybe pow if I am lucky. Thanks for the answer and i will consider rossignols.

    • @louiewhite5192
      @louiewhite5192 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@StaVrosRaf The problem I think with some K2 skis is their too light and flexible and may feel flimsy. Specifically the rossignol smash 7 in my opinion would be a great begginer ski, and it's at quite a low cost for most skis in 2018, no need to thank me, just trying to help someone out, I know it can be tough to buy something. I would strongly suggest though investing in high quality boots over skis. I cant stress how important boots are. Then probably a good pair of bindings, preferably the brand, Marker. I would try rossignols though, and once you get more advanced maybe atomics.

    • @StaVrosRaf

    i am only 3 days into training, but when i turn (try to) hahah, say if i want to turn right, me left leg turns alot, but my right leg kinda stays pointing down the slope. maybe because I'm 110kilos, this require alot more effort i guess?? or maybe the ski's are too heavy or long?.. i watch these tiny tiny people go down the slope so slow, but here i am, full triangle, nearly doing the splits, and im flying down the slope over taking everyong, losing control, legs dying... the only thing that slows me down is hitting the barrier. lmfao. i must be missing something. hahah

      I have been skiing 3 times in ,and ready for a fourth..i insist on ski lessons for at least 2-3 hours for 5 days out of a week..It really help you to build confidence on different terrain and you learn so much watching other student going down a mountain..Then spend the rest of your days trying out what you've learned..Skiing isn't cheap,but it's worth a lot to learn good technique for around £150-170 for a weeks lessons..B/W
