    The more we sell them the more rich we make the banks, simple as...I prefer to ride what I have and do all maintenance myself like many others do. Greener is holding on to what you have imo. My car is 20 years old and my bike is 37!

    I’ve always used JIS drivers or bits and thankfully they’ve always worked to prevent mulching these delicate type of screws. They’re not always the easiest to get as they don’t come in any standard tool kits but they are available if you’re motivated to get them.

      I think regardless of whether you use those or regular PH, worn screwdrivers will always do more damage and they wear quickly, so also something to consider.

    I'm on the side of keeping older bikes nowadays. I've inherited a 1998 r1100 boxer and it's the best bike I've owned. I know her backwards and upside down and I feel connected to her more than any other bike. I've serviced her for years and even did the clutch (which is about the biggest job you can do on those old BMW's) and I'd never give her up. Still getting in excess of 40mpg with over 65000 miles and there's no sign at all of her letting up.

    Defo depends on your circumstances, but if you look after your bike and maintain it I can't see a reason to keep replacing it every 18 months or so. I have a 2007 Triumph America (Carb) so 17 years old. I have it serviced every year without fail and it is still going well. This year it started for the first time by playing up, ignition stuff, replacing Ignition coils, ICU, couple of other things some because of their age. It came to about £500 in spares and I (for the first time) got brave and did some of the work my self. It was well worth it and the expense as it is working and riding better than it has for some time. Back to enjoying it again, makes me wonder why I put it off, I thought it was time for it to go. NOT NOW! Your vids have helped me over the years, so many thanks.

    Having always had 20 year old bikes I've been happy to keep them alive. Now i have a 5 year old bike it feels brand new! But i guess it's old to some. 👍✌️❤️

      Think it certainly is to the modern generation mate, just check out the amount of 2yr old bikes in dealerships with 1,000 miles on, makes you wonder what's motivating it aye?

    I my self would like to keep older bikes in the road. Keep maintaining them during the winter months when ehynare off the road like mine. Keeps me out busy when I'm off, and it's a passion for me personally.

      Wow, thank you Herbie, that is so kind of you, but you know how it is, motorcycles are a minority on the road, I think statistically in the UK we're something like 1 bike to every 100 cars, so if it could be said that 1 sub on a bike channel is like 100 subs on a car channel, I'm happy with that... I'm sure you know yourself how rare it is to find another You Tube motorcycle creator with a big channel... we're a small happy band aye mate?

It seems as though the interest here in the states has decreased for motorcycles, not exactly sure why, but there is still plenty of them out there.     I have found that nothing is like a new bike, and if you do proper maintenance and care, that new feeling will last a very long time. Once you've had a bike for a long time it will start becoming a cool old bike,and you won't feel like parting with it.

      You touch on a great point there, aside from the green issue, or the economics of it all, but we nust never forget the sheer pride of ownership and something you feel bonded with, which is so important as you say!

    That is funny once again, Del. Because this morning, I received a return today from a buyer on eBay.
    I had sold a used XJR clutch master cylinder, and the only reason it was returned was that it needed some new internals, i.e., the service kit.
    Great timing, Del, and a great video once again!

    Everyone needs to be careful and methodical (like Del is) when messing with hydraulic fluid. I learned early on what a great paint remover it is. ☹ Greener to preserve the vintage iron I believe. You rarely hear about the environmental harm in manufacturing something "green " like electric vehicles, for example. Thanks and cheers Del and Penny. ❤👍👍

      You're darn right Rick, the carbon footprint of making an EV car is roughly the same as a diesel truck that's already 10yrs old... there's no logic to the claimed benefits, it just constantly feels like we're being sold a pack of lies, but we are common sense grown adults and as you can see from the unanimous response, we all know what's right, regardless of what the rich men say north of Richmond!     I`ve always kept my bikes for a good few years before changing. My CB1000R is now 9 years old with 33,0000 miles on the clock and still going strong. Gets smoother and nicer with age. Before the CB I had Fireblade for 14 years. Never been a chop and change biker. I`m sure I`ll be keeping my Thruxton RS for a while as well.

