- Hailed as the American Chekhov and short-listed for a Pulitzer Prize at the time of his death, only ten years earlier Raymond Carver had been completely down and out. In this vintage program filmed just a year after he died, Carver’s second wife, Tess Gallagher, and writers Jay McInerney and Richard Ford, his close friends, explore Carver’s artistic legacy: his stories and poems about the other side of the American Dream. In addition, excerpts from two of Carver’s most famous stories are dramatized. "No one since Steinbeck had written about these people," says McInerney, "the people whose dreams go belly-up."

“I never thought he’d amount to anything. But he did, and we’re proud of him.”
Ray was born in my hometown, and they recently painted a big mural of him. His work resonates with me a lot, and his stories feel a lot realer and closer to reality then most other authors. rest in peace king
I'm giving a presentation on one of his short stories tomorrow. great admirer of his work RIP
I went out to Clatskanie not too long ago to see that nice memorial they have for him there in Cope's Park. Tastefully done. Might go out there again this summer.
Amazing documentary indeed. I have one of his books. There is something special about it indeed
Only one?? @@Zheugma
I remember reading of his death on the front page of The Guardian.
He had a following here in Scotland and he read at the Edinburgh Book Festival with Richard Ford.
And here we are in late June 2021, still reading Ray Carver.

One of the best ever. 8/8/2022.
Carver, Bukowski, Fante - my three favourite stylists. They kept it all looking simple, and bare - but somehow more punchy and meaningful.
I like your style. Add russell banks also.
I love Raymond Carver's writing, I have a deep affection for him as well. I live in a place that couldn't be any different from the US Northwest he inhabited. I don't have any particular interest in those he writes about, I'm very familiar with Chekhov and don't feel any connection, I also don't drink or gamble, ...I just love to read his impressions in simple words of those he loved. RIP
Nice...!!
Thank you for posting this. Raymond Carver got me excited to write in college.
I love Raymond Carvers writing hes the finest writes about people I know well
This documentary made a big impact on a British audience back in 1989.
I think it went out as an Arena programme on BBC2 at the time.
Still one's favourite author of all time is a certain Raymond Carver. Picador's 'The Stories of Raymond Carver' was a legendary volume over here in England, with a magnificent line-drawing jacket cover illustration - it generated staggering reviews.
(Funny indeed always, on this very issue, to think of jazz journalist Ben Sidran's distinction between 'greatest' and 'favourite' - the concept, when it came to jazz pianists, characterized, for him, in the form of Art Tatum and Sonny Clark respectively).
The caption to the photograph of RC that accompanied Salman Rushdie's obituary in The Independent in 1989 memorably ran:
'Raymond Carver - oh lucky man'.
Wonderful mini-doc.
Recently became a fan of this cat...his stories are a hoot, just incredible. Carver, Barthelme and Salinger...masters of the short story.
#Akutagawa.
Barthelme was shite.
Este gato no necesita fans, solo lectores curiosos y personas desplazadas
This is great, because I knew very little about Carver. I didn't realize he died so young. Everything Must Go, an underrated movie starring Will Ferrell was based on his short story, "Why Don't You Dance?" There's a lot of beauty, simplicity and depth in his writing.
"We got real pissed and danced..." That's the first time I've ever heard Americans use "pissed" for "drunk." Normally that's a British or Canadian expression; in the USA, the adjective "pissed" is short for "pissed off."
Its weird. He's not a writer I'm crazy about yet i love watching docs about him -- he's a very interesting fellow.
I've read and re-read Carver for years. I think there's none better.
He was a great writer.
The man as good as writers get.
I wish there is a literary Docs on Carson Mccullers, and Patricia Highsmith.
Patricia Highsmith - now there’s a character. Just started her biography. There’s one decent documentary about Highsmith here on TH-cam- not as good as this one- but ok.
Great video, thanks!
I am one of the 125 and that makes me happy
One of the 125 ?!!!...

I'm french and i love Raymond Carver, please anybody to give me this treasure with french subtitles? My english is so poor.
what do we talk about when we talk about carver?
He can't hear you.
Great question. Thoughts?
We talk about the moldy smell of damp carpet, freshly caught fish for supper, and the sweet relief of drink.

“He got alright.”
What's the story, told near the end, about the wave, called?
Did he work as a welder before writer?
all their dreams went up in smoke like cigarettes and america
Raymond Carver, Rod Serling, countless others...I hate cigarettes.

Shiftless™ ... (R.C. my psychic bestie since fuck all 1985 or so) ...
The dramatisations of his stories are really lame
Just read the stories
Its almost insulting
But enjoyed the rest of it i didn't know anything about him although I've been reading his stuff since the 80s on the recommendation of a friend
So sad he died young 😢
Bukowski writes about these people - Factotem - and Fante
Bukowski and Ray met actually, Ray wrote a poem about it.
Bukowski wrote about himself.
Steinbeck

When you learn how Tess Gallagher ripped off his kids…
What do you mean? She took their money?! Isn't she a nice lady?!

Can you enlighten on this matter?
