I used to live just down the road from George in Cheshire in his fast cars and girls phase. What a player just magic feet. And man that pitch like so many in that era was like a ploughed field compared to now.I used be a Stretford Ender in 67-73 before football lost it soul. Happy days seeing Best Law and Charlton.
Apart from George Best's performance, this game shows Northampton Town at the end of their rise from the 4th Division (1960-61) up to the 1st Division (1965-66) and back the way down to the 4th Division (1969-70) in the space of just 10 seasons.
Shame what happened to Northampton wasn't it? 4th div to 1st div and straight back to 4th. I can't think of any other teams that have done that since. Though I could be wrong of course.
I started going to the County Ground from 1973 onwards. Apart from the odd blip here and there, they have always been pants, and probably always will be.
I was there as a 12 year old kid with my best mate Ian Johnson (wonder what happened to him)?..did'nt see too many games after that.....moved to my mothers birthplace Jersey...still follow them though......well someone has to..
If you consider the pitches they played on then, with the ball bobbling all over the place. Bestie was incredible, him and Pele have to be the best ever
@@benardboateng8291 Fair point, he does seem to get kicked more than any other player these days. But it was much worse in the 60s and 70s - he would have been booted out of the game completely then.
@@robicenco1 it doesn't mean they don't get red and yellow cards. The game is more than 7x hard right now because of the tactical improvement, determination to win and more.
I was at this game. Best had been suspended for several weeks and this was his first game back. He wasn't really match fit but nobody expected that performance. Town's goalie that day was Kim Book, brother of City's captain, Tony Book.
Best had a history of problems with referees. In 1970, he was sent off while playing for Northern Ireland against Scotland after he threw a lump of mud at the referee. If memory serves, it was during the 70-71 season that he was sent off at Stamford Bridge for calling the ref a 'fucking disgrace' during a 3-2 win for United.
Abdullah Adam it was 47 years ago. you do realise a 12 year old could have wacthed that Game and be 59 now. People don't tend to die before the age of 59 you know?
George (bursting through the door): "MA!!! You wont believe what I....." Mother: "GEORGIE!! You know better than to come in here with your muddy boots! Out!!!"
Pure class the greatest player ever in the UK scoring a record of 6 goals in one game- very very special

I was at this match as a kid...front row! I never got to see The Beatles, but at least I saw George Best!
Good night. Thank yyoou so much ffor the hiistorical match highlights. Enjoyed and liked of course. Brravo! Gratitude from country Azerbaijan❤❤❤👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
the night before the match he was drunk, what a show, and he scored 6 goals, an undisputed record ... George THE BEST

and they have never been any good since. This game finished them off

Best was simply MAGNIFIQUE.
If Best hadn't played that day Northampton would have got a replay!
Bests balance on this pitch was unbelievable. He was in the top 6 footballers of all time
If we had got the penalty I think we would have won lol

And the fact that they got virtually no protection from referees in those days.
@@robicenco1 ask eden hazard if he gets protection in 2022?

do you know why he was suspended?
Kicking the ball out of a referee's hands. Got a four-week suspension.
haha, ok thanks

yes, i remember that, he said in an interview that many of the refs were useless
I was there for the game muddy as hell but still great skills, my first of many times watching utd
Imagine George on today’s pitches, even more phenomenal!
Actually, it was a 5th round tie - the furthest the Cobblers have ever got in the FA Cup.
Kidd is underrated
If you think THAT was muddy remember Derby's Baseball Ground!
The BBG was never that bad, even before 1975. Some parts of this pitch wouldn't look out of place in a claypit.
I was there too, I wonder how todays prima donnas would perform on those type of pitches and without todays swerving balls
Not a cat in hells chance.
What a pitch that is!
Northants County Cricket Club's car park at somewhere near its best.
Best's 6th goal is the best goal I've ever seen.
What a game to watch! George Best the Best!!
Always good to see THE BEST player ever what a day out we had
this people must be dead by now

@@thebrodge3540eerie that 59 was the number used and ironic it was the number best died at
World Class, and that was in the days when defenders could just about go on the park with knives and hammers down their socks.
Brian Kidd is underrated
Amazing player and entertainer! In my top 11 upfront!
Best was better than messi

Kim Book, Tony's brother, was the unfortunate goalie that day.
George (THE) Best.
Famous goalpost pose at 9:00
ok so it's only vs a div4 side but still..
6 GOALS in an away match.
50yrs ago today..feb 7th 1970 - feb 7th 2020.
george best.
What was with the end? Why did he bolt for the rooms like that?
Needed a drink
are you sure the video is QUIET ENOUGH!???!?
They're practically playing in muck and mud :(
The n 1....six gol ....ONLY him
How were they lining up this game? Looks like a 325 or something
It used to be 2,3,5 in those days
The most amazing thing is why Paddy Crerand left Celtic to play
in this mess.
A good job KIng Denis wasn't playing that day, or it would have been double figures...
Northampton players have no mud on their shirts, they should have made more effort ??
they took massive touches back then
Look at the pitch ahaha
Jesus they were playing on a ploughed field ffs. With a heavy leather ball and heavy boots. Today’s fannies wouldn’t last five minutes.
You heard Lukaku? 😆