      Wow that's a great story and a whole heap of mileage to be proud of, makes me chuckle when dealers advertise a trade in bike with 'high mileage but in good condition' and there it is with 20k on the clock... and even more so, it pains me to see 10yr old Harleys with 2k miles on it.

    I own a ‘75; an ‘80; a ‘97 and 2 ‘08 Motorcycles.
    The ‘75 and the ‘80 are restored. I bought the ‘97 and one of the ‘08s new. And the other ‘08 with 7000klms on it.
    They ain’t going nowhere. And I can’t imagine I’ll ever be purchasing a new bike again.

    An old chap who lived up road from me. He had loads brit bikes and an NSU car. He told me 1 day after i got my first new bike. That it takes 16,000 miles to run in a vehicle .and i think he was right. Lately iv just gone over 17000 mile on my latest bike and the engine def sounds lot quieter now than when i got it as preowned bike with only 9340 miles . It was only 2.5 years old when i got it.

      You're absolutly right Gerald, i totally agree, ive always said it takes at least 10k miles to break in a bike engine and settle everything down... and when i stripped the Sportster engine for the 1200 conversion, there was still factory cross hatching inside the cylinder bores... so i'd say you're right, 16 to 20k for a full run in..

    I always do wear and tear every year or follow what service manual says it's a good reference because i was a full time rider to make sure everything on my bike is in a good conditions always when riding.

    There are some classics out there that are 30+ years old. To see them restored or just in original condition is great. Some of the modern bikes don’t have the character of the old uns.

    Hiya Penny and Del great video! I have rebuilt a slave cylinder but have yet to do a master cylinder - this will be an excellent reference. As to the question of greener... certainly newer motorcycles with fuel injections, computer management and catalytic converters are greener to operate... but then there are the considerations of the disposal of the old bike and the environmental cost of building the new one... definitely significant. As for my OWN greens, I'd much rather keep the old ones running and not have to pay the price of a new one!

      Increasingly it looks like we all agree on this, but perhaps that's because we're all of the older generation and no so willing to sign up for finance and lease deals for the latest shiney new bike?! Most of these things though, change with generations and it's clearly the younger riders what are all getting hocked up in lifetime's of debt for bikes they can't afford to buy.     You showed a good point when reworking an assembly... Always keep the old parts until the job is done... You can look right at how everything goes together, live and in person. Sometimes, instructions and diagrams can be misleading, and very rarely, simply wrong. Having the old piece there to copy is the way to go... And if the old parts are not destroyed, they may get you out of a bind, temporarily or permanently, by having a useable part in case you lose or damage one of your new pieces, or if the kit is missing a piece, or has mismatched parts. That sometimes happens with universal style, one size fits all kits.

      Too right Tommy, wise words well said on the old parts, I've often found that when you buy a kit they are cheaply made Chinese parts and not as good as the old factory originals, so actually re-using an unworn factory part is better then a cheap new part!

    Keep the old bikes going! I have a 2001 Bandit 600 that I have completely stripped and rebuilt and a 2005 Hornet 600 that gets regular attention as and when it needs it. I also have a transit custom that I’ve had since new 6 years ago and I have no intention of upgrading to the latest model just to keep up with the Jones. If you look after your vehicles they will serve you well.

    Greener for me is also keeping green in my pocket so I prefer to hold on to my bike and do my own maintenance as I have been doing for about 68,000 miles.

      Thanks mate👍, i agree, im not so sure this latest fad for buying brand new bikes every few years won't wear off once owners realise how hard it is to have any pride of ownership in a bike you hardly know....     Bikes don’t give off that many emissions anyway so riding a motorcycle is greener than driving a car but keep my motorbikes till I can’t ride them anymore unless something pops up.

    My bikes were built in 1929, 1970, and my "modern", in 1984. So it shouldn't come as any surprise that I favour the path of keeping an older bike on the road 😉

    Keeping older bikes on the road is the best way to go, much greener than getting rid of them after a short while.. my bike is 11 years old and the car is 16 years old. This mad dash to electrification of vehicles is not an ecological way to go.

      It most certainly isn't Ray, how interesting it is that they trumpet the credentials of zero emmisions but conveniently ignore the massively accelerated carbon footprint of building EV's in the first place... it's all just politics mate!

    Greener to keep an old chugger going but definitely not for the faint hearted haha, bank balance can suffer too as parts become more tricky to find. But I definitely prefer to keep my 26 year old bandit going.

    Great instructional video Del and brilliant close up camera shots Penny and in my opinion we have become to much of a throw away society every thing is discarded anything new has a limited shelf life and is not easily fixed so old is good

    It certainly greener keeping the older bikes on the road as with good regular maintenance they will run for ever. Whereas the newer ones along with other modern stuff is basically a disposible item. We've a 1994 BMW that has 90000 miles on the clock and we have just done over 2500 miles around europe two up fully loaded and it has run like a dream. Give me an old bike any day before one of these new glorified playstations on wheels

      My sentiments exactly John, keeping an old bike on the road is a joy and a pleasure in itself, they don't usually need much, unlike the computer controlled stuff, just replace the bits that wear out and keep the rust at bay!

      Only if it's broken or leaking, I believe they're available fro the main dealer, but depends on the bike and if there's any stock left!

    Well if it's got a good engine and does not burn oil or excess fuel then I would say to keep an oldie going as the parts are already made as with new models comes new parts and new production so not so green, thanks great video as always

    The last few bikes I’ve bought,I’ve kept for ages,I have a 76 kettle that I’ve had 30 years,no intention of selling it on,I had a mk2 1200 bandit that I had for 13 years,I then bought my last ever new bike,crap after sales service,& got bored with it after 18 months,bought a very clean 1200 bandit mk1 & that’s going nowhere anytime soon,much prefer working on my bikes if & when I can,I have an independent dealer at the bottom of my road if I have a problem.

    Always repair and maintain my bikes and cars as long as its economically viable, but would opt for previously enjoyed replacements rather than new.

    In my case, I doubt it. Bought XVZ1300 that was sitting in garage for 7+ years, she keeps breaking down. And it's a big lady to work on. Just doing the clutch master cylinder, because the lever just stayd in. That is how I came accross this video. If you have a lot of time and interest to invest, it is greener. Or if you have funds for mechanics.

      You make a good point well there mate.. it is a work load keeping a bike healthy on rolling, and an expence too... far easier to buy a recent or new bike and just ride.. but for me, i can't feel a pride of ownership in something that belongs to the bank...! Great bike the Royal Star, a good pedegree, distant relative to the V-Max , and certainly worth preserving.!

    looking at it from a different view. Someone has to buy new in order for those older bikes to go to beginners. Not as many are willing to shell out for a new bike when they are beginning riders. I personally don't mind shelling out for a new bike. I don't do it often. I got 36K miles out of the first, 66K miles on the second, and have over 40K miles on this one. It will most likely be my last bike. It is my primary mode of transportation to and from work, so I like having it be a reliable bike. The folks that bought mine all got a bike in good shape that will last a casual rider the rest of their life most likely if they keep it serviced up.

      That is the premium way to treat bikes, using them properly, maintaining them and passing them on in good order, it's those that are passing them on 18mths old for the next latest model that are truly wasting the best years of the bike... Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

    I like my big scoot, it gets maintained and it looks after our road trip, so maintenance is key, had mine 5 years, why sell something that's known by the rider, it's perfectly serviced by me.
    Why keep shelling out on new bikes to keep up with the Jones. Great video Sir

    It is a fact that the newer a bike or car is, and therefore the more needlessly complicated it is, the more unreliable it is. I know what I would do -and it isn't buying new bikes every 5 minutes. Happily it is also a fact that repairing and reusing older tech is more green than buying new. 👍

    Good point Del....but most low mileage bikes on the second hand market are a result of PCP deals..... it's been made so easy to own a new bike with affordable monthly payments. Not saying its the right way and I'm certainly not fooled by the whole emissions clap trap....but it's attractive to many who perhaps are not confident enough to maintain there own machines.

    My Kawasaki z1100 A1 shaft is 42 years old still going strong. No road tax or mot. It owes me nothing just good maintenance costs. Can't see the point of selling it to get a new bike. OK the performance and brakes aren't as good as new bikes but, I'm ok with that.

    According to mayor Khan, any motorcycle pre-2008 is scrap because of the emissions, I hate him because I had to get rid of a perfectly good bike, which I had just replaced all of the consumables on, now someone outside London is enjoying my ride that I lovingly restored. She was my baby😫😫😫😫😫 So sad

      What a shame, I guess if we were to consider the cost of a new bike and filter that down to the cost of running an older one by stomaching the 'fees', it would still probably work out cheaper and you'd have got to keep your lovely ol' bike.

    It’s a conundrum. The fewer new bikes that are bought and sold, the fewer used ones there’ll be and they will definitely be more expensive. It’s like having a tiger by the tail and there probably isn’t a simple answer. Personally, I like to own and maintain rather than chop and change.

      I think we agree on that Andrew, and you're dead right, that we need bikes for the second hand market, but at changing every 18mths and rental agreements meaning everyone is attracted by the shiney new ones, then it's gonna end up a little out of control with far too many bikes going second hand, not worthy of finance or warranties, so becoming pretty worthless and then the whole industry suffers, it needs careful control, just like the precious metal market, not just greedy mad dash to sell numbers... it just devalues everything.

    Interesting statement about being green trading motorcycles every 18 months why would you it’s a throwaway world we now live in I’m afraid keeping your bike long term gives the owner far more gratification than going to a dealer and swapping your barely run in bike for another 👍

    Far better to have an older bike kept in tip top condition. I`ve often had this argument over ev`s, older icev`s are for more greener for the planet than brand new ev`s will ever be. The manufacturing process of the bulk of the vehical already exists, so there`s no need for a new body shell and most mechanical components in a car, or bike. The "ungreen" aspect of motoring is buying new "complete sub assemblies" when all you really need is a new trackrod end or driveshaft gaitor etc etc. EV`s are thhe most environmentally FILTHY vehicals you could buy. My Mazda 6 is 5 years old, has less than 35,000 miles on it, and i`m 66. I won`t ever need another car in theory for the rest of my driving days. It may not be brand new, but at around 7-8,000 miles per year, and an estimated 200,000 mile lifespan of the car, i know my car is going to be more environmentally friendly than replacing it every 3 years. Bloody site cheaper too. That`s another point, by keeping older cars or bikes on the road, especially the lower milage ones, is not only more environmentally friendly for the planet(not using any more raw materials and rescources etc), it`s also a much more cost effective way of motoring, and the same goes for motorcycles too. Let`s just hope our corrupt governments will eventually see it that way, but i very much doubt it.
    A really great point made there Delboy, people only go out and buy new bikes and cars because of the snob value.

    All good, did my clutch slave and master on the blackbird. Was a faff lol. Slave was leaking. Just replaced my screws with similar Allen key fitment. With regards to green, prob 50/50. Newer bikes have more modern engines with the cats etc. But if u keep the same bike for many years, surely that has a better overall effect on the environment and (your wallet). 😂😂

      @Moonfleet41 Don't make em how they used too, that's for sure! The quality of some of these new bikes is shocking. Such poor craftsmanship, just knocking em out. And paint quality, don't get me started. Got a 23 plate MT10 and the paint marks so easily. And slightest bit of water on chain, furs up. (Cheap parts). Defo worth keeping a good older bike, won't be anymore left to enjoy soon enough. 😬
